Nasty, nasty. I'm glad the driver who was broadsided survived.

A couple of years ago a driver in a Jeep Cherokee in Orange County, CA, wasn't so lucky. A large 2-axle construction truck loaded with gravel, going downhill too fast with lousy brakes, and the truck driver on narcotics, broke a red light, broadsided the Cherokee on the driver's side and crushed him to death. Nasty even to read about it in the papers.

Is that real? Some of the debris looks a LOT like stunt cabling, designed to flip the car...

DAYTON | Doctors revived a man Sunday just hours after medics pronounced him dead on the scene of a car crash, police officials said.

Dayton Police Sgt. Charles Hurley said Scott Tegtmeyer was walking in the intersection of Third Street and Edwin C. Moses Boulevard at 12:40 p.m. when a Chrysler PT Cruiser ran a red light, struck a Subaru sports utility vehicle and sent it into the air.

The Subaru landed upside down on Tegtmeyer and dragged him several feet across the intersection, Hurley said. Tegtmeyer, bloodied and surrounded by shattered glass, was pronounced dead on the scene, but he suddenly started breathing while in transit with paramedics. By 3 p.m., doctors had fully resuscitated him.

On Sunday evening, he was in the Miami Valley Hospital Intensive Care Unit.

Neither of the female drivers of the vehicles involved were carrying passengers. The woman driving the Subaru was transported to Miami Valley Hospital. Information on the condition of the driver of the PT Cruiser was not available. Hurley said police talked to eight witnesses. He also said it is possible a camera mounted high above the intersection captured the crash.

Dayton police reconstructionists, trained at putting clues together after crashes, were on the scene with digital cameras and measuring devices. The flipped Subaru showed noticeable crash damage on the left body panel. Ten yards away, the customized P.T. Cruiser with a "AAA" sticker on the back of its tinted windows showed damage to its front end.

A crash a few days later was written up in the Dayton Daily News. They mention the earlier crash which was caught on the video Handy posted.

You have to register if you really want to read it. They don't provide much detail, except to say that the poor pedestrian was alive for some number of days in intensive care. Presumably he didn't make it. Judging by that video he was so close. Just another couple of feet and he'd probably have survived.

Just last night I was driving away from Dave and Busters in the Great Mall in Milpitas (near San Jose) when there was a really nasty one of these in front of me. The offender was in a Dodge Neon while the enforcer was in a Durango (SUV). At least 4 other cars were involved (the roads are 4 lanes wide each through the intersection). I would be amazed if everyone survived.

I am assuming that the car that flipped over had the green light. If so the pedestrian must have been walking against the "Don't Walk" signal. Either that or the PT Crusier had the green light?

I think it appropriate to assume that the stopped cars had the red light. I think the ped was going to be squashed either way, the Subaru did not change course or speed that much. Just another reason why people shouldn't walk.

He booked it across the street when he saw the car rolling towards him. He should have been seeing the "do not walk" sign. The PT definitly ran a light because the other cars going in the direction were slowing down. I also think the person in the suburu must have had momentum and just caught the light as it turned green. They couldn't have been stopped at a red light...they were moving too darn fast coming across the intersection when the accident occurred... I watched the video about 25 times and I think the suburu was going just as fast as the PT...

Regardless, I'll think twice about taking my time crossing a street...

I live at a big intersction and I've seen many people run the red lights...to the point where I've almost hit them. I'd like to hurt some of these people.

Are you supposed to stop walking if the signal changes when you're in the middle of the road?

No I don't think so. Either way, walk or don't walk, it wasn't the ped's fault. I was taught that pedestrians always have the right of way.

I drive very defensively and slow down at every intersection at least enough to make sure that no one is going to plow into me. Being in an accident is a pain in the ass and expensive even if you're not at fault.

Disagree. The Subaru was travelling in the left west* bound lane. The Pedestrian was already within the right west bound lane at the moment the two cars impacted. The Subaru is noticeably driven northwards (as should be expected) before it even begins to roll. Go full screen mode and use the black (tire mark) lines in the road as a reference point and you'll see what I mean. Had the pedestrian froze the instant he heard the crash, he might just have been in the clear. It certainly would have been close.

* according to our onscreen perspective

Check out the amount of break time on the PT....maybe 15 feet?
