SSDs - State of the Product?

Aren't the datacenters responsible for the hardware as part of MSA with SLA? I don't know how you would be exceeding the DWPD on personal drives, but the obvious solutions are either to replace the hardware regularly or to use larger drives so the TBW is better matched to the workload. At what...

Well somebody bought a bunch of computers at work this year that are all iNtel. I am regular laptop mandatory and have two options, Lendova X1 style or MS Surface style. Some home office users can get desktops, but I don't think any are AMD either. The MS uses some funkified power supply and...

SSDs - State of the Product?

I surely hope the value of SSDs decreases in 2025. For 2024 I can live with two sets (primary and secondary) of 12+8 TB internally. I really want to go to the U.2/U.3, but that will depend on AMD and iNtel. The 870 aSSMedia 4-lane TB is a huge step down into the toilet.

My usual builds have the two CPU fans and the nearby rear case fan all controlled by the CPU temperature. All three fans are Nocturnal and work well over the ranges with PWM control. They are quiet most of the time, but ramp up when the CPU is under load (there is a delay to prevent...

It is my understanding that the idle power does not increase if the voltage is well controlled. The system only uses full power when it is needed under high load. The video cards do the same as you know. You can always reduce the power also, but it's nearly pointless on those 65W CPUs. I...

SSDs - State of the Product?

I'm not convinced that lousy AI is particulary better than lousy humans. With humans there would be individually bad drivers, but if a whole fleet of vehicles has the same type of defect, there can be more widespread damages. :( I want assistive AI, but don't need a 30.72TB U.2/U.3 drive for...

Unless you are off the grids or have a dinky machine, who cares much about power in a desktop system until you get to the top models? The GPU uses far more power anyways if I understand the game plays. I just want the 9700X to ramp up to high power when needed without needing a PhD of OC. I...

I'm sure they will, but the CPU cores need to improve also. I still feel that the single-threaded speed will always be important. If AMD and iNtel become lame-os then I will have to reconsider the 2026 cycle, but after the Olypicams. In the short term I will live with the old-school AM5 600...

AMD is going from 5nm to 4nm on the 7000 to 9000 series (the Zen 4 mobile CPUs/APUs got 4nm earlier). Supposedly APPLE paid for priority on the 3nm process for quite a while. I guess we will get 3nm desktops on Zen Part 6. I'm not sure that 5 to 4nm and the other minor differences make a big...

The Seasonic has really cheap modular cables. The gauge looks too thin, like it would not carry a fully populated load without voltage drop and noise. Fortunately I would not use all the SATA or MOLEX connectors. There is a power switch for the fan. Is there some reason to have it always on...

Wouldn't it be better to run a 9950X at 120W than the 9900X at 120W? How are you measuring the power and efficiency, peak power in W or Wh to perform a certain amount of calculations? I found surprisingly little difference on the 7950X at 120W compared to 170W settings, and just less at 95W...

That Meltdown was a killer, losing about 11% on my new ultralight laptop that was overpriced and underpowered enough already. It seems lately that AMD is a better bet overall. I suppose the new INtel cdesktop CPUs for 2025 will be more power efficient and that they will play it safer with the OC.

Every inch matters in this case. The modern modular cables make it worse. I will try the Seasonic, but not be able to install it permanently until much later on. I should be able to test the CPU on B650M without a video card since there are DP and HDMI ports on the back.
