On which motherboard platform? And which new CPUs? The 3960X and 3970X require a new chipset, so any motherboard for them will support them out of the box. Things on the desktop Ryzen 3xxx is a little less clear depending on which chipset you're try to drop them in. I'm not sure if the Ryzen...

    Lots of Snow

I put the Pilot Alpine 4's on the S4 today. I skipped them last year and just used the Conti DWS's. I thought the DWS's were noticeably inferior from how I remembered the car driving on the PA4's. We'll see if the PA4's live up to what I remember from 2 winters ago.

The 3950X barely generates any more heat than the 3900X and both are well under Intel's offerings. You can air cool them if you want if you're using a top tier air cooler. If I go 3950X I will be air cooling it. The best air coolers outperform the AIO water coolers anyhow.

So I ordered a black Sony NW-A55 on eBay for $185 + 10% ($18.50) back in eBay Bucks from a seller in Hong Kong Tuesday night since Sony never saw fit to bring it to the US in the past year it's been out in Asia. It arrived via FedEx this morning. That's a pretty quick turnaround for free...

As expected AMD clobbers Intel on the power consumption under load. From: https://www.legitreviews.com/amd-ryzen-9-3950x-processor-review_215425/8 The Ryzen 9 3950X uses less power under load than an Intel Intel Core i9-9900KS or Intel Core i9-9900K while pretty much doubling their...

    Skylum Luminar 4

So as I mentioned in the Something Random thread I bought Luminar 4 from B&H to play around with. So far I'm pretty impressed with it. It is certainly easier to use than Photoshop in addition to have more dramatic effects. For example if you want to green up tree/foliage in PS you have to do...

    Something Random

It isn't correcting the lens distortion in the same way as the Sony RAW converter or the camera is. It looks like it's applying less correction. I haven't shot a picture of a grid to see how badly it's underdoing it. Well, now that this has grown probably, but I was just replying where the...

    Something Random

I never used any prior version. I'm starting from scratch. The auto distortion correction is turned off by default for RAW files which took me a while to find just poking around. All in all, I'm really impressed with it so far in the few minutes I've been playing. It seems sort of like...

And I was wrong. I got an e-mail with a download link and a product key for a 2.8MB installer that I presume downloads the actual software (which says it needs 2.37GB of drive space). When I get home I will install it on my desktop.

    Something Random

Well, I don't have it quite yet. It's a download for Skylum Luminar 4, which isn't released until 11/18 (which I knew before buying, but isn't mentioned anywhere on the B&H listing for it). For whatever reason B&H offered it to me for $49 in the e-mail after a $40 off promo code. Regular...

    Ryzen

Except it's dependent on the silicon itself, cooling, and other factors. I guess you'd be happier if they got rid of the "turbo"/boost frequencies and it ran slower, but at a defined speed.
  33. S

    Ryzen

That's not what it means. It means you're guaranteed at least 3.5gHz with all cores loaded. That doesn't mean it won't run faster than 3.5gHz with all cores loaded.

    Ryzen

It seems something like a 14C/28T Intel Core i9-9990XE (pulling 300W+) that trades blows in benchmark with AMD's 12C/24T Ryzen 9 3900X (pulling 142W) is more what they're after. But sure, complain about the 280W TDP of the 3960X & 3970X which will very likely lay waste to Intel CPUs like the...

    Ryzen

Those wouldn't be my first recommendation to someone worried about power consumption or efficiency.
  38. S

    Ryzen

And again, they're more power efficient than Intel. They still use less power than the comparable Intel part and they get more done. But keep worrying about the "scary" TDP numbers while Intel sells you an inferior performing part that actually uses even more power.

    Tele conferencing

We've switched from GoTo Meeting to Google Hangouts at work. GoTo worked better, but the latter is free AFAIK.
  40. S

    Ryzen

Well, they are more efficient than Intel. Their TDP ratings are also more honest. So a comparable HEDT Intel solution will use even more power under load and have worse performance. So you should be used to it.
  41. S

    Ryzen

Who cares? Your power company will sell you the extra power you "need". Additionally, I still don't know why so you're hung up on PCIe lanes that you seem to have no need for.

    question Glasses

The reordered Oakley lenses were available for pickup the day before I left on my trip. I picked them up that evening. They seen to be made correctly. The left eye is sharp this time. I've used them outside in the sun for a few fairly long stints on this trip so far. I'm pretty happy with them.

There were slight differences. They're reordering the lenses based on the new numbers. It seems like their process has lots of chances for mistakes to be made. question Glasses

So, I'm not very happy with the prescription Oakley sunglasses. I'm certain that at least one, if not both, of the lenses are not made correctly. I went back on Saturday night with my initial complaint after driving with them some and biking with them earlier in the day. Basically my...
