    Need a Decent Phone

The Samsung A53 is coming. On paper it looks good, especially the longer OS and security update period. The camera group is all in one section, so they should be easy to defeat with a single foil sticker. It sucks not to have the headphone/microphone port, but that seems to be the cost...

    Home NAS

I was hoping NAS would get better, but the realty is that Synology has screwed over the consumers by making us buy only the "Synology" branded Toshiba drives at stupidly high prices, e.g., over $600 for 16TB. :( Meanwhile QNAP has gone overboard with all the extra (and useless) 2.5" bays, so a...

What happened to the AMD? They seemed to be hot stuff prior to the pandemic, but have nothing really new and better in a long time. Meanwhile Apples have the smoking fast ARm's and Intel has 12th gen bi-core CPUs.

FW 1.5.2 is out for the R5 and R6. Firmware Version 1.5.2 incorporates the following enhancement: 1. Enhances the stability of Eye Detection. 2. Enhances AutoFocus tracking when shooting moving subjects. Firmware Version 1.5.2 is for cameras with firmware up to Version 1.5.1. If the camera's...

    Mirrorless Cameras (MILC) and Lenses

You can get the M1 Ultra (20 CPU cores, 48 video cores) with 64GB RAM and 1TB SSD for $4000, 2TB SSD for $4400, or 4TB SSD for $5000. I think most people will find that adequate for several years. There are 6x Thunderbowls in the Ultra version. I don't know what can be done about the SSD(s)...

SSDs - State of the Product?

I suppose but somehow that won't help with current SSDs and might stunt the growth of future chipsets. Over 10 years ago I had 44 lanes IIRC.

Well, they changed it later to get more body counts. LOL The boom ended about 1958 when the economy tanked and people reduced the reporduction.

SSDs - State of the Product?

I'm leaving the 2x 4TB in the laptop and hope to use that in the summertime. I was hoping to also use it in the desktop when in the states, but the slower write speeds compared to the original 2x 2TB 970EVO+ is not worthwile. Computing its becoming very unpleasant and upsetting with the Win 11...

    Mirrorless Cameras (MILC) and Lenses

My understanding is that MACs are like modern cars or cellphones and you cannot do many upgrades with them except crush or trade in the product for a new model. Additionally that influences the consumer to buy the most heavily optioned (highest profit) models for fear that long term performance...

SSDs - State of the Product?

That's a big part of the problem with the mainstream boards that only have 16-24 lanes. Unfortunately the higher boards use the stupidly expensive CPUs with excessive cores that don't help most mainstream programs that need decent single-thread performance.

SSDs - State of the Product?

The RED SSDs are a bit strange. For no good reason the write performance is reduced in the x570 setup, but normal in the laptop.

SSDs - State of the Product?

Pretty much everything I want to do is becoming a thing of the past. I'd be fine with U.3, but don't expect to ever see it in a normal computer. M.2 is stupidly small for power/heat production. All the TLC 2280 SSDs >2TB have chipotle on the underside, which is even worse.

SSDs - State of the Product?

What are people using as USB-C enclosures for 2.5" SATA SSDs? My older USB 3.0 enclosures are dicsonnecting with the 4TB drives. I think it is a power issue because there are no errors when writing/reading the whole 4TB on a natural SATA port. :(

The older you get the less you want to do anything yourself. Ideally you will have money to pay people to do all that stuff. I never self moved, but in the late 80s and 90s when I was stationed all over the place I could only take about 70kg or risk leaving it behind.

DXO PL5 is good for some things, like the NR, but other corrections are not nearly as good as the Canon DPP DLO module. I'lll probably use it more with the Nikon bodies. It's also disappointing that so many lenses are missing DXO profiles.

Now we have Acapulco of ridiculous new lenses that Canon is producing instaed of updating the 500/4 to RF or making a 600 DO RF to replace the bag-busting RF version. The 100-500 is really nice, even compared to the 100-400 II.

    Windows 11

Most of the issue is using current software that will not be supported on 10 after a while. Soon 10 won't support new hardware either, just as MS dicated use of 10 after Q1 2017 new hardware. I can use current hardware for legacy programs that don't need high performance.

I also have the latest suite on Topaz, but am not so thrilled with it. Most of the tools have limited controls. For example the Gigapixel produces weird artifcats and oversharpens and Denoise is inferior to the DXO PL5, which does use the GPU. The Topaz tools use some GPU and some CPU, but...

I would be using it multiple times/places over 2-3 year lifetime, e.g., in a laptop part time, otherwise externally enclosed, and maybe even in a desktop for data. I'm wondering how that SN700 can be so cheap, yet still be TLC and have the DRAM. Mostly I want to know what the sustained write...

SSDs - State of the Product?

What are you all using for the 4TB NVMe in T&L laptops? I am considering the WD RED SN700 which is rather cheap. The TBW is very high for a TLC SSD. It's designated for NAS so maybe the FW is whack and no good for general uses?
