The trial ISO I got from MS didn't give me the opportunity to use another key during install, hence the workaround. I've always done trial and put in the key at the end as well. I'm not sure I'd do that with a production server though.

The answer to that question is yes. I do maintain images with Home and Pro licenses and I check them against desktop and mobile platforms as I encounter new chipsets. I've never had a problem with Windows 10 or 11 activation on brand-name systems.

You're talking about telephoto ranges and I'm thinking about standard ranges. A lot of the Z series primes under 200mm are 1.8s at best.

I suspect that Microsoft considers Windows Server the way it considers Office Professional: it's not something that consumers are ever supposed to have. Office 2021 was the first release of Office Pro 2013 that had a single user perpetual license SKU. 2016 and 2019 were not available to end...

To its credit, Canon also has a full line of pro lenses AND a decent range of long zooms and most of the stuff that's still on its roadmap are pretty niche. Sony doesn't really do long zooms and Nikon doesn't have much in the way of fast primes in Z mount, unless you really want a 50/1.2. Yes...

One tiny and weird hitch for using Server 2022: the trial version is considered a separate SKU from Standard Server or Datacenter. A valid product key for one of those doesn't work with the trial software. There's still a fix, which is to remove your existing trial key with a publicly-known...

The thing that gets sold in a Wal-Mart or Best Buy will sell 100x more than the $3000+ bodies that get paired with $2500 RF lenses. Those places only have the kit lenses and MAYBE the RF 50/1.8 as available options, too. I look at the low-cost options as improving the floor of what we see in...

You forgot Transmeta, Chewy, but I'm surprised you remembered Rise. I can't fully tell if the tech Transmeta developed actually went anywhere and was just licensed by every tech company under the sun, or if it just died on the vine, but apparently the company that held all its assets died in...

As a counterpoint, getting 20+ megapixels and fantastic contemporary lens designs mean that many, many people can be very well served with a relatively entry level camera, especially compared to crappy phone cameras. I'm sure that's the proper comparison point for the R100.

Gaming is not the only reason to want computer with expansion capability. It's not really useful for fleet systems, but for home users, there's a whole world of unknowns surrounding the needs of a user and there's a good argument for having places to plug in a drive or expansion card. We don't...

Apropos of nothing, does anyone else think that it's completely insane that premium desktop motherboards are selling for north of $500 these days, like $500 B550 boards? I think we all use different processing applications. Numbers for Adobe software may not have a meaningful correlation to DXO or Capture One. The only thing that's REALLY weird about it is the lack of a touchscreen. The touchscreen has been something that Canon absolutely nailed all along. It's incredibly friendly to new users like, hey, exactly the people who get $500 cameras. I'm glad to see a true low cost RF option at least.

The people who make this hardware work to shave fractions of a penny off the costs per unit, and it's not like GDDR6 or 7 is exactly cheap. Usually the XY00 AMD and X0Y0 nVidia card are approximately on par, up to about the x080 level on the nVidia side. AMD's high end usually doesn't reach the ridiculous high of whatever the x090 can do, but AMD's top end is also far cheaper. AMD sometimes adds some extra SKUs to fill in between...

AMD released the RX7600 today, which has an MSRP of $270. It keeps pace with the corridor of Arc 770 - 3060Ti but it only has 8GB RAM and doesn't have either Intel's driver support for content creation or nVidia's AI, but given that it's priced reasonably, it's at least worth consideration.

That system is kind of weird though. It doesn't support being an iSCSI target, so you'd be doing SMB or maybe NFS. That's definitely less than ideal for running VMs, and it's not like the local CPU could manage such a thing. All SSD media storage is cool from a bragging rights perspective...

From what I gathered, the reality is that Backblaze loses something like 1.5% of the drives it buys within three years. That's an astonishing level of overall reliability.
