Has SR finally passed on? Is it just another MFB situation?

We thought the same thing at the same time. See my post in that thread.

I don't think Eug & Dave could have done that though. It must be a problem with the site host rather than something from the site's owners.

On the other hand, if the following message is there :
You may now add content to the directory /var/www/html/. Note that until you do so, people visiting your website will see this page, and not your content.
Then it means that /var/www/html/ is empty, which means there is no more SR elsewhere than on backups.

I got a database error when I try to reach it late last night. I don't know if that's related.

same here steve.

This is the apache test page that you'd see on a freshly installed server. It could be that they are changing which server the site is hosted on or they ahve made changes on the hosts end and possibly changed the IP of the hosting server... it might mean that DNS has to propagate (which could take another day before we see SR again

It could also be that the server is misconfigured (ie: pointing to the wrong directory)

whatever it is, i'm sure it'll be fixed in the next day or so.

1/8/2004 03:30 EDT - About 14 hours ago our ISP embarked on upgrading our OS to a more recent version. As is wont to be the case, complications have arisen. Rest assured that no data has been lost, save perhaps a few community messages. We'll continue to work to get all features up and running ASAP. Thanks for your patience!

well I guess that's one way to stop a troll from posting  :p

I do believe that SR is seeing little green men creeping out from under every nook and cranny and they think they are the first line in home land defense and security. ha ha

As I have stated before a BBS is a place for everyone to discuss what is on their minds and not a place for one of two people to decide what is appropriate to their way of thinking, in other words you take the good with the bad is that not what the USA is supposedly built upon free speech.

That's one of the things... freedom to have your own beliefs and be able to express them.

However, I'm not going to let someone come into my home and "troll" me. SR is a privately owned website, it is a privaledge to post there, not a right. Eugene and Davin can do whatever they want there.

Just remember that at one time, "we the people" were those whiners.
Of course, I've freely given SR money to maintain the site, which I think puts me a step above the hordes who didn't.

It seems some people misunderstand the difference between a open forum and a close one.

A open forum is a place where everyone is welcome and no Criteria for membership is required Except maybe a need for a email address and where a discussion is not always to everyone's liking.

A close forum is a place where people will meet to discuss a topic where everyone has the same point of view and the discussion is one sided it is also not uncommon for these members to believe it is a privilege to be a member there.

Open or not, people posting in a certain forum should keep in mind what's the purpose of the forum and why it's been created. It's just a matter of respect and civility. Going to a place called storagereview to post 500 jokes unrelated to IT when several veteran members of that place obviously try to send the message that those jokes aren't very appreciated crosses the line IMO. Doing the same thing at a website called www.badhumor.com would, however, be ok. I wouldn't, for instance, go to a place called (fictive name, I haven't verified) www.supportrepublicanparty.nut and express my opinion regarding chimp Bush. It would obviously disturb the membership and cause several flame wars.

You just have to use your head. It's not because a place is opened to all that everything can be posted there. I think people are right to expect others to post messages relevant to other members of a given message board. You don't have to always agree with everyone, that's not the point. But keeping in mind the global purpose of the forum and the area of interest of the membership is important. Not doing so is "trolling" IMO.

I suggest that you take another look at the interest and the number of people that acutely open that Joke thread , Where I come from it is the interest of the majority not the few that dictates What is put into a thread and obviously if it is appreciated by the majority the few that are complaining are the one`s trolling and they are the people that are trying to cause a flame war.

As for Keeping in mind what's the purpose of the forum and why it's been created I would suggest that 99 percent of what is Wrote in that part of the forum has nothing whatsoever to do with what the forum was created for.

I agree with you Mercutio. Clearly you and I (I have donated as well) are a step above the restless hordes who pinch their pennies. No doubt that's why we've risen to the top. :)

Now... who do we see about getting our monies worth?

"flagreen" is SR user 6. "Mercutio" is user 7. I believe "ddrueding" is 8 (this is from memory).

We're the low number guys because we WERE the first to step up when SR was in trouble. Our accounts were recreated after the MBF becuase E&D had paypal records indicating our usernames and email addresses outside the forum DB.

There ARE hordes at SR. That's why I very seldom visit any more. I'm not elitist, but I hated logging in and not seeing posts from anyone I knew. SR/SF has been my only social outlet for quite a while now. And of course the endless RAID0 and basic data recovery questions...
Finding out that hard-core trolls are spending time over at SR is really disheartening.

As for rising to the top, Bill, I place a lot of value on the fact that I had a good year despite the hard times a lot of techies are having. Means more contributions for my favorite leftist organizations. :)

Like SF? :p

Actually, (although I have given money to SR) the reason ddrueding1 has such a low number is that right after the MBF I tried to login and couldn't (username not found) so I created a second account for myself (the original being the same as my handle here). I keep wondering if I could ask them to change my handle back....

"Status Update 09 January 2004

Hi folks,
Around 1 PM EST on the 7th our ISP embarked on a plan to help us migrate from the Red Hat Linux 7.3 setup that the site previously ran on to Red Hat Enterprise 3. The plan was simple... add an RHE3 installation imaged to a drive as a secondary master while keeping our production 7.3 unit in place so we could copy over and configure at our leisure.

Instead, however, the ISP proceeded to remove our primary master drive and replaced it with a fresh, empty RHE3 installation... then promptly misplaced our original drive.

We've spent the past 36 hours uploading our last daily backup at a painfully slow pace. Most of the data is in place- all site features except the forum (the database of which is having tricky problems with MySQL3) and features that depend on the forum login (the reliability survey and reader polls) should be up and running without a hitch. Importing the forum database is a bit more complicated since RHE3 includes (sigh) MySQL3 while the forum database was powered by MySQL4. Though MySQL's site states that v3 can accept dumps generated by v4 without a hitch, practice, as usual, has been different (Update 3:35 AM: MySQL4 upgrade complete, forums operational)."

Time to find a decent web host I think.

I, too, financially supported SR during it's time of need. At the time it was a great site for all things storage and I really enjoyed the forums. As I do here, I read more than I posted so my post count never got to be that high. Sure, there were threads to ignore here and there, and the trolls got to be annoying after a while. Once SF got underway, my desire to visit SR lessened to the point where I don't go there at all anymore. I don't even think the site is in my bookmarks.

I hold no particular grudge against E&D now, although I was rather upset about the way things were handled at the time. At this point, my time is limited and SF is where I choose to spend it. I enjoy most of the conversations here and contribute more often than I ever did at SR.

Ha! Where have you been? :D
Considering that I do not post all that much on SF, why is that surprising? ;)

As for where I've been, overseas till just before Christmas, with family for Christmas and New Year's, and up to my eyeballs with work in between. :(

SR was indeed having some sporatic issues. I wouldn't rule out sabotage, Tea, the OT:polizei, and the Artillerie-Kommandeur von der Sprachwissenschaft Polizei have been scheming something for the past few days.

It's definitely jacked. As least four times in the last hour, I've gotten the PHP script rather than the page....

Wow, are they that busy now to be getting a "too many connections" error... or maybe they had a runaway script...

Well, there are a lot of people out there trying to figure out why the Sandra scores on their RAID 0 is so low....
