Televisions as monitors: What are you using, and why?

thank you, ST and LM. Just really started crying last night. Grief is not fun. Triggered by watching an old episode of Magnum, about his grandfather dieing, and, the problems he has with his new stepfather. Almost EXACTLY the same problems I'm facing.

No memory errors. Must be a software conflict I haven't been able to figure out. Burning Rom works fine, it's just showtime that doesn't. Don't really need it. I bought a Plextor external Bluray player, with PowerDVD for playing Bluray on this machine. The drive got good reviews, and, it's...

Going through the same thing. Besides my mother passing at 10:30 Monday, The Mercedes 89 died next to the Mercedes dealership. It's a rather nice, 300E that was abused by my girlfriend, but, has relatively low miles. First mechanic said the compression was shot. Second has spent 120 in...

Televisions as monitors: What are you using, and why?

Work I'm about 4 feet away when typing. Watching stuff, 5-7 feet. The keyboard pulls out of my desk, 13" Desk is 26" from TV to edge of desk. Oddly, it still looks better with my computer glasses on. I seem to loose part of the 3D aspects if I take them off, which bothers me... MacGillvery...

Televisions as monitors: What are you using, and why?

The depth, and 3D that this screen brings out, and shows, is really incredible. It's a VERY different experience from using the 21" Samsungs to watch movies. It's very BRIGHT and white, have to turn the backlight down from 85 to 25, but, that's very easy to do with the remote.

Weird. The tax was, IIRC, 16 dollars on 629? It was near twice that on a 250 dollar monitor. VERY strange, as is this state....Plus, nearly 9%, or more, in state sales tax, so that's what, nearly 20% in tax? I can always return it in 3 months, and get all my money back, and get the Hell out...

What I've found so far is there are just a couple that use a 10 bit screen and processor, and, they aren't cheap. Sony Bravia comes to mind, and the Vizio Extreme 40" are the two I have to choose from... Been thinking about that or two Vertex Turbos or more vertex turbos...

SSDs - State of the Product?

Pradeep: Looks like 2-4 drives is it for me on that card. 300-700 mb/sec, plus access time reduction should be noticeable. That would be a 100% increase from my current setup, if only on the low end.

My thanks. Didn't know MPC classic had a new version. I've found DVD 6 to have better picture quality then 8, and Nero 9 better then VLC, or MPC. That said, VPC works on stuff that most of the others don't.

BEST VALUE OF DRIVES TO HIT 1200 MB/SEC If you had a 3ware card with 16 channels, and a bus max of around 1500 mb/sec, what combination of SSDs would you use, and, if you have them used, do you want to sell them cheap to a retired teacher?????

OK; Thanks. So far, I took my old video card, and HDMI cable, installed it in my friends' computer, and hooked it up to a relative cheap Emerson 32" 720 60 mhz TV. Seems to play pretty darn well, and, with a DVD out put from the computer, looks VERY good. So, a few more questions. Which...

The last thread was about a 28" monitor they offer, lower quality but good reviews, for 300 dollars. I've been looking at the TV's, and, they have better picture quality, and a better price point. Also, they appear to have better quality control then the monitors. I have two 21.5" monitors...

Hi I'm looking at moving up to a TV as my main monitor from the 2233 Samsung. I'm finding the 32" TV's are much bigger then the monitors, appear to be better quality, and Costco has em. Is 37 or 40" too much for a desktop? Thanks GS

SAS: CARDS, ETC. WORTH THE MONEY?

DAVID? I notice a BIG difference in access time, due to the added processor and cache, both the 128 mb on the raid card, and, perhaps, the doubling of the cache on the drives. I don't notice any increase over two drives in access time, in fact, it seems a bit slower the times I've done it...

SSDs - State of the Product?

From ram disk testing, my system is maxed at 1200 mb/sec. David's at 3500 mb/sec, IIRC. The 3 Ware Raid card has done 800 mb/sec, in the 133 PCI-X slot, with 8 7200 SATA drives in one of the tests. I think at these speeds, and access times, to really notice a difference, you need to at least...

Reminds me of the mac guy I sold all my SCSI mac stuff to, and, all my mac hardware. He got it for pennies on the dollar, and was delighted. I'm sure it was far faster then anything he had ever had, so Sechs' rejects might be someone else's jewels.

SSDs - State of the Product?

IIRC, 4k is the default NTFS block size, so yes, it's important. As long as Intel has pretty much a monopoly on drives, we can look back in history to see what kind of pricing they do. That said, what concerns me was the 94-95 ram price crashing. I remember buying 32 mb of memory for a 540C...

SAS: CARDS, ETC. WORTH THE MONEY?

David, your preaching to the choir. I've always maintained access time was very important, and, that's why I've always used 15k drives when possible, or practical. SAS: CARDS, ETC. WORTH THE MONEY?

Yes, I have done that. I just cleared a drive to use for torrents. Your right about PCI-X, and there are about two cards for it, 3ware 8 and 16 ports, ranging used about 100 bucks to 400 new. That would certainly make one consider a new motherboard, or a single drive with a SATA 3 card. Odd...

Sorry you took my remarks personally. Not intended that way. I took your advice on the Seagate, and, for the same reasons, it's at 97% formatted right now. I'm using it in a Granite Digital removeable drive setup. The price to gigabyte ratio was too good. As for the packaging: It came inside...

SAS: CARDS, ETC. WORTH THE MONEY?

Another good point would be that you can connect a SSD to a SATA controller as well as to a SAS controller. David, you've already made the point that the current SATA controllers take advantage of the cpu/memory on the motherboard. Not sure how that works, but, that would be an advantage to SATA.

Thank you Timwhit, Stereodude, Fushigi for replies on the subject.
