Guess I was not clear. I like the form factor for my box. Fits under my desk. Plenty of cooling, and the heat keeps the cat happy. I didn't really plan on it, but, the Vizio 37" HST makes me want to build a faster cpu box that has more head room then my current system. Supermicro has some...

Hi Getting the bug. What motherboard would you suggest, considering I have a PCI-X raid card, actually two, and a scsi box I like for storage, and, what OS do you use, XP Pro? I didn't think it would support 4 cores, and 4 more virtual cores? Also, do these numbers reflect actual speed results...

    iPod>iPhone>iPad

Perhaps that should read: Maxipad? The Mac is now based on the COOL scale. As long as the Mac loyalists believe, and buy, Apple will sell computers. This thing just looks like a big iPhone, for 500 bucks, and, it's sort of an expensive, slow, Netbook? Nothing new. If it looks cool, it is...

Televisions as monitors: What are you using, and why?

One HUGE plus is I finally have a screen I can read the entire history of National Geographic on. Would someone explain the logic of having a swapfile on the same disk setup? Do you NEED a different partition for the swapfile? Sorry I missed the motherboard/form factor issue. My bad. Turned out to be a great thread on Linux distros, and history.

WOW! I feel your pain. Ubuntu has installed on a couple laptops, and been useable. That said, I REALLY wonder why you don't go with a hardware raid card? I'm pretty sure the card I paid 75 bucks for, 9500, IIRC, 8 ports, would do in about 5 minutes what you are trying to do, but, I'm not sure...

SSDs - State of the Product?

Figured out the DVD and some Bluray problems with the ATI 4670, and PowerDVD 9 Ultra. With newer movies, hardware decoding works great. With older Bluray, some of them anyway, and regular DVD's, you have to use software decoding on this machine. Strange, but that single setting is what was...

SSDs - State of the Product?

Not for most of my useage. I may get spikes in the first couple cores to 60%, but, they go back down below 50% quickly. I was just testing a Bluray disk, and the processors spiked to about 80% briefly, then settled down to about 20-40% while the DVD was playing.

SSDs - State of the Product?

Except for that one program, even playing DVD's, or Bluray run at around 40%, and thats pretty much all of them. I'll do a bit more cpu watching, but, most of my tasks just don't stress the Xeons.

SSDs - State of the Product?

I know the system bus is about 1200 MB/sec, vs. David's which is around 3500 MB/SEC IIRC from the Ram disk tests. Still don't really get much over 50% of processor useage, maybe a 60% spike opening programs now. Only one program I run takes nearly all the processor power.

I guess I can justify the Samsung 21.5" monitors being 175.-270 dollars, only because they are a life warranty at Costco. SSDs - State of the Product?

Sechs mentioned in one of his posts that coming from a fast scsi system the difference is not as much as people have been lead to believe. I sort of second that. Depending on your drive choice, and controller, you could get a system that was equal, or slower. I can do that. Just plug the two...

    PCI-X SATA 2.0 Raid controller?

It's kind of odd that programs that take a lot of time, NOD 32 for example, even at Realtime, use about 10% of the processors, and, the read on C drive was NOT fast. Overall it's faster, but, I just don't see that much speed increase, except in a few, very specific areas.
