I'm going from a Nforce2 MB (Asus A7n8x-x) to a Via MB (Asus A7v880), CPU not changed (Barton 3000+, 400FSB). What's the recommended procedure for the swap when one doesn't want to install WinXP again? Add/remove programs and remove the Nforce drivers, then shutdown and swap mobo?
Using PATA HD.

Thanks.

So long as they're both PATA drives I don't forsee any massive issues. IIRC there's a switch that removes all devices and re-installs them on reboot. You'll probably want to to this right before the swap.

You might also need to delete certain items from Device Manager related to the chipset. I've never moved from nVidia to VIA, but I've gone the other way round. Without taking the necessary steps I've encountered plenty of blue screens -- back up your data first!

You mean a procedure that actually works every time?

Start an upgrade install of Windows XP. After the first reboot, shut the machine down and swap the motherboard. The mini-setup routine will properly re-select the proper kernel and allow the correct drivers to load.

I've done what Buck describes and found that it's WAY too much work.

Thanks everyone!
I'll try the Upgrade install.

I'll get the new MB on monday, but I'll probably don't have time to install it then, as I'm leaving for the vacation then. But I'll let you know how it goes when I'll get back!

Over the weekend, I went from nForce (1) to Via and found I didn't need to do anything at all. Given that the other way around results in an inability to boot even in safe mode, I suspect the problem is with the Via rather than the nVidia drivers. And unlike the nForce drivers, they're not easy to uninstall. :(
