A few years back, I recall seeing either a Swedish (not Husqvarna) or Danish electric powered reel mower at some local yuppie haven. It was impressive in capability and price -- maybe US$399, with bag.

Was it a Brill (German)?

I use one of these for the fiddly areas, 4 stroke so it's easy to fill.

I looked at the link you supplied, and that might be it, but the colours have surely changed if that is it. The one I recall was essentially all green. I don't believe it was German made, but Swedish or Danish.

By the way, I saw it about 11 or 12 years ago at a place called Berringer's Hardware, which is a local yuppie "The Sharper Image" sort of place that I believe actually preceded The Sharper Image by several years.

4-stroke? Yoikes. A 2-stroke would weigh much less for a given amount of power, unless it's made of titanium, or even better yet, nonobtainium.

This takes me back to the old Yamaha-versus-Honda days when I raced the ring-a-ding-dingees around and around a dirt course.

Wow! Why make it so complicated? Just buy a goat. You'll get a well trimmed lawn and later you can make yourself a nice Goat Masala. :D

Better yet, get a small horse. Ride the horse to work and it'll keep the lawn trimmed down there as well.

Plus, it will spread fertiliser everywhere in between, enriching the environment!

Well, I looked in the telephone book and I noticed that I screwed up yesterday. The place is not Beringer's but Bering's.

Whatever. The place does not appear to sell anything for lawns, unless they don't want to "online." Nonetheless, I might just stop by this weekend to see what they have -- which mean I probably need to get the tuxedo out (gulp) just to gain entrance.

Are those thermaltake fans really quiet?

From the specs they're really quiet, but they still are spec'd to move a lot of air. I was curious if they really performed or if it was all BS.

They are quieter than my Sunon fans, but with no surprise the Sunon fans moved a twice the RPMs. I'm not crazy about the thermaltake fans just yet, and that's because they produce a different (and slightly more annoying) frequency during operation due to their lower RPMs.

I'm still playing with these fans to obtain a quieter system. The amount of air they move is enough to cool my system adequately. I've found that some of the noise I'm hearing from the Tt fan's is being produced from the built-in grills within my case. I think they are restricting the exhaust of the air and in return causing more noise.

Since the fans weren't that expensive, I gave them a chance. I'll likely be replacing the 90mm Tt with a 120mm panaflo to reduce the noise even more (i'll use a 90 to 120 converter for the heatsink). The 80 mm Tt's fans aren't as loud as the 90, but with two of them, it's a bit much. I've removed one of the two 80mm Tt's to reduce the noise even more.

I hadn't realized that the 120mm Panaflos were quiet. If you cut the voltage by half, maybe ...

In any case, I don't think you'll be happy with a 120mm fan and converter combo. :( It may be worth trying a different 90mm fan, but it sounds like you need to try a different CPU cooler altogether.

They make the Panaflo 120mm/12volts fans in four different airflows. The lowest ones are fairly quiet.

I agree wholeheartedly. Fan adapters stink. Additionally they've been proven in tests to not allow good airflow through them. (I can't remember where I read that online test at...sorry)

Is that your NF7-S setup, Doug? What heatsink is on there?

I can't seem to find the info on silent pc regarding the panaflo's being a decent choice. I'll post it when I find it, but that's why I was considering one of them. I'm also considering a unit to reduce the seed of the fan to quiet it down. They also suggested a 120mm fan from nexus, but again I'll have to find the link.

Groltz, I'm using the Thermaltake CL-P0006 on my NF7-S. The temperature is more than adequate with the 90mm, so even if I lost some air movement with the 120mm, I'm primarily looking for less noise, even if it means a slower fan. If the adapters are that bad, I guess I'll try reducing the speed of my current fan to see if that helps.

What I'd recommend is a more efficient heatsink in terms of heat transfer, then. Using a better heatsink means not needing as much air blowing through it to maintain a target temperature.

What about mounting a Thermalright SP-97 or SI-97 and a quieter 92mm fan?

I'd settle for just the quieter fan. Like I mentioned, the temperature is more than adequately controlled with my current heatsink and Tt 90mm fan (2500 RPM). It's already 10 degrees cooler (Celcius) at full load compared to the spire that I was originally using. So even if it increased a few degrees with a quieter fan, I'd be fine with that.

