    Post Counts Piling Up

Congratulations Tannin & mubs. You guys have made a lot of great contributions in the time that I've lurked and been registered here. Your part of the reason that this place is head and shoulders above the rest of the internet.

    Linux, Wine and the Gnome

I don't know how familiar with Unix you are Buck, so forgive me if you already know the following. The directory is probably hidden. Any file (or directory) in a unix filesystem that starts with a . is hidden. You can select View/'Show Hidden ..' in Nautilus somewhere. The -a option tells...

    Intels Core CPU

I checked that out as well today. Real World Tech always does excellent technical CPU articles. I'm also looking forward to John Stokes writeup on ArsTechnica, which is apparently forthcoming.

I'd just like to add my congratulations Cougtek. Terrific news. Enjoy your good fortune :).

Berkeley pulled out all the stops to beat USC apparently. This is one of the most hilarious things I've ever heard. You gotta feel sorry for the guy though. Details.

Intel's new microarchitecture: Merom, Conroe, Woodcrest

Current LGA775 boards are supposed to support Conroe with only a BIOS update. I think it goes without saying of course that "support available with a BIOS update" is one of the most abused phrases in personal computer history.

    SuSE goes free

So far I've been using vobcopy, a command line DVD ripper. I just create a decssed mirror of the CD on the hard drive. Command line tools are nice because they let me simply shove the disc in a fileserver, ssh in, fire & forget. I typically avoid burdening my desktop with IO tasks. I...

    Pandora - Music Genome Project

Quick thoughts: Pandora++, 1. They have a tremendous selection of less common music. 2. They're pretty damn good in terms of getting related sound out of their recommendations. Last.fm++, 1. Tracks my listening habits on my home collection using a plugin for Amarok. 2. Also pretty damn accurate.

    Pandora - Music Genome Project

I've heard of Pandora, and it's definitely worth checking out. I don't have as much experience with it as I do with it's biggest competition, Last.fm, which is one of those Web 2.0, social services that everyone seems to think is going to save the world (regular reading of Nicholas Carr's blog...

    SuSE goes free

Absolutely. I've been thinking quite seriously about installing SuSE as the main OS on my laptop. And DVD support is indeed one of those annoying things that no one can conveniently get around thanks to the politicians, the lawyers, the DMCA, and the entertainment industry lobby --may they all...

It's official : Windows boots on a Macbook Pro!

They pretty much were waiting for Conroe, for the big boys, the Power Macs. Their laptops and the Mini had always used G4's (32-bit PowerPC chips) so 32-bit wasn't a step back at all like it would have been for the Power Macs. 64-bit is also really only useful for its expanded memory...

    SuSE goes free

Ironically, Gentoo may be one of the few Free distributions that supports DVD playback auto-magically. P.S. I don't mean to be a crusader or anything, but if you have the time, don't forget to write a letter to your Senator/politician. The whole situation is ridiculous. Not in Canada, but in...

Intel's new microarchitecture: Merom, Conroe, Woodcrest

Of course, it all depends on prices. Even when Intel has had the performance lead, AMD has always been the better buy at any given price point. If Intel's performance advantage is indeed this significant then their chips will definitely at least be solid contenders on my price/performance...

Intel's new microarchitecture: Merom, Conroe, Woodcrest

Bozo, Conroe takes many design lessons from the Pentium M, but it is an entirely different microarchitecture. It has a different pipeline, frontend, execution resources, and implements all sorts of new tricks that haven't shown up in any Pentium M derivative. In general, I think it is still...

Even 500W ain't enough for SLI.

The big problem seems not to be wattage per se, but the current limiters mandated by ATX12V 2.0+ on the 12V rails. It's not that the PSU's can't supply enough power, but that many PSUs won't allow that much power to go over any given rail for safety  reasons. If you're building a system...

Intel's new microarchitecture: Merom, Conroe, Woodcrest

There are details about it from IDF all over the net. Blah, blah, blah. This, on the other hand, is rather interesting --to say the least (41% in F.E.A.R. :o). I have no doubt that AMD's dual-core prices are going to be significantly lower in several months.

    New Intel-based Mac Mini.

