Not sure if this is more a Home NAS or Selfhosting Fun type comment, but HexOS is a derivative of TrueNAS with a simplified UI that would be incredibly appropriate for someone like Lunar. It launched as a commercial product over this weekend and seems to want to exist as an alternative to something like a Synology/QNAP that runs on basically anything x86, with prepackaged VMs for extra functionality.

I don't personally think TrueNAS is that big of a deal to get running, but one click installs to get services like Plex set up is a pretty good idea, and $100 for a software license might make sense for someone who doesn't want to mess with setting up VMs or containers by hand.

One of the tech YouTubers I follow from time to time just did a bit of an overview of HexOS. Seems like it's still pretty much in beta and a bit rough around the edges but I can see the use case for it.

This guy's opinion matches yours a bit with it being an easier adoption compared to truenas for those who don't want to get into the weeds with configuration and tweaking.

Yup, I think it would be a good fit for me as well. TrueNAS is open enough that I'm not worried about my data being trapped, and I don't need any complex configuration. Just the easiest default settings would be great.

I hear just enough sobbing from people who have Synology devices that it's too complicated to do X on one of those that I think there could be a real market for somebody willing to put together a turnkey package with something like HexOS at its core and maybe a JonsBro NAS chassis as a do-everything home server.
