The winner is indeed fb - too bad I don't have a prize to offer. Guess bragging rights are worth something (otherwise why would we become so obsessive about folding?).

Yes, the folding is strong in this one! You are proving most elusive :)

Given that you have been on my tail in terms of production for a while I figured it may be more fun to talk about it...

Got any new production about to come online? I'm playing with a celeron M right now seeing when I can get it a decent packet (just got memory in today to add to it... ) suspect it will only spit out one packet ever 2-3 days, but that will help. Running with less than 200mb (after video card stole it's share) made it not do so well the last couple days.

No. And I'm about to lose one of the X2's :( Might also lose the S745 :(

Even worse, my internet dropped out last night so I have a number of WUs waiting to be submitted and no crunching is being done...

I'll trouble shoot when I get home.

I've got my P4 3.2HT folding, but it hasn't gotten a QMD even though it has 1GB of memory. Running linux. This is holding me back quite a lot, as it's on 24/7. Any ideas? Seems I need to install vmware and XP on it to get QMDs :( .

It is, and has been. But no QMD.
I just put verbose logging on, waiting for it to finish a packet, then I'll se what it reports to the server about the memory (a low memory value might explain why it's not getting qmd).

Perhaps the linux clients don't run QMDs? That would be unfortunate; I was hoping to patch my client this weekend.

No Linux clients run QMD's. Even non Intel chips run QMD's under Linux but they do so without SSE2 which is not a good thing.

We are in the process of building new QMD projects. In order to do so, we need to complete our analysis of the existing QMD data -- the current QMD projects have gone quite a long time and built up a very nice data set -- so we have stopped assigning new QMD's as we analyze the existing data set. These projects have been running for almost 1 year, so we have a huge set to examine!

We expect the analysis to take at least a few weeks (and potentially longer, depending on what we find). The upshot will be that we will be moving to second stage QMD WU's, which is very exciting to us. Thanks to all who have contributed on QMD projects and we'll make an announcement on new QMD projects once we're further along.

Handruin will come back strong on me. With QMDs, I had no problem to distance him, but without, I'm helpless against his Athlon 64.

Without QMD's, Hyper-Threading turned on with dual instances of folding become the definative configuration for Intel P4's giving about a 15% productivity boost compared to a single instance. Those with dual Xeons or dual cores can do four instances without the previous RAM bandwith problems.

Hmmm. While this is unfortunate for all the Windows-on-P4 contributors out there, as a Linux-on-AMD contributor, this may result in an improvement in my systems' productivity. They won't get stuck on QMDs for which they are not allowed to use SSE2 optimizations :).

How should I have my AMD dual core box configured now?
My production has dropped significantly without QMDs and I think I'm just going to take out all the parameters for the services and see how it affects my production. I think maybe I need to configure one for big WU and the configure the other the opposite.

I've currently got two double gromacs work units each worth more than 500 points, I think 539 and 589. They seem to be taking more than a day each and were about 60% and 70% completed this morning. I'd love to get these all the time. Are they new?

I am currently getting a 413 error when attempting to send back results. As this is behind the work firewall, can I just copy the folder take it home and do a send from home—even though the machine will be different?

Ok - seems that high-value bits are available again - anyone else notice that there are some 6xx and 8xx work units being tossed out? Seems my P4 systems are getting them at least. Not sure how long they are taking to process, but seems to be similar to slightly longer than the QMD's were...

Athlon XP 1600+ is now offline.

:D
I am thinking of replacing it with an Athlon 64 3000+, though I might hold off until Socket AM2 arrives–though it is likely to be expensive at first.

Well I didn't wait. XP1600+ is no more—you were a fine friend—replaced by an Athlon 64 3200+! Should be online tonight. Venice core, how high will it go? :mrgrn:

Yeah. I'll stick with the retail jobby for now, until I can find one that is significantly better.

I've got a Zalman 7000B AlCu on my X2, and it gives better temps than the retail jobby(at least when its not clogged with dust), but when I try to overclock it to any great extent, I get EARLY_UNIT_END errors. I get maybe one a week when running stock. The memory is Kingmax PC4000 (250MHz) so I thought I had a bit of headroom there. Could be heat related. @ instances on 24/7 give temps that go from mid 40's to mid 50's Celsius over the course of a day.

Goliath online. Go ahead tac-com.

Seriously, the retail 'sinks seem to be poor quality. The finish on the base is poor. I recently bought a Spire FalconRock IV for my Socket A system, and the base on it was just as poor (pronounced ridges). I was using it to replace an Alpha PAL6035. The Spire performed worse than the Alpha, even after replacing the slow/quiet 80mm fan with a medium speed case fan. So I went an lapped the Spire (a reasonable job, not a fantastic one), replaced the Alpha and the temps were 6 degrees C cooler!

We need help, especially since some prominent folders seem to have ceased: Like CougTek, ddrueding, Santilli.

I just checked and we seem to be only folding half the workload as we were in December :(

Join, join up, fold for the greater good!

Honey: 'Greater good?' I am your wife! I'm the greatest *good* you are ever gonna get!

I did have three machines folding for a while there but I switched two of them off: the laptop because it was chewing up massive amounts of RAM and making Photoshop impractical, and the home desktop because I often leave it switched off for days at a time now, leaving only one ... or is it two? ... machines at work that run most of the time.

(Are they both folding? Must check. XP 2500 and an XP 2600. I don't see any reason they can't fold - they do practically no other work.)

My reference to Goliath a few posts up was to an Athlon 64 3200+ I've brought on-line. I named it Goliath as I was replaying Starcraft at the time. Had to be there I guess...

I also brought my P!!! back on-line as well as a K6-2/450 I found at the dump. I went there to get a case to strip the front-panel wires from, and came back with a case that contained (didn't know it at the time) MSI motherboard with SiS 5598 chipset/K6-2/450, 32MB of EDO ram, Diamond Stealth 64 VRAM PCI card, Intel ISA NIC and SoundBlaster AWE-32 ISA. Man I'm having a flashback to 1995/96.

Anyhoo, got the thing running with 128MB SDRAM (board won't cache more than that), at 6 x 83 (highest FSB the thing will support, and the SiS supports asynchronous FSB/PCI so things aren't running out of spec) on W2K SP4 and it chugs along O.K. Don't know what I'll do with it, but it should make a good Smoothwall I guess.

I keep getting the message,
"Attempting to get work packet"

It's been doing this for two days, and, I've reinstalled the entire program. Any ideas? Anyone else having the same problem? My other two machines seem to be going along fine.

Yeah, I noticed it last night. You don't need to re-install, just start and stop the service (or program if you run from the command-line). I think the problem lay on the F@H server end. I was getting 502 errors returned (which is server too busy I think).
