OK, then enlighten me as to Intel's competition for a 180GB unit.
The Newegg link represents a good price. I can go as high as $150, if necessary. A 5 year parts & labor warranty is excellent in this day and age.
I've finally come to the decision that my almost 5 year old desktop needs some TLC. I'm ready to pull the trigger on an Intel, and only Intel, SSD. I'm thinking of the 180GB size as a happy medium between 120GB and 240GB. My plan is to install Win 7 Ultimate 64 bit on the SSD and build it up...
No anti-AVG conspiracy, huh? OK, then how about I call it an "anti-AV program conspiracy", instead? I found NOD32 on CNET, so I'll read the review as I did on AVG FREE 2014. I based my decision to use AVG on both the CNET Editors' review and the Publisher's description, although both may be...
No, I haven't contacted AVG technical support, because when I contact most companies that provide a service or product and I make a complaint, the first thing they do is "attempt" to blame it on some other component in the system. But since I'm not making any progress here on the forum, I'll...
To repeat what I wrote in my last post, which is valid as a response to your post, I never check emails or do a scan without first checking for virus definitions and program file updates. This is the very least I can do to make sure AVG has the latest information to keep me safe. Of course...
Since the only theme I hear from you regarding why NOT to use AVG is it's excessive use of memory, and I'm fine with this because I don't open many applications at the same time, I'm going to depend on it for it's great track record as an antivirus program. I will download and install Spybot...
Many a pc user has told me that any antivirus program slows down a pc. I tried all those you mentioned. Although a virus never had a chance to deliver it's dastardly payload, the programs you mentioned allowed spyware / malware to infiltrate my pcs with their annoying false warnings about...
This is more of an inconvenience than a problem.....
I'm using the antivirus program AVG FREE 2014 with great success on my two laptops and desktop, all Windows 7 based pcs. I find that when I start a scan and I Archive All to add to the activity log, the start time column has an entry but the...
As a result of this post by Chewy509..... http://www.storageforum.net/forum/showthread.php/10123-What-are-the-pros-and-cons-of-enabling-the-fan-speed-control-function-in-BIOS-setup?p=177131&viewfull=1#post177131 I enabled the ASUS Q-Fan Control function from it's previously disabled status...
Well guys, I think my freezes are gone for good. The BIOS update allowed me to enable the Q-Fan Control function build into my ASUS MB. I can choose any of the three fan speeds with confidence. I chose the Silent speed for the reduced rpms, and I still feel cool air leaving the exhaust outlet...
Your "testimony' was favorable to me, because it doesn't look like I'll be swapping MBs anyway. My desktop is purring along. Considering the MB's age I'll never have any use for it, because I certainly won't be going back in time with the CPU, memory and OS to make it work. It's so sad that I...
I'm aware that according to the FSB numbers, there is a mismatch. Should I attempt an MB swap at all considering what you've written about the loss of performance, even if you're wrong about the 30% of loss and CougTek is correct about the 3-4% of loss? This level of technical conversation is...
I saw that chart, but it doesn't list Core 2 Duo CPUs. If you click on Compatibility Tool in the rectangular box above the chart, you'll get this..... http://processormatch.intel.com/CompDB/SearchResult.aspx?Boardname=d946gzis which is the top link in my post. Note that the highest number CPU...
I have an Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 "Wolfdale" LGA775 configuration CPU.
I have an Intel D946GZIS motherboard with an LGA775 configuration socket.
I did some research on the Intel website regarding compatibility, and here is what I found in the way of Compatibility Charts...
Status report on my freezes. They've stopped!
I remember when I got the freezes the first time starting in Dec. 2011, I called the MB manufacturer ASUS and spoke to a tech, support rep. He walked me through every pull down and setting in BIOS Setup, advising me to disable the Q-Fan Control...
Yes, some avid pc users are intolerant of noise levels as high as 1 millionth of a decibel ( dbA ), and they'll do anything and spend any amount of money to eliminate as much noise as possible. However, I'm fortunate in that I don't mind a little fan and HDD noise. It shows "character." But...
I've come to the conclusion that my freezes have ended. I attribute this joyful event to the disabling of the Q-Fan Control function in BIOS Setup on Tue. Nov. 26th.
Chewy509, I thank you for convincing me that there is a BIOS update on the ASUS website that somewhat addresses the Q-Fan...
Thanks for the ACPI definition, and for the ASUS link to the downloads page which I've seen before. I see a few BIOS updates that fixed problems that may be similar to mine, although not exact. Since I haven't had a freeze in 68 hours, I'm thinking that a BIOS update will not be necessary if I...
I've never updated the BIOS. It's the original version from the MB manufacturer. As you know, it's risky initiating a BIOS update because of the uncertainty of a freeze. If a freeze occurs while I'm updating it, my pc will be rendered "null and void."
I'm not sure what is the difference...
This makes sense. Each of the two cores of my CPU is usually 40 degrees C, if I can believe the program Real Temp 3.70. There's plenty of air flow, with 1 front panel and 1 bottom panel intake fan, and 1 back panel exhaust fan. The Corsair PS also has a fan.
I should have been more specific...
You're correct, the slight difference in noise between Silent and Turbo doesn't bother me. But the difficulty of vacuuming microdust from every nook and granny every month or so bothers me more. So I'll be proceeding with the Silent fan speed, if I keep the function enabled.
This would...
