It's helpful if you're looking to scale out a workload that can benefit from a large elastic resource using someone else's hardware that you pay for by the amount you use. In your case this may not be directly helpful to the work you do.
This website is running on a smaller competitor's service that does similar things. This resource is technically paid for by the hour just as an example.
Microsoft has mad money to throw at ridiculous custom hardware. Do Amazon or Google or Oracle do the same thing? If they don't, why don't they need to?
