    Goodbye Firefox

This is the part that worries me... Are Adobe going to provide the binaries for all platforms that Firefox runs on? (I'm thinking the *BSDs and Solaris mainly, and where GNU/Linux runs on non x86 architectures, eg ARM, SPARC, MIPS, OpenRISC, etc). And I certainly don't trust Adobe to write...

    Recovering vanished partitions.

Sounds like you just lost the first sector, and just restoring the MBR with partition information is enough to get the disk back. (If however the on disk filesystem structures have been overwritten then backups are your easiest and best option). Was the disk using MBR or GPT partitioning? (GPT...

AdBlock Plus - Counter productive ?

Likewise, I would rather lose some CPU performance and memory to not have to deal with ads... (Also, something the article fails to mention as a counterpoint - over the past few years, people wishing to spread malware are now targetting ad servers to act as serving hosts for drive-by malware...

    Goodbye Firefox

@Tannin, no problem. I only hope that by the next ESR release Mozilla has back pedalled a little bit on or corrected the UI. (ESR being targetted at enterprise environments, were change is a little less desired).

Tannin, do you know about the ESR releases of Firefox? These are the stable long term suppoprted versions, and receive bug fixes as needed... Current ESR release is Firefox 24.5.0.ESR. (based on FF 24). https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/organizations/

    Goodbye Firefox

I don't mind the changes, the only issue I have is how tabs are now rendered. It's hard to make out the different tabs with my current GNOME theme, as well as the default GNOME theme (in both GNOME 2.30 and GNOME 3.10/3.12).

"The inevitable arrival of subscription-based Windows"

I interested in how and why you have this opinion that "Linux clowns" are intentionally trying to be different? Do you consider the Windows UI and UX and other MS developed technologies to be the pinnicle of achievement? Do you consider the effort to improve the UI/UX or other core technologies...

"The inevitable arrival of subscription-based Windows"

Already happening... LSB (Linux Standard Base) already defines a lot, and a lot of distros' are moving to using systemd as the init environment... The only other change is package management, but with GUI applications handling most of the underlying differences, most users shouldn't be too out...

"The inevitable arrival of subscription-based Windows"

Seriously, WTF, this is a clear money grab... especially targetting those users who only upgrade their desktops/laptops when they die. (eg every 5-8 yrs). As for GNU/Linux taking over... I certainly would love to see alternate systems getting more market share than Windows (ideally, I would...

What were you worst computer related mistakes made?

Just did it... (This is certainly not the worst, but the most recent). FYI, with DLNA IIRC there is only 1 mandated video and audio codec (MPEG2 and MP3 respectively), however the DMS (DLNA Media Server) and DMP (DLNA media player) may advertise support for additional codecs, via the client profile as setup via uPNP. If there are matches, the DMS and DMP may use...

We actually have a similar problem now with some of the USB based chip/jtag readers we have at work - there are only drivers for Win7 x86 (32bit). XP computers in a business environment

But isn't .NET Framework available on newer OSes? And which version of MSSQL? The only one I know that has issues is MSDE2000 (MS SQL2000 based) with 7+, but there are migration guides for moving MSDE 2000 to MS SQL 2005 Express without upgrading the rest of the application.

XP computers in a business environment

I agree with Coug, certainly poor planing if there are only general business applications involved. (I do note, that there are some instances where due to installed software not working with anything beyond XP, you need to run XP, but these should be rare for most SMB). Will it be a big deal...

SSDs - State of the Product?

My wife and I are anti-samsung simple for the piss-poor service, not because of their products (well, Samsung makes good hardware, but can't write software for shit - so some of their products should be avoided).
