What is this 'twitter'? I was under the impression it was more or less like this parody spoof by Lisa Nova, correct?

TWITTER WHORE part 2

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CwGzdbLweUI&feature=dir

Ok, I 1st learned (can't say I keep up to date on latest fads on a weekly basis :D) about this "twitter" thingy, when someone I know, started using/mentioning it on her blog. Already rather self-absorbed to a flaw, I figured only people so obsessed with themselves like Paris would use such a service. yeah, just checked, she's still twittering...jtr was supposed to read one month of her rants as torturous punishment :D

I was wrong :p. Seems Congress is addicted to twittering (isn't that the correct grammar? where does two 'e's come into "tweet"? or is it "tweeting" and "tweets" means plural of "tweet" verb or noun????). Computer illiterate Senator McCain uses twitter more than any other, go figure.

http://www.time.com/time/politics/article/0,8599,1878773,00.html

Is this primarily an American cultural phenom, or do Aussie's suffer from the same affliction? :p.

Did not know you could reply to, or post in reply to a twittee's (possessive word??) 140 word limited/dumb musings/rantings. I thought people just subscribe to twitter's (word again?) acct, and just read the rants of these twitters (word?)...am I wrong?

Snoop Dogg, but no matter. The rapper's Twitter profile is unique in that he actually seems to respond to fans, telling his thousands of "playas" to "keep pimpn" and giving love to his many "nephews" several times a day. All in between pushing his new show on MTV, of course.
LOL, PC Guy is #4 celebrity twitter acct. Sort of figures, aren't twitter accts for those individuals who are terminally vain ("you're so vain, you probably think this thread/post is about you, bout you"...sing it Carly :D ), for the most part?

Any SF members care to volunteer their tweet behavior :p ?

Kind of figures Lance Armstrong *big ego*, but Arnold the Govenator; wtf, he has time to waste- to be twittering...or does his staff just do it for him???

one last thing, wtf is 'TweetDeck' ?!?!

Twitter is simply another way for people to freely provide information about themselves than can be used against them either immediately or in the future. Really. People are stupid enough to post their current whereabouts, providing prime info for burglars or child kidnappers. Ex: "Hey I'm seeing Slumdog Millionaire for the 4th time right now" directly translates into "please rob my home. you have a couple of hours. maybe more if i tell you i'm going for drinks after the show."

Seems Congress is addicted to twittering
I think you could just as easily say Congress is a bunch of twits.

The only social networking site, forums like SF excluded, I participate in is LinkedIn since it has professional/career ramifications and you have decent controls over what is posted and who can see it. I've no desire to provide PII or time to casually surf sites like Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, and the like. Not to mention their terms of service aren't necessarily in the user's favor (see Facebook's recent snafu).

Well, I guess I did join Classmates a few years ago when my high school reunion was organizing. But I haven't touched it in years.

I have a great deal of difficulty understanding the appeal of services like Myspace and Facebook. Of course, I don't have any friends except the ones I keep up with on Internet forum sites like this.

FWIW, I don't see any use to them either.

Same, I find zero appeal in uploading my personal information to a site, where I assign them rights to do whatever with said information.

I guess that may be just the experience I had when serving in the Army, and all the talks on personal security and that the less information you expose about yourself, the better off you are.

At first I found no use for facebook, but signed up to see what it was all about. After 8-9 months it became a nice way to stay up to date with friends, girlfriend, and other activities along with playing simple games between them. It also makes for a nice journal to see where I was at and what i was doing a year ago today. If you have no friends or people you socialize with on facebook, then it really wouldn't have any purpose or appeal.

I tried getting into twitter, but it hasn't seemed to find it's purpose for me just yet.

If you're single I could maybe see Facebook / Myspace being useful if you're into the whole dating scene and are outgoing. However, I'm shocked at the amount of information people put up for everyone to see.

It has become pretty obvious to me that the most outgoing people in real life are the most active on Facebook. I have over 300 FB friends. I have Facebook on my phone and check it every hour on average.

Regarding privacy, I've revealed more personal things here than there.

Twitter seems to be for more urgent information than other technologies. I could see Capital Hill getting more use out of it than I would but for the most part seems to be driven by people with boundary issues (like Lisa Nova spoofs in the video) or attention whores. That is, attention whores more promiscuous than I.

Then there's this guy:

Celebrities using the blogging site to mold their online image might help the service hit the mainstream. But can it make money?

