You can buy these at Fry's (and other places) for US$29.99.

The really *great* thing about this SATA drive bay is that when you purchase one, you don't need to buy any carriers for any hard drives -- EVER. This drive bay only handles bare drives without carriers.

You simply push the bare SATA hard drive into the drive bay channel and the front inserts the hard drive into the SATA data and power connectors. When you remove the hard drive, the front cover pulls a metal linkage connected to a rod-pin that partially pushes the hard drive out of the drive bay for removal by hand. They work great for plug'n'play applications.

I've seen these before, and I got to wondering where I'm supposed to keep my drives when they're not mounted. I mean, we all know how delicate hard drives are. Unmounted, bare hard drives are at high risk for damage by mechanical shock and because of their exposed electronics. I wouldn't want to keep them in a drawer or on my desktop, and it seems too much trouble to slip them back into their static bags. Maybe one of those foam hard drive shipping box inserts would do the trick.

I don't have a problem with drives sitting on my desk, or in a drawer. Don't drop them, don't touch them without grounding yourself first, and don't heat them. They aren't magical, common sense is all that is required.

And, put a label on them. It could be quite exciting when you fire up your porn collection instead of vacation pictures for your in-laws. :-D
Then again, maybe your vacation pictures are porn ;-)

My worst was putting my laptop in hibernate one night while playing a, erm, video. The next day, hooked it up to the projector at a clients for a presentation...and got a talking to from HR.

About as bad as the time I sent a less than tastefull attachemnt in an email to a workmate, and he then accidently forwarded it onto the entire company... (and of course my details were still in there as the original originator)
