Thanks Google for sending me an e-mail that I need to update the billing credentials for a domain that doesn't include the name of the domain. They include the last 4 digits of the offending credit card (since replaced), but I purchased all of the domains! I've set up 50+ of these things over the years, all with me as the account manager. Do I now need to log into all of them to find out which one it is?

They normally address the message to the Apps account administrator, so you should have something like ddrueding@hookersnblow.com or whatever your domain is.

WTF was that? Guys with pink hair and fifi wings are not manly. Neither is picking up stuff like if you have a broken wrist. I don't get the point. I wouldn't find that funny even after being injected with a lethal dose of morphine.

And a special thanks to our newest regular, sedrosken, for putting another nail in my coffin. Having a completely reasonable and mature conversation with someone who wasn't born when I graduated high school. :p

Join the club. Quite a few of the regulars here were born after or during the time I was in high school. Damn, I feel old...

I'm smiling: First snow of the year. After the first time, it's just a pain but the first is always enjoyable.

I have kids that are the same age as most of you.

My SO's mother apparently had a class with me in high school even though she's a couple years older than I am. I haven't met her yet but I'm not looking forward reminiscing about Mrs. Vance's government class.

re: First snow, it's best when it's on a weekend, so you don't have to do the thing where you have to dig out your car and spend and extra hour driving to work because everyone else on Earth is acting like they've never seen it before, let alone driven on it.

Looks like a fun idea. Nothing wrong with putting ideas down on paper.

Other issues could be weight related to food and water storage for lengthy flight and travel durations. Water may be collectable via clouds and rain...maybe. Batteries for solar energy storage might also add weight. There are many engineering challenges to overcome but with the right budget it'll be feasible.

Finally had some time to get more design down; switched to SolidWorks after finalizing the floorplan so I could get the mechanicals and physical properties going. Looks like the preliminary hull is 300 feet long with a max diameter of 80 feet, only 50% longer/wider than the Goodyear Blimps. This should be good for 33 tons of lift if filled with helium. I'm figuring a 10% loss for backpressure in the envelopes along with the volume displaced by the structure itself. That leaves 12 tons for the hull, 12 tons for the gondola, 5 tons for supplies (water, fuel, food), and 3 tons for cargo. This would certainly require some exotic materials to achieve (probably 13 tons of carbon fiber, and another 3 tons of kevlar for the skin)

You do know that we're running out of helium on Earth and that there's a good chance that it'll be awefully expensive by the time you reach your retirement plan, do you?

We are running out, but I don't think it will go that quickly. And even if it was 5 times more expensive than it is now (too much for party balloons, which would cut consumption considerably), it wouldn't be an appreciable percentage of this total build.

Of course, Hydrogen is a very tempting alternative, with only one obvious downside ;)

Edit: Other downside to Hydrogen is the ability for it to escape from just about anything (tiny molecule, H2), but I'd be able to produce it on the fly with electricity and water vapor, so that isn't that big a deal.

A third alternative which may well be feasible by the time you might be in a position to build this would be a vacuum. For now, no materials strong enough exist to build a lightweight structure of that size capable of containing a vacuum without imploding but in a few decades who knows?

Flammability aside, hydrogen seems ideal for this task. It can be produced from collected water and electricity in the quantities you would need to replace whatever diffuses through the gas bag. It also gives a few percent more lift than helium.

Hot air is a fourth alternative. Bring along a few politicians for an ample supply. :)

There is plenty of helium elsewhere.

Helium is harder to contain than hydrogen, as the H[SUB]2[/SUB] molecule diameter is larger than the He[SUB]1 [/SUB]molecule.

IIRC the Russians are building heavy lift lighter-than-air craft to transport heavy equipment to remote northern/Siberian outposts for oil/mineral extraction, so there might be suitable surplus craft for you by the time you start serious consideration of the project.

Well, I'm not sure that it is normal for the IT technical support people to design giant aircraft. But what do I know. IT where I work is different from what most of you do.

I'd imagine only about 30% of what I do would be considered IT by normal corporate standards. For my smaller clients I've done everything from financial planning to hiring, to architecture and property management. The "team" I can call on for projects includes general contractors, fabricators, lawyers, engineers, electricians, plumbers, and a small army of labor qualified in most types of heavy equipment.

But even for me designing a Zeppelin home is a bit out there. ;) The more I think about it the more I like the idea. Perhaps there is even a market for such a thing?

Cool. Thanks for the info.

Most of the ligher-than-air craft being designed currently seem to have some element of lifting-body in their design, that can't be a part of mine as loitering will be the primary occupation.

I was a good little geek yesterday, I stripped and cleaned my keyboard.... It's all nice and clean now... (and if I knew how bad it was before I started, I would have thrown it out and purchased a new one, it was that yucky).

Speaking of the joys of home ownership, Ms. Nitsirk has delightfully crappy DSL and consumer cable isn't an option in her area. She finally convinced Comcast's Business unit to come survey the area and she's been telling me for something like six weeks that she's going to get cable internet any day now.
Comcast finally got back to her on the cost to run the line: $113,000, even though her neighbor across the road has service. Ouch.

That is about the price they quoted me for my office. Even if we did the trenching, installed the conduit, and then handed the whole thing over to them.

That's why corporate monopoly isn't such a great thing. 113K$ to get standard web access is simply revolting. Some asshole would tell me that, he would be feeding my garden next summer.

Please tell me it's at least the girl from Wyoming and not someone in Chicago's suburbs?

Nits was one of my students. She has a house that's just a tad too far from actual civilization. Which, in my estimation, is that place where one can't get cable internet.
