Western Digital "My Book " Pro Edition II

Features:

  • 1 TB storage capacity via RAID-0 (500 GB x 2)

  • 3 interfaces: Firewire 800, Firewire 400, and USB2

Personally, I think this box should have an eSATA interface instead of a Firewire 400 interface.

RAID 0 in an external drive sounds like a dumb idea to me.

Yes, but Dubya Dee aren't the only ones foisting these marginally dangerous implementations of "mass" storage upon the unsuspecting market. LaCie was selling "600 GB" then "800 GB" external hard drives -- back in the era of 300 GB then 400 GB hard drives -- to the unwitting neophyte Mac crowd.

Joe SixPack: "Wow! This thing is a RAID array! That means it's safe!"

Well, hopefully, there's a jumper switch on these WD units that will allow users to change the configuration to RAID-1 (mirrored) or independent / JBOD.

Merc was saying comcast was down in his apartment complex.
Maybe they haven't fixed it yet.
Or this could be too easy of a target for him, so he let it speak for itself.
Or he's just getting tired of bashing WD.

WD has a single drive eSATA drive.

Yes, this My Book version has RAID-1 capability. I'll wait until they have this product in production for a while so they can work the bugs out.

I am omnipresent
I am not tired of curing any ignorance of how awful WD is.
However, lately, you guys have been doing it for me.

Chances are quite high the bridge circuitry and RAID controller are all off-the-shelf parts that many vendors use. So, it's pretty much ready to go.

Unfortunately, the little round socket in the photo below shows that an external power supply (a.k.a. -- "power brick") is being used. Argh.

It's fancy how they call two interfaces three...

All WD needed to do with this unit was to supply a 6-pin-to-9-pin Firewire cable for people with 400 Mb/s (IEEE-1394A) Firewire interfaces. The Firewire 800 Mb/s (IEEE-1394B) should be "bilingual."

From the back panel image, WD product design engineers went as far as providing the back panel layout for an internal 120/220 VAC power supply. Instead, you get a P.I.T.A. "power brick."

Someone did the right job here -- same three interfaces as the WD "My Book" Pro II, but an internal power supply.