Really hilarious to see Congress members, live during a presidential address to Congress, tweeting on their Blackberrys. Can only imagine what they are typing in 140 characters or less..."Obama's plan sucks!" "earmarks blow"

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090304/ap_on_go_co/congress_spending_21

"How does anyone justify some of these earmarks: $1.7 million for pig odor research in Iowa; $2 million 'for the promotion of astronomy' in Hawaii; $6.6 million for termite research in New Orleans; $2.1 million for the Center for Grape Genetics in New York," he said.
He also noted the legislation includes 14 earmarks requested by lawmakers for projects sought by PMA Group, a lobbying company at the center of a federal corruption investigation.

McCain's tweets:
"pig odor research just stinks!!!".

Here a tweet, there a tweet; everywhere a tweet, tweet :D

Cant say I actually know what these things are, other than being websites where you can post stuff about yourself if you haven't got anything more interesting to do (such as watch some paint drying). Why would you bother?

You got to slow down Tannin. There are some fine times to be had watching paint dry and grass grow with a good beer in one hand and some fine pipe tobacco in the other. Your going to have a heart attack man. :)

How do you ever expect to get to a minimal 5k entries count on your twitter accts at this rate? :p Or 1 million followers like Aston?

I place no value on post counts. I read far, far more than I write.

So far I see most "social networking" sites as little more than a potential drain on my time and I've little enough of that as it is.

The Twitter pandemic: Swine flu defines social media’s new age

http://www.tgdaily.com/content/view/42206/114/

^^^see, I told you there is a social disease of near pandemic proportions... "twitteritis"

Even the US White House is now on Tiwitter/WhiteHouse, along with MySpazz & Facebook accts.

Surely all those people with iPod Touch & iPhone's are mostly to blame :).

UPDATED: Twitter hacker leaks info, peek behind the scenes at Obama

http://www.tgdaily.com/content/view/42279/108/

The screenshots reveal that both Lily Allen and Ashton Kutcher had blocked celebrity gossip blogger Perez Hilton from being able to send them messages. President Barack Obama blocked 96 Twitter users. The leaked pages additionally included blacklisted user lists and configuration settings for the site.

Biz Stone released a statement following the security breach. “Password information was not revealed or altered, nor were personal messages (direct messages) viewed. Twitter takes security very seriously so we will be conducting a thorough, independent security audit of all internal systems and implementing additional anti-intrusion measures to further safeguard user data.”

Twitter said it has contacted those users whose accounts were compromised.

Dorne feels that Twitter’s security is still “very weak”. For instance, when attempting to log in to a Twitter administrative account using admin.twitter.com a login prompt is displayed. Twitter usernames are available publically meaning that someone wanting to gain unauthorized access would merely need to figure out the password.

The hacker claimed to have accessed the account by first hacking Goldman’s Yahoo account: "One of the admins has a Yahoo account, i've reset the password by answering to the secret question. Then, in the mailbox, i have found her [sic] twitter password," wrote Hacker Croll in a posting via an online discussion forum on Wednesday. "I've used social engineering only, no exploit, no xss vulnerability, no backdoor, np sql injection." This action was confirmed by Goldman via a Tweet on the social networking site.

I'll bet SD is one of those 96 accts Obama blocked :rotfl:

http://www.thehollywoodgossip.com/2010/02/did-you-miss-tila-tequila/

We don't give Miley Cyrus credit often, but we can say this about the 17-year old: she deleted her Twitter account and never looked back.

She's also not clinically insane.

The same can't be said about Tila Tequila, who claimed to have quit the social networking service on Monday (because it's the "MOST HATEFUL, DEVIL WORSHIPPERS, RACIST, AND VIOLENT COMMUNITY THAT I HAVE EVER EXPERIENCED"), only to fire it back up today.

She wrote:
"Damn Twitter was f***ing BORING without me huh? I would be bored as hell if I were U and I wasn't on twitter anymore! hahhaha jk xox."

sigh

... there goes another 20 minutes i'll never see again ...

I stopped when I hit this one:

e: I'd get a bunny if they weren't so stupid.
me: They're brilliant!
e: They chew extenstion cords!
me: So do you!
e: Yeah, but for me it's a religious obligation.
me: What religion is that?
e: I'm not allowed to tell outsiders.
me: How do you know I'm not a member?
e: Obviously, you'd be chewing extension cords.
