You're right, installing it isn't hard as long as you know about yum or package management including the correct package name to install.

OK, I installed it. But really, why should that be necessary just to test the internet speed?

Most or all internet speed tests require some type of binary executable to run. There are several ways you can run these in a browser: Flash, Java Applet, Silverlight, ActiveX, or JavaFX. Flash and Java are the most ubiquitous plugins that people have installed, so that is why you need to install it.

Does the newer Windows or latest Mac OS X have that pre-installed?

No. Windows has not come with a Java Virtual Machine since 2001. See Sun Vs. Microsoft for more information.

I don't believe that OS X comes with a JVM either, but I could be wrong.
