Comcast with no caps for me: $42.95 US for 1.5Mb/128Kb + $3 for cable modem rental = $45.95 expense report each month. My boss just started letting me expense my home access.

Wow, that's a lot of broadband, Coug. What are you going to do with no monthly limits and so much bandwidth? Serve a porn site from home? :mrgrn:

i saw that maybe a month ago road runner moved from 2MBit to 3Mbit.. seems to be the standard cable speed in the US now. Everest cable has offered 3Mbit cable for the past several years here in the shawnee mission area.

Fushigi, I think Comcast has largely moved or is moving to a 3Mbps downstream service.
I've not seen any increase in performance so far (still getting about 250ishKB/s max sustained), but I'll unplug my cable modem as SteveC's article suggests.

I know that when I used to live in Windsor, ON, I was paying $45 CDN / month. 3 Mbps down, 450 kbps up, no limit. :eek:D

*Thread resurrection*

Well today we put in a bid on a house, they have till tomorrow night to accept or decline. Cross your fingers lads. Older house, immaculate condition and an attic that's larger than either of the main floors. It has two enclosed porches and I'm thinking in the winter I can put the cpu boxes out there and have them OC'd in natures chill :) Oh and two car garage so no need to brush the car off in the winter.

Been there, done that. One of my previous employers, who I had worked 5 years at and sweated blood for, decided to move to cut costs (sold their own building and moved to rented space). In between, there was a change of leadership. Promptly after we settled into the new place, the new leadership laid off several key people, including your sincerely, with little or no severance pay.

Such is the honesty and morality of many business leaders. BTW, neither was the company American, nor was its leadership.

Good luck with it Pradeep! I just went through the same thing and I just finished my move this Sunday. U-haul screwed me by not getting the 17' truck I needed. I had to make two trips with 14' truck, and the second trip wasn't even 1/4 full...what a waist of my time. I'm now moved into my house and awaiting phone/cable/internet. Moving a 55 gallon fish tank wasn't fun, but the fish survived. Laura and I had been looking for a house since this past feb/march. We went through many listings and finally found one we both love.

Congrats, Handruin! It's a great feeling to be living in your own place. It'll keep you busy, puttering about here and there!

Well we got the house! Now it's just a matter of getting all the closing costs paid for. We hope to be in within a month or so. In NY you have to pay first year taxes plus homeowners insurance up front, so it's not an inconsiderable sum. Plus the lawyers suck you dry. But the thought of broadband makes it worth it :)

Congrats Doug.

Congrats, both of you. Broadband will definitely be available in the new house, Pradeep?

Yup, cable is already there. My house is in the village, so I guess the density is enough for them to run the cable. And I'll be going for the HD receiver. Apparently TW have ones with DVI out now.

Woo Hoo, I'm back on the net. I've essentially quadrupled my download speed (and then some). I went from 90 KB/s DL to 500 KB/s DL... I'm trying to grow my lawn right now...just put in a mail box, so much to do, be back later.

If I can ever get a lawn to grow I'll worry about the professionals later. :)

Lawn growing up north is a frustrating business, seeing it's mostly covered by snow for 6 months per year. I'm a little upset that our new place doesn't need a ride-on mower due to the size, however I'm considering justifying one because I'll need a snow-blower for the winter. I'd much rather use a ride-on blower, those walk-behinds are bloody useless if the snow gets too high or there is a slope.

On the other hand, Decorative Rock is a very acceptable lawn substitute, even for us northerners.

Or you could just pave it all. Since I'm allergic to grass pollen, I'm good with that option, too.

My grass started popping out of the ground yesterday, it's like my own little chia pet. I tried paving more of the front yard, but it costs too much.

Well we had the home inspected yesterday. Roof needs replacing but we knew that already. He also found two reverse polarity sockets in the garage and about 15 sockets with open ground in the house. Looks like some backyard electrical work went on. It's the sellers cost to fix tho. Apart from that she's hunky-dory.

Moving is a pain. But worse yet, is when you move into a new house and some serious defect is found. Although not as serious as plumbing or electrical, my air conditioner has gone out. Come to find out that the lines running from the condenser outside the house to the coil inside the house are leaking Freon. The problem is where! Today the AC guy is going to try to find the leak, this may involve opening up two exterior walls (one on the first floor, the other on the second floor) from the inside. He just arrived and is charging the system so that he can whip out his Freon-sniffing wand and begin his search – joy.

The house I moved into last year - a now-three year old property, was found to have grossly inadequate electrical wiring (in a "I'm surprised you haven't burned the place down, this would've been out of code 30 years ago" sort of way) and an insufficiently deep foundation.

How'd I find this out: A guy with a background in construction moved in down the street and started to put up an enclosed porch, in the process making these discoveries about the last five houses on the edge of my subdivision.
I've known about it for months but I haven't wanted to deal with it.

Theoretically a building inspector should've known that stuff during construction, but apparently there's a substantial amount of misbehavior among the developer, builders and city fathers.

My mortgage included an arbitration clause, so I've passed the buck on to my insurance company.

Ouch! Hope he finds it before he has to start ripping into the walls.

Perhaps a quiet drink to dull the horror?

I'd love to, but I have to stay sober so that I can move to Ballarat and work at the Redhill slave camp. :D

Mercutio, I don't know which is worse, a fire hazard or a shifting house. Like I said earlier, my problem is nowhere near as serious as something like electrical issues. I just want what I paid for to work properly.

Well, like I said, I'm passing it off to my insurance compay. They're taking the mortgage and the right to legal action.

Sure enough, the builders punctured one of the lines for the air conditioner with a nail. Optimistically (which I normally am not), they won't need to tear apart the Master Bath shower enclosure. The leak is right where the roof meets the ceiling. The guy they sent out was to big to reach that area(although I would argue that he is not a big guy), but we could see and hear the leak. Either they'll have to send out a smaller guy to crawl around in the attic or open up the ceiling from the inside. We'll wait for another phone call to find out.

(Back to my usual pessimistic self.)

This couldn’t have happened at a worse time. Well maybe it could, but not weather-wise. It’s been near 100! I’ve become real cranky in this heat now that I’ve stopped drinking in line with my up and coming job down under.

On the flip side for me, I've noticed that the oil line running from my oil tank to the burner is leaking in the garrage. They're coming to fix it tomorrow. The burner still works fine, it's just a small drip running down the hose.

The mail man delivered mail for the first time yesterday, and now I have more mail today. I have a sad little mail box that leans...I did a piss poor job of installing it, but I'm proud. :mrgrn:

I've been outside since 6:15 (now 8:00) watering my lawn. I have a sprinkler for the back and I water the front with my hand sprayer. I also met my neighbors, they are nice so far.

You do know that one of the new anti-terror laws in Aus requires a B.A.C. of over 0.2 before they will let you in the country right?