For many years, I've Enabled the CPU and case fans speed control function in BIOS setup. What are the pros and cons of doing this on the stability of a desktop pc? Would disabling this feature be beneficial on any level? If I keep it Enabled, should I choose Silent, Standard or Turbo as the...
I forgot to mention that I get so angry when Yahoo makes changes to their mail service, and doesn't give us the chance to keep the old, functional and user friendly version. I wish I could return to Yahoo Mail Classic. When somebody offers something for FREE, it's never entirely for FREE...
I found out these things about the FREE Yahoo account, when I tried to create a Yahoo account in Thunderbird and found no pop and smtp addresses to enter.
Holy moly, man. I thought I was messed up with OCD, but you're even more messy! Compulsive Disorder Obsessive is a serious condition. People like you can be seen walking the streets aimlessly all day long, reciting our 26 letter alphabet. Be good, Howell.
I like the way you think. There have been times when I took a peek at the spam emails, only to find emails that might interest me. I do one better than you regarding manual deletes. I do this everyday.....100 times a day if necessary. For an OCD victim such as myself, this will NEVER be a...
I'm having a psychological problem dealing with this issue. I can't help believing that a FREE email account should remain FREE.
What makes this issue less stressful is that my Yahoo account is a secondary account. The number of emails I get considered SPAM is 99.00% of the total emails I...
It appears that Yahoo Mail is trying to make us miserable with their spam feature.. They refuse to offer subscribers the option of immediately emptying the contents of the spam folder. The choices are "Once a week", "Every two weeks" or "Once a month." Other email providers like Verizon's...
Thank you Sir. You nailed it. In the laptops, both boxes were unchecked. In the desktop, both boxes were checked. The title for the OS in each pc is "Windows 7", the basic OS name.
Mercutio,
Sadly, after I swapped a new PS for my original PS on the morning of Thu. Nov. 21st, I got four freezes as of tonight Fri. Nov. 22nd. It appears that I'll being accepting your most gracious offer to donate one of your spare Gigabyte ATX MBs to my cause. The pc is stable, otherwise...
I find this weird. With each of my laptops, the way I specify the boot devices sequence in BIOS Setup is followed without me having to bring up the Boot Selection Popup Menu page via F8 during a boot. With the desktop pc, the same sequence in BIOS Setup requires me to...
Thank you for your continued consideration, man!
You may be happy to know that I just completed the PS swap, with no difficulties whatsoever. I haven't made the inside of the case look "pretty" with consolidation of cables, etc., because I'll be sitting on pins and needles for a short time...
Mercutio,
I made an error in my last post. The correct sentence should be "It makes no sense having you send me a MB, when I'm not sure that the PS isn't the problem." Obviously I have PS on my mind at this point. Sorry for the confusion.
After I worked on my PS's connector two days ago, hoping that this procedure would stop the freezes, 22 hours passed and I got a freeze. This was a disappointment being it's been a long time that a freeze took this long following a previous one. Then I got a second freeze 10 hours later, still...
Thank you. My MB is of the LGA775 configuration. You're a most generous humanitarian. I'm in the process of writing you an elaborate private message, in which I'll list my system's components in an effort to determine compatibility with your MB.
Good possible scenario. But.....I didn't remove the DIMMS from the original sockets until March 2012, and it was this action that stopped the freezes for 14 months. I didn't unseat / reseat the PS connector until the morning of Nov. 19th.
If you mean, did it appear that the PS connector was not properly seated within the MB's connector before I removed it, the answer is NO. Everything looked fine. This is the first time the connector was removed since the desktop was built in Apr. 2009. Sometimes impurities in our environment...
I'll look at the BIOS for it. I have a Fluke 177 DMM, and can check the two line voltages.
I surely recall your gut "speaking volumes", when I had the freezes spanning from Dec. 2011 to Mar. 2012. I'd agree that if DIMM sockets 0 and 2 failed, forcing me to relocate the DIMMs to sockets 1 and...
JTR didn't have me check anything on the motherboard. I usually unseat / reseat connectors within my reach, as my preventive medicine routine. JTR thinks that something related to the power supply is causing the freezes. The connection between the power supply and the motherboard may be the...
You happen to be way ahead of me with your good wish for my success.
I bought the power supply as planned, but didn't install it.....yet. The reason is that I've been getting ready for the swap by removing the current connector from the mother board, and after three attempts I succeeded...
P5 and Bozo,
Sorry for the delay in a reply. I've been working with JTR1962 via email, to find out if my freezes are the result of failing hardware or a software conflict. Like most of you, he believes it's hardware. So to eliminate software from the scenario, he linked me to an Ubuntu site...
I knew that your motive was "honorable." Seriously, does anybody retain restore points for as long a 6 months, and why would they do so unless there is absolutely no chance that any hardware or software will be updated during this period of time? I think that this scenario is IMPOSSIBLE...
I create at least two restore points every single day, since they've saved me from certain "pc death' countless times. Are you suggesting that I use an old restore point after each freeze? The freezes have resumed as of May 2013, and I don't retain the points for more than about two weeks...
Merc, old buddy, old pal, old chum,
Are you recommending a Western Digital diagnostic tool to me? Haa haa! One thing I can tell you about all three of my HDDs. Neither chkdsk nor HD Tune have detected bad sectors. I know there's much more to an HDD than bad sectors, though. But if you tell...
