640GB? It seems like WD is trailing in platter density. A few years ago they were first with larger drives. A least we will see cheaper large drives though.

Western Digital seems to have trouble figuring out how to stick that third platter into their newer drives....

Do companies actually make money from larger drives? I know the raw margin is vastly better, but when you set the R&D costs against the number actually sold (tiny) .... does it stack up?

It depends . . . typically the answer is no, they do not make much money. The largest profit margin comes from having a full share in the Enterprise market. Seagate has done outstandingly well in this arena, which has helped them float their ATA side of business (this usually runs at an even breaking point or a loss).
