I'm looking for a decent FTP server to run from my workstation. The only person using it will be me when I'm out of town. I just need something lightweight, easy to configure, and relatively secure.

Thanks.

If you are talking Windows, the most popular aftermarket FTP server, which has SSL encrypted log-in capability -- or the old school clear text login, is:

http://www.wftpd.com/

If you are interested in using SSL encrypted login capability, your best choice for an FTP client is WS FTP Pro.

Oops! Forgot to mention that the encrypted login capability only exists in the "Pro" product.

  • WFTPD Pro Server - single license US$130
  • WFTPD Server - single license US$35

In either case, they are definitely better than having to deal with the semi-lousy FTP server that is built into IIS.

You must be speaking from an alternative universe today. :)

I'm surprised no-one's mentioned Serv-U, AFAIK the most common Windows FTP server software around. The basic version is free (all that David needs), and the secure version is only $80. It's so easy, George W. Bush could set it up. Well, in principle, anyway.

Handy, Filezilla looks like a useful link to bear in mind.

At one time or another Serv-U has been -- it's been a neck-to-neck race between Serv-U and WFTPd.

I thought about mentioning Serv-U earlier, so I guess I will now. I immediately quit using Serv-U several years ago when they decided to semi-secretly add a "phone home" capability in (then) newly released version so they could verify licensing each time Serv-U starts. I had already started using the Pro version of WFTPd and decided that it was time to dump Serv-U due to the potential security problem of these unregulated chit-chat sessions. I also saw a potential reliability problem in their scheme. What if the Serv-U (CatSoft) server did not respond in a proper manner to enable Serv-U to execute due to a communications link problem, or the possibility of a misconfiguration of my licensing information, or loss of CatSoft license verification server?

By the way, there Ipswitch also makes a good FTP server, called WS FTP Server. Unfortunately, it's not as cost effective as WFTPd Pro which has comparable capabilities.

I've heard more references over the years about wsftp than any other ftp server.

For the unix side, I've read good things about vsftpd (and I use it at work) .

I'm giving Serv-U a shot. Sure enough, right after configuration it phoned home...whatever. It was easy to config, only takes 2MB of RAM when idle, and is free. Works for me, thanks guys.

Do you still use it? Under which operating system? I know someone who needs an FTP server for a medium-size company and this is the one that seems to be the best solution from what I read.

Yup, I still use it, but I haven't upgraded in a long time. It's running on a redhat AS server used to host a website. It gets used every day to transport files. The linux host has been up for 83 days with no problems so far (including the FTP server).

The one exception is that my FTP server isn't used by many people, mainly just one automated script. I cannot claim to have experience with numerous users, but if you look at those who do use it (from their website), it seems to be very solid and secure.
