So what happens if one has 2 or more really big dicks in an array? I'm thinking that several of the 1.5TB drives could free up some space, but is it possible to exceed 2TB on the old OS such as XP? Is a special controller or filesystem needed?

The OS is the limiting factor. You cannot have an NTFS partiton greater than 2TB in XP. Server 2003 and Vista both support GPT disks, which can get much larger (my main array is ~10TB now, with a single drive letter).

Freudian slip, or you could have an orgy :D

Grrr! I hate computers. :(

Me too, but they do provide some utility...unlike some can't be fired, overpaid, to be annoying, nasty, indifferent, 'really big dicks' DMV managers, lol.

ah crap, Merc beat me to the punch line...Maybe Palin might be interested.

I'd say you're in for a great career in Japanese fetish porn.

:cyclopsani:

I am so afraid to ask how you know that.

So I will need to upgrade the OS by ~2010 when hard drives exceed 2TB in capacity? That is really a bummer. :(

Going to Server 2003 is really painless. You'll want 64-bit anyway to support more memory, and Server 2003 x64 is basically XP with support for larger dicks and more RAM ;)

Even if the OS were free I'm certain such a change would be quite painful for other reasons.

Does XP x64 not support GPT? It's exactly like Server 2k3, only it's actually XP.

I'm sitting here looking at 12 1TB hard disk drives and wondering if it's worth buggering around with all of them just to make a screen shot of one big array, before I set them up properly.

And the answer to the question "is it worth buggering with?" is No, simply because I can't get a Promise RAID card to work in a system with a 3ware RAID card and therefore don't have enough SATA ports to do anything all that impressive.
