    10TB helium drive

Come on, man HGST=WD Samsung=Seagate There are no "decent" brands any more. The market is highly commoditized and caters to the lowest common denominator.

    10TB helium drive

LOL wot? I just picked up a 2TB 7200RPM drive for less than $60. The 1TB drives are ~$50. That's a 6x difference in cost, which is huge. Most consumers are going to balk at that price difference.

    10TB helium drive

You're in the minority. More 7200RPM drives are being sold than 5400RPM ones. So, the money savings is in dropping the slower spindle speed. Your opinions about power, noise, and reliability may be true, but they're irrelevant. The market has spoken. End of story.

    Tesla doomed

The correct answer here is that we don't need Tesla to make electric buses. Foreign companies already have a major head-start in that area, and we have been buying from them. BYD, a Chinese company, has an assembly plant in the United States and has been selling to transit agencies. I'm...

    120mm Case Fans

Futzed around this evening and figured out how to remove the screen on the fan. So, I put in an order for a NF-S12A PWM. Once I have that installed, I can figure out whether I need to replace the 140mm front intake or a better heatsink to get the noise levels where I want them.

    BIOS Hangs with Old Drives

I may have a conclusion on this. After a 16 hour power outage yesterday, I was able to finish scrubbing the the back-up and wipe the old disks. Suddenly, happy days. I built the new RAIDZ2, and that works fine, as well. I will start the restore this evening. WTF happened here?

    BIOS Hangs with Old Drives

    1. Haven't reflashed the BIOS (not even sure how), but I have reset it using the jumper. 2. It's definitely the drives and not the ports, cables, or backplane. I've tried a number of combinations, including directly through a cable. 3. There's only one SATA controller, through the FCH 4...

    BIOS Hangs with Old Drives

This is an AMD board with a SATA3 controller. I tried waiting it out, but it never seemed to proceed. All of the drives appear to be negotiating at 6Gb/s except the drives on channels 5 and 6. That's probably to do with the SATA/IDE combined mode setting, which I probably toggled and some...

    BIOS Hangs with Old Drives

The BIOS shouldn't be interacting with the data on the drives until hand-off, so I'm not sure why that should do anything. I'm booting from a USB stick. Once I redo the back-up that I accidentally deleted, I'm destroying the existing RAIDZ1 that the drives are in to create a RAIDZ2 along with...

I'm running into a strange situation with the new NAS that I'm building. When I attach any of the drives from the old NAS, the BIOS hangs with an "IDE" error code. Two-thirds if we're talking about 2.5" drives. Only a fifth on the 3.5" front. Samsung announced a 16GB SSD, but I can't imagine how ungodly the price is. It'll be a good while before the cost premium for solid state is worth it.

    GTX1060 vs RX480

As far as I can tell, the 1060 is generally 5 to 10% better and 10 to 20% more expensive than the RX 480. Seems like it may be worth it for some people, but not for others. I feel like Nvidia blew it on pricing. They could have easily buried AMD with a better card at the same price point.
