I had to vote for Flagreen's record on the IQ Test. Note that although he scored 147 on the Super IQ test I don't think this is remotely the same as the usual IQ test on which he scored 131. Nevertheless, I was still a bit shocked by it even though we all know Bill's no dummy.

The most obvious choice was excluded because I hadn't heard of this - Merc getting broadband. I had to pick my second choice Tea disapearing.

Tea & Merc were my finalists. But Merc getting broadband was really just an eventuality that finally occurred. Shocking that it did, but it had to happen sooner or later. Tea's disappearance is already changing the atmosphere here.

JoJo getting married seems to be the most newsworthy event to me. By the way, when I read newsworthy, I mean not the most shocking or horrible event, but the event that deserves the most news coverage. :D

Sorry JoJo, but Tea's absence is major news for me. I was expecting her return, so that the pub would be fully staffed again. Without her, the demands of a pub leave the brewing of beer to chance. I guess I'll have to put a Help Wanted sign to cover for her until she shows up. Sad day in my annals - the day that our Pub lost Tea.

No problem Bartender. I'm deeply shocked about Tea also. I can't believe she abandoned out platonic, distant relationship, that she might not have known about.

Wow, you were in all of those places 3 months ago? I'd say that's spreading yourself thin. I would've rather used three months of time to visit all of those places - if I knew where they were.

I think that the 147 is an anomoly. I'd say the 131 on the standard test is closer to the truth. I did take more time on the "super" test as there was no time limit IIRC. But still it defies credibility. I don't have anywhere near the education you fellows have and though it's not entirely dependent on education it is still a big factor I think.

How did Pradeep's defection to the west not make the poll? That is the big story of the year!

I think he's in America since last year, so that would be a story for the previous year, not this one. His wedding though, could have made it to the list.

Devil's Marbles? I love it.

I also love the name of a now-forgotten northern California mining town: Dunmovin

People around here getting married may or may not be a newsworthy event depending upon the person. JoJo's marriage didn't surprise me, although I'm still curious as to why he chose Thailand to get married. Pradeep's was a little more shocking in that he never mentioned a girlfriend.

For events that would be real shockers, I think myself, Tannin, CougTek, or Mercutio getting married would be major world news. :mrgrn: Tannin has been adament that he's not the marrying type even though I think he's seeing someone (Belinda IIFC). As far as I know, Cougtek and Mercutio aren't seeing anyone, and neither am I. I just don't seem to meet people who are girlfriend material in the course of my life, and I never really got over my first love anyway.

True, some people may not have an interest in someone else getting married. Although newsworthy events do not need to necessarily shock, surprise, or horrify anyone, they can be pleasant and delightful too. Which is what I thought of when looking through the poll.

And the caretaker (who can be seen in the first picture also - on top of the boulder at centre. This is a Nankeen Kestrel - and he is very, very scary if you are a grasshopper or a mouse.

Dunmovin is cool. :)

I'm sure they would, Buck. Mostly, they hunt by hovering over grasslands and open country (one of only two Australian raptors to hover as a matter of habit), watching out for mice and other creatures. Any cricket unwise enough to emerge in daylight would be at high risk.

Just a curiosity Tannin, what was the insect and rodent population like in that area? Did it seem unusually low, or has the balance between predator and prey equal itself out?

Nah, he's got a super duper 'scope. Where were you guys? :)

Tony, those pics are wonderful. Can't wait for your full pictorial of Australia. You could sell that thing on the Internet for good money if these pics are representative of the rest of your collection.
