Should just be renamed "where to go on vacation".

I wonder how much of that is biased by obese women, those with implants, or just some horny russian dudes? Was the research statistically sound and peer reviewed?

Why does Lenovo insist on including a pile of utilities that don't work worth anything? ThinkVantage Access Connections has got to be the most worthless pile of connection management crap I've ever touched. I can't even connect to a non-broadcasting wireless AP that's running WPA2. If I turn on the broadcast it will connect.

How much did they charge for the useless utilities? :spiderman: Can you uninstall them or does that bork the Windows?

Probably nothing... It's my new work PC. I uninstalled that pile of manure and switched to using the Intel wireless utility. Now I'm having to install all the missing drivers for system devices. The Device manager has a bunch of ? mark devices. Unbelievable...

At least you have admin access then. I could not even change the time zone on the work computer I had.

To add insult to injury they didn't use AHCI mode when they installed Windows XP, so the eSATA port on the system is basically worthless.

Windows XP on your new work PC??? Why not 7 with the XP Mode for the casual incompatible applications?
Got me... I guess the standard load is still XP. I should mention it's a very shoddy load of XP where a bunch of device drivers are missing or misconfigured.

I'd send it back to IT with a list of what's wrong, not really your job to fix it if it is that bad.

We are still on XP and thinking about 7 and XP mode for the replacements that are due the end of this year. They were supposed to get me a machine to evaluate to see if XP mode would work or if we need a full blown VM. I have never used XP mode myself.

I really don't like the way XP Mode works for much of anything besides MS Office. With Office, it's seemless and everything is perfect. Yay.

When I try it for the crufty old Win32 database apps my customers use for their businesses, I run into all kinds of weird issues when they try to run the apps in windowed mode. They close the application's window but Windows says it's still running and won't let them open it again, for example. And the steps they need to undertake to restart their programs are kind of intolerable: Load the full virtual machine, start task manager, kill the program, exit the full virtual machine, then restart the Windowed program.

The other option is to run a full-screen XP Mode all the time, but if they're doing that they wind up doing their web browsing and stuff in it, and at that point, why bother to install 7 in the first place?

If somebody told me that's what I had to do to use a program I needed to do my job every day, I'd rape them with the ugly side of a broken bottle and then piss on their corpse.

Fortunately, very few of my customers have any kind of serious investment in Windows 7 at this point.

Yeah, I'm sort of interested to try XP mode with our legacy software. Software that was designed for 95/95, has software keys that involves a crypkey system service. I can't imagine it's going to go well. I offered to test it out BEFORE we all get new machines later this year with 7 on them so we could plan on VMware and some XP licenses but I guess testing beforehand just isn't in the plan.

I'm almost happy to let it fireball, we have been trying to end support for that software for years now. Not even the original supplying vendor supports it now.

Just got a Mouser catalog in the mail. Who ships a 4" thick catalog to someone that placed an order online these days? Mouser catalog is like printing out every website that starts with the letter s and then mailing it to a friend. Uline shipping supply is no better, I get that fairly often too.

I got the same enormous catalog from Mouser after I bought my back-plates for the Perc. I couldn't believe they sent that to me.

I have no idea what you do for work and what is acceptable.

At some places it is only possible to use a certain USB thumb drive supplied by the IT. Other devices don't work for security reasons. I'm not sure how it is controlled, maybe with software?

Usually custom device drivers along with preventing the machine from loading any unapproved drivers. It is a real PITA for everyone involved. You need to work somewhere pretty anal before they go that far. The only times I've done it is government work.

Oh, I thought that he was a football player or something like that. I don't really follow the popular news.

I made it to the top 0.087% today. It's not that anyone will care when my productions diminish and cease, but still something.

Congratulations. Being good at something is always a rewarding feeling. Being that good at something where there are enough users to have a thousandth of a percent be a significant figure is impressive. I would be more impressed if I knew what it was, of course.

It's about participation on another forum. I have more posts there than anyone does here but less than half of the most profilic poster. Of course I don't have the free time that the retired and unemployed do, nor can I post from the office. Some of the newer people are posting like crazy and of course my time is coming to an end.

My power is down to 10 watt hours, so that is another problem that may end my posting really soon now. :rambo:
