Right you are... I made the foolish assumption that the vendor who linked me to the HIS site had linked to the product they were actually selling, and apart from the connector it does in fact look identical...

At any rate the one I'd buy would be the AGP version... Same thing but with no crossfire obviously...

The X1600 pretty much sucks. For a bit more, if you are gaming, the X850XT
will thrash it, and, in the games I play, by up to 100%, with eye candy turned on.
XL 800 just went south, ati, with passive cooler. I don't think passive is a good idea on that hot a chip.

Sincerely

Greg

I already have a couple of systems for playing games, with an X800Pro and a 9700Pro respectively. The x1300 would be hooked up to my TV and would be purely for watching tv shows and movies. The system it's intended for is currently running Kubuntu dapper drake, and I'm happy enough to keep it that way if I can get the performance increase I'd like by installing an x1300.

As it is it plays videos just fine anyway but I suspect that it won't be able to handle hi-def content and I'm not entirely sure that AGP video cards will be arround for long enough for me to wait until I actually have some hi-def content to watch before I upgrade...

I am omnipresent
I can put some h.264 720p porn up on my web site for you to try. :D

Anyway, an x1600 is a step down from a 9700 or 9800, but folks I've sold them to have been more than happy enough with their performance in WoW.
An x1600 is a $100 card, Greg. An X850 is a $250 card. It'd BETTER thrash that x1600!

Mercutio,
that's what's weird. The X1600 HIS card is 150 bucks at new egg, and, I think that was open box. The X850XT from HIS is 180, full retail package with lots of goodies, from Newegg. WEIRD. I'd ordered the X1600, thinking it was close to the 1900, due to the numbering scheme. Then I looked for some reviews, and, at 1024 with eye candy, the X850XT will SERIOUSLY SPANK the X1600 by as much as 100%, in Quake 4. The X850XT and the X1900 are often REAL close in the tests I've looked at, except in price, where the X1900 goes, I can't, right now, or, really won't.
The X850XT is the ONLY 16 pipe video card I know of, for under 200 dollars, and, IIRC, it will do crossfire.
Have to open the box, and see if it's setup for such a beast, as far as venting the second card outside of the box.

If anything, you've now learned not to go simply by the numbering schemes. ;) I've had several conversations in the past explaining that an ATI 9600 pro or even the XT wasn't as fast as an ATI 9500 Pro. The 9600 XT is close, but it's not as fast. Just as you found out, you can't go by the model numbers.

The passive cooler will work as long as you don't push the card hard and have well-engineered internal air flow around the hot spots so that one component does not dump a lot of heat onto another component. Otherwise, for most people, passive cooling of such video cards is simply not worth it.

The HIS X800GTO (has the IceQ II coler) can be bought for less than NewEgg prices at this place:
