I was wondering how this would affect data retention in a powered off state.

I just ordered 18 of the Hitachi 5K3000 [3TB] drives mentioned in the BackBlaze blurb. I went with the Hitachi because I got them for $235.00 each.

The Zotac I have [ a ZBox nano ] has an AMD E-350 dual core cpu in it. Not an i7, but better than the VIA.

I haven't bought any SAS drives. All the drives I have used in the last two years have been WD RE4 enterprise drives. Right now they are pricey and in short supply.

Why not start with a Zotac. Add an SSD and some memory and your ready to go. I have one on my desk with a Crucial M4 and 2GB of memory. Silent! Less than $500.00

I wasn't comparing the SCSI drives to the desktop drives. I was just making the point that Seagate does make some good drives.

There are free versions of Acronis available depending on what brand drive you are using.

I must say that the Seagate 'enterprise' drives the SCSI Cheetah [ 15K RPM, 18GB ] were excelent drives. In 2003 I installed 36 of the drives. In October of last year I retired the last two. Although they all ran 24/7/365, none of them failed. Broke my heart to send them to the recycler. :(

I've had more Seagates fail than WD. I'd go with WD

I got the same kind of idiot response from Supermicro. I did manage to get 3 boards repaired with the help of my vender. Those boards are now relegated to wiping hard drives with Partition Wizard.

Why not use CentOS. It installs with a GUI and during the install you can configure it as a web server. It's also free.

If I remember correctly from the Win 7 Beta, XP and Win 7 system restore are not compatable with each other. Win 7 will erase XP's files and start it's own. I am presently trying out EaseUS free version. It will recover to dissimilar hard ware and has a setting to install your backup to a SSD...

The free version does not work on server; which the second partion is. Maybe I'll try an XP/Win7 dual boot.

I just realized that the dual boot menu was copied and works, but the server partition is missing. Damn.

I found this software for making backups. It will restore to dissimilar hardware too. And it's free. I tested by moving a dual boot Win7/Server 2008 install from a Supermicro C2BC-Q to an Intel D915GEV motherboard. Works! Of course there are no drivers for Win 7 on that old board, but it does...

Try flashing the BIOS. Even if it is up to date, a refresh might solve your problem.

You said your RAID array failed. Is the RAID controller on the motherboard?

I noticed Win 8 has a pagefile and a swapfile.??? And no hiberfil.sys file for hibernation.

We still have equipment and diagnostic programs running on DOS 6.2. We have a few computers running W98 because the software was never upgraded. And one lonesome 1998 vintage Gateway running Windows 2000. Moving to Windows 7 has been painful. Windows 8 is out of the question.

It's the only low profile, 12 disc RAID card I found. I wanted to install it in a 2U rack mount.

Anybody have any experiance with these RAID controllers? Good? Bad? Junk?