The problem is that any PC, no matter how cheap its insides, that's going to look good, is going to cost a pretty penny. I've yet to find a decent looking case for an appliance PC at a reasonable price.

    Paint.Net - Alternative to Photoshop

Picasa. It seems to be quite highly recommended across the net, but it is more an asset management program AFAIK, which is quite different from a Paint program like Paint.net. The former is a general purpose image editor; the latter is designed for managing, archiving, publishing and basic...

    Why must TV forsake me?

I'm quite perturbed about the whole Cable Card, home-built systems fiasco myself. OTOH, since I mostly agree about the desert that is contemporary television; I don't really care as much as I might have a couple years ago. Screw 'em. The Daily Show & the Colbert Report are both, absolutely...

    Firewhybother

Personally, I consider it a good use of my RAM. I like it when my computer does what I tell it to pronto, and I frequently go back through several pages when browsing. Your problem likely has more to do with Windows' determination to page out anything that doesn't absolutely have to be in...

Have you heard of SiteAdvisor --looks interesting.

I'm a very, very, veeeerrrrry skeptical web browser. Even when I was using Windows I didn't acquire much malware. OTOH, I have to admit that SiteAdvisor looks to have the potential to be a very powerful service. The Register covers the details. It looks dangerously like a PR piece, but that...

NOAA trying to mute research on global warming.

Recycling is more of a job creation issue than anything else. OTOH, the character, good or bad, of the people who are most vocal in raising an argument has no relevance to its validity. There are few things more obvious in all of creation than the utter destruction humanity has wreaked on its...

    Musings on a new PC

I have two DFI Ultra-D's. The chipset fan is not your typical chipset fan, it doesn't seem to have a brush motor in the middle. It's spun using magnets at the edges I think. Very strange, but it's absolutely silent outside the case with my ear 6" away.

Maxtor releases firmware fix for NFORCE4

It would. But only if NCQ is enabled I believe. That's why Linux users haven't experienced these data corruption problems, our current SATA driver doesn't support NCQ.

    Songbird

On Windows I wouldn't use anything else :). On the subject of Songbird, I have to admit I'm very curious now. There's an ArsTechnica overview on it that I just read. I didn't know it aimed to be a singe frontend for multiple music stores. If it could achieve that it would be A Good Thing...

ddrueding, I know your probably interested in a Windows solution, but, if only for the record, Zoneminder looks like a very mature Linux solution. It's GPL as well. I wouldn't have thought this type of software would be particularly mature on Linux. Hell, it can even integrate with X10 home...

    Webcam hardware/software?

    Webcam hardware/software?

    Hot Rod CPU

I'm not so sure myself Sol. Firstly, the Power6 is also being used in the iSeries and pSeries. Both of which are geared towards more general-purpose, server computing --particularly the pSeries. In keeping with this, from the sounds of it, the Power6 isn't quite as wide as the Power4 & 5...

    Superbowl ads...

Thanks CougTek. As a fellow Canadian I don't get to see the real ads, and, while I generally despise all-that-is-advertising I have to admit you sometimes see some fairly funny stuff during the Superbowl. It looks like, Bud sprang for advertising north of the border as well. I remember...

    Hot Rod CPU

I'd just like to add that I think it is very interesting that IBM is going in exactly the opposite direction of everyone else in the CPU business right now. Hmmm. While this is unfortunate for all the Windows-on-P4 contributors out there, as a Linux-on-AMD contributor, this may result in an improvement in my systems' productivity. They won't get stuck on QMDs for which they are not allowed to use SSE2 optimizations :).

    Audio-extraction tool of choice?

Since all my computers use Linux, I simply use cdparanoia, and flac on the command line. I rarely burden my main PC with the ripping. Crazy butcher goes on axing frenzy on Opteron's prices

One day, I'd like to build a dual-socket, dual-core Opteron system. The price of the 265 is low enough to be interesting. On the other hand it's still far more than I would normally consider paying for a single processor, let alone two. I though AMD was all sold out and under serious capacity...

    MS: Yeah, we Phat

I'd like to think that all the makers of flash-using devices will switch to ext2. There are drivers for every major OS, and the fs is well-proven and free. Somehow though, I think we'll all be footing the bill for our crappy patent systems, and the lazy hardware vendors. FSCK!
