I'll be the first to say so what? Last time I checked having principles and sticking to them is not a crime.

Principles are fine but if I don't agree with them I certainly don't have to be their customer. There's a nice long list of businesses I won't patronize because they actively support either anti-gay or anti-family-planning organizations.

Got this in the email this morning, I had no idea I was on their mailing list which I will be correcting.

Dear Reader,

It has come to our attention that Western Digital's Caviar Green HDDs suffer from a critical design flaw caused by an aggressive power-saving feature. Western Digital has developed a new technology called Intellipark (aka Idle 3 mode) and it is designed to reduce power consumption, in part by positioning the HDD's heads in a park position and turning off unnecessary electronics after 8 seconds of inactivity.

According to an in-house investigation and user reports', some software and operating systems are incompatible with the Intellipark feature causing endless head parking movement as the HDD continuously goes in/out of idle mode. This abnormal behavior creates stress on the HDD and that could lead to the following issues:

• Loud clunking/clicking/buzzing noises every few seconds.
• Artificially increases the number of load-unload cycles in S.M.A.R.T.
• Possibly shortens life-time of the HDD.
• Possibly reduces performance of the HDD.

WD can't hear you over the sound of how awesome it is. Go shortened drive life-span!

Did anybody catch Game of Thrones yet? Because episode one was awesome.

I normally handle a few of these a week, but today it has been crazy:

1. User declares that a file has been deleted.
2. When I ask the user where it was, they indicate a "recent documents" list of some kind.

They have no idea where the file actually is, and can't seem to grasp the idea that what they were looking at wasn't actually the file! Grrr....

Unified storage is our friend.

Earlier in the week my boss got a new laptop. Rather than ask me my opinion or indeed tell me that she was buying a new laptop, she bought one from Best Buy.

The guy at Best Buy told her about how awesome the "wireless wifi modem" in this laptop was, something that I have determined to be a Gobi 3G device, but that my boss now insists on calling "wireless wifi."

But setting up the Gobi costs $50/month, which the clerk apparently did not explain to my boss. Somehow, the fact that my boss cannot get on the internet anywhere in the continental United States is now my problem. She really did ask me to hack Verizon so that she could have "wireless wifi" for free.

So, yeah, that was my Tuesday.

So she want to magically have free internet access everywhere? Why don't you show her another magic trick instead? Sometimes, dumb users deserve an encounter of the third kind with the corner of a desk.

I hardly get internet in hotel rooms, much less anywhere else. Does that device only work in the Gobi desert? :D

Hmmm. I only have one kind of tire on all four rims whether it is summer, winter, or October.

Over on a cell phone forum i frequent there were people asking if rooting the phone and unlocking it could get them free phone/data service. There were planty of people interested in that.

I find it a bit staggering how people don't have the simplest grasp of the concepts involved of making something work.

A common website I visit diplays only that it is offline due to a major EC2 outage. WTF does that mean? Don't big websites have a backup of some sort?

I'm guessing you mean high availability or redundancy rather than backup.

http://news.yahoo.com/s/nf/20110421/tc_nf/78253

EC2 is supposed to provide redundancy.

By backup I mean an entire backup plan, such as having two different vendors. So if Amazon has a crap "clouding" system, your company should be able to switch to another vendor's services very quickly. Obviously it costs money to maintain a backup and many companies would not find it worthwhile.

Why is it that when I want to buy something it is not on sale that day and even if it is on sale I always forget to order until it is too late.

Been working on an assignment for Uni, implementing a data driven website in ASP.NET.

While I can certainly appreciate some of the things ASP.NET brings to the table, some of it leaves a lot to be desired. (Coming from some years of using PHP or coding CGI modules in straight C as a reference point).

2 things off the top of my head are the Menu control (while flexible, trying to format it via CSS is a nightmare) and not having the ability to have 2 ASP.NET driven forms on the same page without some clever hacks.

My biggest gripe at the moment, is not in relation to ASP.NET, but the assignment which nearly forbids using background code in either VB or C# to do things. We are to use only the built-in controls as is.

Most of the time I'm working around the asp.net framework to get stuff done. I have multiple forms on one page, they just aren't controlled by asp.net (no runat=server). And all my code is in the code behind module.

I have about 10K miles on mine now and I'm still enjoying them. They stick well, but I do notice a bit more sidewall flex when compared to my last tires (not a lot more). I've pushed them really hard in corners and they don't make any noise. Snow traction was also reasonable. The only way to improve would be with a dedicated snow tire.

Road noise is still reasonable after 10K. Hopefully this won't change after another 10K. When I was looking to buy mine, I was told they were on back order at most places, but my local mechanic was able to get them without problem. :dunno:

The road noise of the DWS vs my Eagle F1 A/S is night and day. I don't think mine is a fair comparison because the F1 A/S had horrible road noise. People who rode in the car with me asked if I had bad bearings, that's how bad the road noise was.

Those are the ones I'm considering for my car. My main concern with them is road noise. How do they compare to what you had before?
They seem quite a bit quieter on concrete than the Michelin Pilot Exalto A/S I had on the car before. I've used Toyo Proxes T1-S (summer tires), Toyo Proxes 4 (all seasons) in 245/40/18. I've used Michelin Arctic Alpin (snow tires), Continental ContiExtreme Contact, and Michelin Pilot Exalto A/S in 225/55/16, and Bridgestone Potenza RE92 (world's worst tire) in 225/50/17.

I'm back to the factory 17" wheels with the new DWS's (since decent tires are finally available in 225/50/17 at a price I'm willing to pay) and am attempting to sell my 16" steel wheels and my 18" Enkei wheels. The previous Continental's were my favorite winter tire. The Proxes-4 are a pretty weak tire in the snow. The Michelin Pilot Exalto A/S was okay, but not nearly as good as the ContiExtremeContact. I hope the DWS's are comparable though they seem to have much less aggressive tread. They have great reviews for snow traction on Tire Rack though (just like their predecessor). I guess time will tell...

The Continental ContiExtreme Contact was the OEM for my car, and it is way noisier than the Pirelli P-Zero Nero M+S that I'm running at the moment. That is an old tire, and I was hoping that something better would have come along by now.

Well, the tread pattern is drastically different between the ContiExtreme Contact and the DWS. I would think that the less aggressive tread pattern of the DWS should make them quieter.

I doubt it would have both restore disks. Anyway, that is not an upgrade.

You know it's a good day when someone sends an email to a HUGE email list (thousands of people) for something they needed and hundreds of people all reply-all at roughly the same time asking "please remove me from this email list" and then more people telling everyone not to reply to all (yet that's just what they did). Email servers are now crawling to a stand-still. I couldn't help but laugh. What a productive use of time... :rotfl:

edit: This was at work.
