    Laptop time?

You can get a 15.6" HP ZBook laptop with Xeon W-11955M CPU, 128GB ECC DDR4 RAM, 4x 2TB NVme SSDs, RTX A5000 graphics, etc. if you have over $10K to spend. Are Thinkpads really a step above that?

    Laptop time?

If you don't like Windows, then why not get the new MAcBook Pro? The performance is far above what you can get in Intel/AMD at laptop power levels. I expected that you would want a higher power laptop for decent image processing performance. The smaller ones are less likely to offer good...

    Need a Decent Phone

Is this the one? It is rather huge and heavy, maybe too much to keep it in my pants. Is 6GB of RAM enough to last a few years or will the CPU be a limiting factor? I don't see any update policy. How can I discover the last OS that will be updated on the device?

    Need a Decent Phone

The last phone they supplied was a Blackenberry. :D Now we receive some bucks per month to spend on phone services. 85% of the people I see only have one phone, but a good one. The apps now are just awful with the permissions required. My "work" phone has hundreds of contacts I saved years...

    Need a Decent Phone

...but not very expensive. Does that exist in the 2021 era? My current phones were around $300 each, but one of them does not accept a newer OS, so the work-related apps just don't. :( Most of the reviews of the cheaper phones indicate that they are not so reliable or suffer some critical...

    mATX Rebuild

You are correct! I was able to use a brand new Win 7 Pro OEM disc w/sticker that I had in storage to activate 10 Pro on the 5700G. I have another one left to use for the 6700K. I will leave the TPM off to prevent Windows 11 for now. The little 5700G is a pretty good CPU and the Wrath of...

    mATX Rebuild

My work laptop has only 16GB of RAM, so I think that is enough. I'm going to finish the Ryzen G build and then ship it for use until the Xmas break. Then I will rebuild the 6700K with 10 pro and swap cases Can I use the code from a legit DSP DVD to activate Win 10 that was installed from a...

    mATX Rebuild

IIRC at the time the 200 series chipset arrived it and the 7700K were designed for 10. I'm sure it does need an update as the user would never do it and the system was assembled in Q3 2017. I may have avoided the BIOS update due to the Meltdown "virus."

    Windows 11

I expect that most of the "badness" in Win 11 will get into Win 10 through updates. MS may remove the TPM requirement later since it is mainly artificial, but they won't do it soon. The two concerns I had with 10 from the beginning are that 1) a change may render my critical older programs...

    Windows 11

So I D/L and installed 11 clean and the GUI sucks. The scaling is borked so everything is blurry. Many items are no longer easily accessible. It's like they are trying to make it more difficult to do simple things. I'm sure there are workarounds, but it's not close to being worthwhile...

    Windows 11

Windows drivers for a 4-color SOHO printer might be OK, but not a photo printer. For example I noticed that Epson claims the drivers for the SC P7000/P9000 claim support for 11. Whether it will actually work I have no idea. I suffered with the inability to properly scan on some older devices...

    mATX Rebuild

Thanks. My concern was about the ATX spec number, since I don't see anything in the mainboard manual about a minimal ATX number level. I also found a Seasonics ss700HM, which has very little info. It is in a case with a Z97 (Devil Canyon 4790K) and probably not new back in early 2015, but I'm...

As usual the Corvid has messed up plans. All must be same supplier and delivery in a time window for the user, so the amd will be used instead. I hope not to have wasted too much of your time. She should be ok with 5700G, B550M Mortuary, 32GB crucial 3200 RAM, 10 Pro. According to the...

    mATX Rebuild

I must this week. I hope it does work in the BIoS but was confused about the TPM header and modulus that is not available. What are your thoughts on the cooler? The case is small so I doubt it would handle more than a Nocturne 9 series (92mm fan), but some reviews are not so good. It seems...

The Gigabyte W480M seems nice with the dual LAN (one 2.5GbE) and four slots. Presumably it is built fairly well. OC is not necessary. The only concern is that there is nothing about Windows 11 compatibility.

The constituent storage parts are 2x fixed SATA HDD, one optical, two removable drives in a combo 2.5/3.5 bay w/ power switch and one NVMe OS drive. It is necessarily to power down the drives and replace with other drives without Windows going whack. It is also necessary to have the 10Gbe SFP+...

    mATX Rebuild

I built a system about 4 years ago with a 6700K on a Z270 micro board with 16GB of RAM and a 250GB Samsung 960. The user was adamant about keeping the Windows 7, which I painfully migrated from an older computer. Now Windows 7 is obsolete and I'm thinking about the upgrade plan. There are...

    Windows 11

I missed the removal of Help in some old 32-bit programs that otherwise run fine from XP to 7. A lot of software requires 10 or at least 8.1. It will only get worse when 11 is out. IIRC Intel 6th gen and 200 series chipset was the last to run Win 7 naturally, without hacking on the drivers, etc. Are you happy with using old hardware with 7 forever?

The 486 DX-50 was not rare as far as I recall. There was a small room full of them at one site in the early 90s. Heavy lifting was done by a couple of Alpha (DEC) systems that the likes of me were not allowed to touch. I had to use a 386. Nobody in MIS would buy any x86 systems that were not...

That's rather a tautology. :p I am totally naive to video cards of significant power, since I never cared for video games. This 3060 TL is the first that has a power input. Now normal software makes use of the video cards, somehow. I tried several benchmarks listed above, including OCCT, the...

I don't know how large you print or whatever else you do with the output. 21MP was great back in 2007, but I don't want anything less than 30MP since 2016. The original R had the right MP, but everything else was too low grade and the first round of the technology. The issue with the R3 is...

That would be me. I have a late 2018 Moto 5+ and it works fine at a third or less the price of the iPhones. The Moto's Andorids are no longer active so I don't know how long the OS will hold up to app updaters. The battery is at 95% of 5Ah. I charge it to NMT 80% when possible to preserve...