The fan didn't cost much, so I'll have no problem swaping it for another. I just bought the Thermaltake HS, so I don't want to swap it for a SP-97 or SI-97 just yet. That costs a bit more than a fan. :)

A link to what? From Googles?

There are eight new members in five days (I don't count).

I meant, did someone from SF, post a link on another tech site, back to SF. We rarely see a new member in a month, never mind 4 new members in a day...some of which actually participate. :)

@Buck:

We've been watching a B-17g do touch-and-goes at KBFI for the last 2 days.

Here's a picture of it airborne in Santa Barbara, CA. The green bands are unmistakable, it's definitely the same one visiting our airport.

I always enjoy the sound of four big radial engines.

Re: quiet computing.

The best quiet HSF combo is a Scythe NCU-2005 with a Nexus 120mm controlled by either a Zalman Fanmate2 (cheap and manual) or a nCubed T-balancer (expensive and automatic).

This has been the configuration of my last 3 systems, all of which are "silent" at 1m distance.

Cool! Thanks for the info Steve. Any particular reason why the B-17g is visiting KBFI?

Yes, I've fairly regularly seen for many years now -- like once or maybe twice a month it seems -- a few different B-17 aircraft (some solid green, others some variation of that), Japanese Zeros (sometimes more that one at a time!), and P-51 Mustangs.

Less often, I've seen by chance the occasional B-24 and the unmistakably large (and loud) B-29 flying by.

I haven't heard anything about it...I had a chance to grill a guy visiting from Galvins Flying Services today but it didn't occur to me to ask.

My best guess is: Read the Remark below this picture.

I dunno. I much prefer the 4-stroke for easy starting, lower emissions and noise, and better fuel consumption. That said, Honda USA doesn't sell a 4 stroke hedge-trimmer or blower for some reason (they do in Europe/Aus), so I had to go with 2 stroke Stihls for that. My newest addition to the lawn care family:

Er... are you talking about the one that came out in 1980? 'Cause I've seen that one about 20 times and I can't think of anything close to that.

Honda mowers...surprised they didn't offer you a mortgage application. Speaking of power appliances, I need to find me a snow blower. I'm sure it'll be snowing in new england in a couple weeks.

Highly recommended. Nice cut, and the bag/mulch control is handy. I take back telling Tony he was nuts for spending AUS$1400 for his - he got a commercial version tho. [/img]

So tired. Just wrapped up the first 24 hours of our Battlefield 2 Tournament. Now I can sleep for a few before going back to finish it off.

Yup. This thing was officially sponsored by EA, as a "Battlefield 2 Premire Event". They provided gaming mice, games, and T-Shirts as prizes.

It's now 1:30AM on Sunday, and I've had 2 hours of sleep since 6AM on Friday. Every hour in between has been me yelling my head off, organising and scoring match after match. Rotating teams and maintaining ladders. My head hurts so much.

I'll be starting a BF2 clan out of the center; with an official EA hosted server. There's a lot of interest in this game, and in what it can offer a close group of individuals willing to operate as a team. It's a very rewarding game.

Please ignore my punctuation; I seem to be dropping them in at random.

I took mu second Judo class last night...ouch. Everything was going just fine until I tried a "front fall without arms". This is where you kick yourself around until your feet fly over your head and you land on your rounded back, softening the blow. Either mt back wasn't rounded enough or my kick wasn't hard enough, 'cause my shoulder is killing me. I can't even use my right arm to move the mouse and I've had ice on it for 12 hours.

I remember being about 8 years old and my parents driving the blue ridge parkway. It was early July, about 95 degrees out, and we were in, IIRC a Taurus wagon... I was in the back seat, between my two brothers.
End result was we spent 12 or 14 hours driving that day. They ooh'd and ahh'd over the scenery. I couldn't see a goddamn thing. Eventually, it got dark (in fact, I remember eating at a Dennys at about midnight or 12:30 checking into our hotel for the night at around 2:00AM), and at that point my brothers realized they were hot and cranky... so I spend the rest of the day getting smacked and/or elbowed every time we drove around a curve and I accident leaned into one or the other of them.
