    question Mobile Phones

AMOLED Screens Hi, Just like to find out if any others had had warping issues with AMOLED touchscreens on their phones? Just noticed on my wife's Samsung phone that the screen has warped, resulting in v.poor touch responsiveness. My only thought is heat from the charging process, and poor...

Well, my current ISP STILL has not fixed the problem, and the core router upgrade has been pushed back AGAIN. (It was scheduled for April, and now scheduled for 3rd Jul - like they are going to do a core router upgrade that will take 50% of their customers offline for an hour or so, 3 days into...

    Active Directory Domain gotcha

Reading the links time gave me, when you run 'dcpromo' to create the DC, it'll attempt to turn off write caching on the drive that houses the active directory database. It's that turning off of the write cache that may not work on some systems, is causing the issue. Now this could be a chipset...

    Media Player Appliances

That's because MPEG2 is the only required format, and as we know most manufacturers will do anything to reduce cost. IIRC, the only devices that will go beyond MPEG2 support are BR players (and they only add in the codecs needed for BR playback) or software driven solutions like Windows Media...

    question Mobile Phones

time, I don't know who you are with, but as a comparison here is the Telstra IR rates page. http://www.telstra.com.au/mobile/internat_roaming/ A $29 data pack for IR gets you a huge 10MB, and anything over the 10MB will incur a rate of $15.00 per 1MB (charged per KB). A 50c flag fall is paid...

I know 300MB isn't that bad when compared to a modern Windows variant, but when you only have 1GB, using 1/3 of your RAM just for the OS/DE isn't ideal. Anyway, I just learnt a cool trick in using 'udev' to automout USB keys with using any 3rd party volumn management software.

Yep, Mozilla have moved to a quick release schedule similar to Chrome. In reality, many see FF5 as merely FF4.1, as the number of new features added is nothing compared to FF3 -> FF4. According to https://wiki.mozilla.org/Releases , FF6 will be in BETA on 5 Jul 2011. Interestingly Thunderbird...

Televisions as monitors: What are you using, and why?

Reading up on it, it's capable of taking 2 separate inputs, and giving each input exactly half the screen, eg 2048x2048. But you still need a card that can drive that resolution. On the specs page for the AMD HD 6990 card, it says that: So, it even though it supports DP1.2, it still can't...

Televisions as monitors: What are you using, and why?

Nothing mainstream will do it. Having a quick look at the top end nVidia Quadro and Quadro NVS, they top out at 2560x1600. AMD in the FireGL series is similar, nothing above 2560x1600 for a single output. The only one I know that does cards that support that res or higher is Matrox. The MED5MP...

Televisions as monitors: What are you using, and why?

Contact Samsung support, and hope they'll actually do something about it. As a quick test, try hooking up a blu-ray player to it, and see if it'll do 1080p? It'll give more weight that the problem is with the TV and not the video card when talking to Samsung. (You can tel them you've tried...

Televisions as monitors: What are you using, and why?

My gut feeling is that: 1. The EDID information from the TV is fubar, hence the card can't set the right mode. 2. The gfx card, doesn't understand the latest version of EDID, which the TV may be giving out. To confirm 1, can you dump the EDID information and see if 1920x1080 modes are present...

I would recommend that you continue to use KDE. I've been using GNOME3 fulltime for a few weeks, and still can't get used to it. Also the amount of settings removed that allow for tweaking is just incredible. The killer one for me, was removal of the DPI setting. On the netbook, I use 72dpi...

It certainly would. Just mapping line vector drawing to 2D display can be difficult to do efficiently. (Remember the original hardware drew in line vectors, it had no idea about pixels). Something else I was considering is a top-down FPS, like a mix of "Z" top down, but with FPS style game...

    netbook hard drive replacement

I've used Win7 and WinXP on a HP 2140 netbook (Atom N270 w/1GB RAM), and performance was about the same with either OS (the naked eye couldn't tell the difference). The one area Win7 did better was power management, Win7 always got more runtime on battery.

A quick check on Newegg shows quite a few SSDs (including the 40GB Intel 320) for less than $100. Alternatively, they also have a 320GB 7200rpm Seagate for $49.99, or several options at 160GB@7200rpm for less than $50. If going a full laptop, what would you consider and what type of budget?
