Mercutio's Term as a moderator is at an end

See what I mean? You are too old, too slow. We need youth and vitality and optimisim around here. Blakewry is da man. Look Tannin, why don't you just go to bed and I'll bring you a nice glass of warm milk. OK?

What I did on my holidays

This fellow, a Common Brushtail Possum, is not in the slightest endangered. Indeed, they are bordering on being a pest in urban areas, and in New Zealand (where they were introduced about 150 years ago) they are seriously nasty vermin that has been responsible for untold amounts of damage to the...

What I did on my holidays

It's not all about Regent Honeyeaters, there are lots of species that are in trouble. One of them is the Grey-crowned Babbler. Babblers are very social birds that live in family groups of between 4 and about 15 birds. They move about together, feeding and building nests (not just for laying...

What I did on my holidays

Well, I could tell you all where Tannin and I have been hiding these last few days, but seeing as Tannin already wrote this this time last year, I could just bump this thread instead. And, maybe, post a picture or two of the creatures we are doing it for. Hang on a tic, I'll see what I can drag...

[NEWS] - Western Digital to introduce 72GB Raptor.

I could be very tempted. I'd like a faster storage drive (to sit alongside the 18GB X15) but 36GB is too small. What I'd really like is a 180GB X15. sigh

    OS/2 - I need to get warped.

The cost would be very small, Coug, and it would be my pleasure to ship it to you. But first I have to dig Tannin out and make him look high and low for it. There are bound to be spare ones around - we were an IBM OEM and used to buy 20-pack cartons of Warp 4 to sell with new systems - but that...

    Cases with SATA power connectors?

We sell the Seagates sometimes, when people particularly ask for SATA. Can't see the point myself: they are lots dearer and offer no discernable practical advantage. And there are disadvantages: if you use the SATA connector for one drive (at least on the board I was playing with the other day)...

Data Recovery from "dead" Laptop HD (IBM DJSA-220)

Not worth a box, Blakewry. Just throw away the computer every 5 years. They have done some work to improve the atmosphere in the room, however. Apart from anything else, people have to work in there. And the tape seal, Buck, is doing just fine. The aluminium drive casing is pitted and dulled...

Strange thing is, they (my customers) have just spent $200 to buy this clapped-out notebook a new battery, $1500-odd for the data recovery, and $200-odd for a new hard drive, all without a murmer. But they are balking at the idea of spending $2500 for a new notebook (which happens to have a CD...

Look out! Tea & Dell = Hell!

Perzacaly! Next time I meet Michael Dell, I'll probably take his feet off. Somewhere in the shed, Tannin has a thing rather like the Heavy Duty Precision Impact Adjustment Tool, only one side looks different - sort of sharp and flat, if you know what I mean. I always wondered what that was for.

I think you will find that it is expensive, SD. Very expensve. We just sent a ustomer's laptop drive to a data recovery firm and it cost roughly $1200 (about $550 US). And the problem was not too severe. No click-click. No point in telling you who, they are in Oz.

    Antique SCSI transfer modes

I see no reason why it shouldn't work, I. 9GB of decent SCSI drive still performs very well, even on an old controller. It will almost certainly give you better seek times than a brand new IDE drive will. And the transfer rate makes surprisingly little difference to most jobs,

Actually they aren't "Tasmanian Tigers" or Victorian Tigers. They are Thylacines. Or were Thylacines, I should say. There is not the slightest doubt that they are extinct. They just couldn't cope with introduced competitors.
