    Thank You Google Fiber

I think it really happened around the time (early 2000's), when web-development started to be done by artists/graphics designers, and not programmers largely due to the tools that made it so accessible to non-coders.

Let's see: Most web-developers were careful about the size of the final page as delivered... (bytes were often counted, including all image sizes, to ensure a page could be downloaded in under 5 secs) Hardly any use of javascript... and certainly very little inclusions from around the web...

PC Gaming = World of Suck

So what's so wrong with Steam? Shouldn't it be possible to install w/steam and then just uninstall the Steam component, or at least disable it's service when playing the game? (Didn't realise the steam components took so much CPU/RAM doing nothing)?

By acquiring a copy from another source without those restrictions is not inline with the original license you purchased, and therefore can be considered morally wrong as you are following...

Merc, fantastic effort on the weight loss... Re: BMI, the best advise is to ignore BMI completely (it falls apart in way too many situations), and look simply at body fat percentage. (and with many consumer grade scales that have semi-accurte body fat mesasurement, this is the way to go). I...

Personally, I normally just rip direct from disk (via ffmepg or mencoder cli), but on occassion have used ddrescue to extract the disk to an ISO, and perform a normal conversion based on the ISO... (ddrescue is like a regular dd, but has options for skipping and retrying bad blocks, which is...

Fast CPU for video transcoding? Xeon?

What are you encoding to? and what software are you using? For example, if targetting h.264, then nVidia cards can do GPU accelerated encoding via "nvenc" (uses CUDA)... Router recommendations for network partitioning (and dual-WAN)?

The way you've described it, I don't know of any off the shelf routers that will do all that. A server that's built with 16ports and Wifi can certainly do it, with the correct DHCP and firewall service setup, but don't know of an off-the-shelf solution.

Router recommendations for network partitioning (and dual-WAN)?

Not going to discuss actuals products, but... You don't need a router with a large number ports if you use a decent L2/L3 switch between the gateway router and their internal gateway devices... eg, the building has an IP range of 9.1.1.100/27. For example each business is on a separate floor...

@Tannin, the same would also apply to AMD as well... considering their sockets tend to have a longer life span in availability, but you pretty much always require a BIOS update if you wish to use a new CPU in an older motherboard. How is that any different in the current Intel world since socket...

    i7-4960X / Socket 2011 issues

IMHO it's the BIOS/UEFI developers that are at fault... The basic problem is that they don't have a safe fallback mode if an unknown CPU is installed, but instead rely on discrete lists of known CPUs and required configurations. If the BIOS on startup doesn't recognise the CPU, then they...

IIRC, it's alsa muting by default. Use alsamixer to unmute the primary channel, then save the alsa state. Reboot and you should be fine. Out of interest, did you have these issues under Arch, or has installing Ubuntu proven to be more difficult due to oddities in the defaults?
