I must be missing something, for my research indicates there are no large tablets (10+ inches) that are also useable as a cell phone. Am I wrong?

No. I believe Samsung has released at least one 8" tablet with phone capabilities, and you can do some things with Skype and/or Google Voice (or some other VOIP app; I can talk on my office phone line from my mobile devices with a pretty minimal amount of effort), but for the most part you're SOL if that's something you want. The Samsung Note line as big as things get for the most part.

But I don't think it's that awkward. It's a big device. It probably has pretty decent speakers. I suspect P5 probably doesn't have a huge, regular need to make calls if he's even asking a question about this kind of device as a phone.

There are a couple of Notes in my department that I can test if requested. I have an S4 coming for myself tomorrow.

I need to have a large screen to bring up remote documentation and blueprints (high ppi with a big screen is very useful), via web, without touching a customers internet/network or HW i.e. the tablet needs to be self-contained but needs to access its data remotely. Without access to a local Wifi or network, then 4g cell-phone data access is the next best choice. The tablet also needs to be able to phone tech-support (speaker phone is fine) while still displaying/manipulating the documentation/blueprints. I wanted to only supply one device to do the job rather than give out both a cell phone and a tablet with data plans for each.

I hadn't even considered a VOIP application and that may be the route I end up taking: Thanks Merc for the idea.

I think Merc has it. A big tablet with the best screen you can find and a data plan. Not sure what VoIP provider to recommend. I can only get the Vonage Extensions app to work on a device that already has a phone number, then it charges you for minutes (not megabytes) if you use it over 3/4G. Amazing ripoff IMHO.

I have Vocalocity ($15/month/line), but I haven't tried to make calls using a tablet. I'm not sure if I can or not, though I know I can from my phone. I know Google Voice won't let me initiate a call from my tablet.

Hey adding $15/month to the tablet is cheap compared to a extra cell phone + data plan.

That being said, it is sad that I can't find a big tablet that can also make calls. I can't be the only one that needs that capability. Considering what smart phones are, it would seem to me that it would be a relatively inexpensive and easy feature to add to a big tablet.

Talkatone can handle google voice numbers pretty well over a data connection. The call quality isn't the greatest but it's suitable. They have a subscription plan that lets you adjust for better quality but I haven't bothered with it.

There's also an iOS version if you decide to go that way.

The head of my local Purdue campus's physics department was one of the people awarded a Nobel prize today. I know her through Amy and I'm more than a little amused that anyone affiliated with Purdue's Hammond Campus would ever have been involved in Nobel-worthy work. I can only imagine what that's going to do for her departmental meetings from now on.

No. She's in some of the same social circles as my best friend.

The somewhat more amusing bit is that she's affiliated with this commuter campus of Purdue that really has no facilities at all to speak of, that has historically done everything possible to minimize its association with the main Purdue campus. I wonder if she'll stay at Purdue or move someplace decent, or if the association of a Nobel Laureate will be enough to focus the attention of the main campus on the three crummy classroom buildings in Hammond.

I thought my friend's group down at GaTech won the prize for chemistry, but it was somebody else doing the exact same thing.

We've often talked about how awesome Amazon is, and how they offer just about anything. I'm looking for a copper pipe fitting, specifically a tee where the straight-through bit is 1" and the tee bit is 3/4". This is a very common part, but I can't seem to find the bugger. Even the way more rare stuff is listed. I'm sure it's there, I must just be too tired.

According to Bleepingcomputers "some of you may have noticed, Bleepingcomputer.com was down for 2 hours this morning. This was due to a distributed DDOS attack on our web servers"

My wife recently went back to work, and I can promise you she had a much easier time at home with the kid. Is being a stay-at-home parent 100% vacation? Nope, but if it is as draining as working a full-time job you're doing it wrong. The days that I take off to spend with the kid (about once a week) certainly feel like vacation to me.

I started a bit of a row with some friends when I said that medicine is a subset of biology which is a subset of chemistry which is a subset of physics. I didn't think there would be a dispute on this, and no-one was able to provide a different starting place. Thoughts?

It depends on a lot of things, including how many children you have. My and my two siblings were close in age, my mom got pretty much zero help from my father with housework, and we didn't have a lot of modern appliances which make life easier like dishwashers. I remember my mom being busy all the time either shopping or cleaning or cooking or helping us with school. At the same time there were other stay at home moms who had time to sit and gossip on the bench. Then again, their children usually didn't turn out so well. I often hear how two salaries are needed to make ends meet these days. I wonder though if part of the reason is because the increase in the workforce with more women working has helped drive down wages to levels which require two salaries. Or perhaps people just have higher material expectations than they did 40 or 50 years ago. It's a complex issue. The article Chewy linked to touches on a lot of the subtleties. I could also make a good argument that it doesn't necessarily have to be the mother who is the stay-at-home parent, assuming you want to do it the "old-fashioned" way. Some women are far better wage earners than their husbands and lousy stay-at-home moms. In those cases it may make more sense to have a stay-at-home dad. One irony I've often heard with two wage earner couples is how in many cases they're not much better off. If you need a second car, more work clothes, day care, and other extras to go with that second salary ( 1/3 or more of which goes right out the window in taxes ) you may not be that much worse off if one parent just quits the work force. Just as some people really aren't cut out to be stay-at-home parents, others might not be so great staying in the workforce. You need to look at the big picture here.

The worst of both worlds are the women who work but get zero help or support from their husbands at home, like my sister and her ex-husband. That's like having two jobs.

I also want to add that I personally think we should have a lot more stay-at-home moms (or dads). I think having one parent around, not being shuttled into day care, adds a lot to a child's development. I tend to think the reason we have so many dysfunctional, maladjusted, insecure adults these days is because of limited parenting. You just don't get the same thing out of preschool or day care that you do from growing up with one parent at home. That's the way it was done until modern times. We seem to think we know better but often doing things in the time-honored fashion works best. I hear garbage like "quality time" and get sick. Nothing can substitute for spending lots of time with your children if you want to raise them properly. If both parents can spend a lot of time with the children then it's even better. If you both really need to work, but have extended family, like grandparents, around to help then that's nearly as good. The key is to have someone around most of the time who has a vested interest.

I removed a tree stump this afternoon using a 2¼lbs axe and a shovel. It took me almost two hours. I almost had to dig a hole beneath it in order to cut all the fu**ing roots. It was on a barely cleared field so there were lots of rocks too. I slept for a few hours afterward.
