I can't surf after some time of idling

Hey! Sounds very familiar to me. Meanwhile, I have downloaded BitTornado this morning. And am using it now. Will try to find out if I can continue to browse. Click back in an hour or two.

I can't surf after some time of idling

not to sound ungrateful in the last post, mercutio. I really am a newbie when it comes to networking and the Web. Really appreciate your (and the whole lot of SF regulars) quick and knowledgeable responses to my queries.

I can't surf after some time of idling

ahhhh! ok, will try that. you know, this is somewhat your fault... In one other thread I read that you preferred BitComet. :) anyway, you're on a lot faster connection. I didn't think it would matter, being that I've not experienced anything more than 3.2kPbs until the 13th of this month.

I can't surf after some time of idling

I have checked for spyware and adware, comes up clean. Using adaware, spybot S&D and spyware blaster. I don't think I have a virus. AVG is updated almost every day.

I can't surf after some time of idling

I regularly download some files by Flashget (FireFox Flashgot plug-in). And I have some files queued on BitComet. I can usually surf while all that is going on at speeds roughly equal to or even faster than my old dial-up connection (~2.3 kBps) But after I stop surfing let's say for an hour or...

    Opera is now Free

I would love to do that, really, really love to. But the electric bill is high enough as it is, the missus would bonk me on the head and throw the PC out on the street if it ever went over P2,000 (USD40) per month. Sometimes I can get away with keeping it on overnight when I am...

    Opera is now Free

like a happy kid with a new toy I liked Opera and Firefox enough because of the tabs to leave IE. But I missed being able to read the pages I previously visited while offline. This was important to me because I was on dial-up and I would download pages off the online newspaper and read it...

    Opera is now Free

I am using Opera8.5 as I type this. it feels speedy. I think I like it. I have use 7.1 and 7.21 before but I never really caught it. Used it only because it had a good download manager. And it is cleaner than before. I remember the Opera I used looked cramped. And yes, I remember having...

http://opera.com/free/ the guys in the tech forum here at home are all agog. They say it is less of a resource hog than the Fox. What do you people think?

    Rollcall: who is running what?

Gilbo, yes they are great deals. We can buy the A64 Sempron 2500+ for less money than the old Socket A 2400+ Sempron. Of course the Socket 754 mobos cost more... My upgrade dilemma is whether to buy a P4 2.4 which I can still afford (the 2.8 is not) or to switch platforms again. Overclocking...

    Rollcall: who is running what?

64-bit semprons here at home, many techies in our forum (tipidpc.com) are agog over the overclockability of these new 64-bit Semprons, specifically the 2500+, 2600+ and the 2800+. they get them running at 320 FSB x 7 or 8 using NF3 or NF4 chipset mobos. That is mind-boggling for me. Do...

http://home.ripway.com/2005-5/300796/Folder%20Name/PhotographyGroup/servercasing.jpg Well, here is my personal "hernia buster". I suppose they are the same size as those in the picture. Had to take it down as I am donating the 32mb Trident to a friend who does not have a video card (meaning he...

    Rollcall: who is running what?

Hey! sorry I had 2nd thoughts about mentioning the word "hernia" anyway, the server casing is really heavy, the old steel plate is not like the new ones coming out where you can use the edges of the case to shave your mustache. And I dread having to do work on the machine's innards. I have to...

    Rollcall: who is running what?

hahaha, taz. Nothing of the kind. I saw it sitting around in my friend's office. I asked about it and he said, we're going to use it in training some street kids how to assemble/disassemble PCs. I said, you're going to give the boys hernias while you're at it. What if I swap a lighter (you bet)...

    Rollcall: who is running what?

Here's what I have. It's only 1 machine. Its legacy goes back to 1995 when I first bought an AMD 386DX42 with a 100mb hard disk drive and a glorious 1mb 72-pin memory stick. Processor - Intel Celeron-D 2.53 (a shame, this, after all my years as an AMD person) 6 months old Motherboard - Epox...

Future NEC DVD burners -- Caveat Emptor !

The CD/DVD burning sites have posted the BenQ DW1640 and the NEC 3540A as favorites as of late. I paid the equivalent of US$64 for my NEC. Doubtless my friend paid a whole lot less for it to cover his expenses and legwork. He said the BenQ was going for a few dollars less. Good value for...

Future NEC DVD burners -- Caveat Emptor !

I wanted to buy a BenQ 1640 for my first drive. BUT, the person who was buying it for me was too early at the shops and the places which had opened has only NEC 3540A's. So I got a NEC instead. Well, it's my first DVD burner and I think it is good enough. Burns 8X media at 8X. Once got 4X media...

    WD800JB, 80gb 8mb buffer drives, should I buy?

Thanks Buck, does that mean they are old models? Hmmm. Not good, the person offering them made like they were new. Well, probably new, as in unused, but old stock. That is discouraging. Another question. Why is it that many of the people here "do not like" WD drives. Is this a recent thing...

    WD800JB, 80gb 8mb buffer drives, should I buy?

There's a deal offered me for the above, 2 of them. should I bite? What's to not like. OTOH, what's to like? I'm thinking they would make video editing a bit more responsive, I mean 3 drives, 1 boot, 1 capture, 1 intermediate files, (I have an 80gb samsung) Thanks a lot.

UltraDMA CRC Error Count attribute is very low!

tried out swapping a power connector. no change. might be really something wrong with the drive. Funny thing is, as time goes by the drive life prediction gets better and better. It's now predicting the drive to die in the year 2011

What anti-spyware anti-adware combos do you use nowadays?

Wow, has this thread been running! sorry for the late response, I was troubleshooting a client's rig and couldn't check back. I am on dial-up, a supposedly 52K connection. but observing the connection's status, the number of bytes received is tallied, the number stops for a while, say 10-15...

What anti-spyware anti-adware combos do you use nowadays?

hmmm, I use Firefox, too. It seems many of you are saying, maybe the reason I'm not getting any infections is because I'm not infected. could it be my modem is choking up? it's 3 years old. could that be the reason my connection is so slow?

What anti-spyware anti-adware combos do you use nowadays?

Hello. Since the start of the spyware/adware crisis, I have used 3 programs mostly because of feedback from this place: 1. Adaware 2. Spybot S&D 3. Spyware Blaster Got to thinking, maybe they don't cut it anymore, because my dial-up is crawling. Scans don't come up with anything. What's new in...

    Buying 17" LCD monitors

can you give us the 17" Acer model you say you like? Hello Tannin, Acer is doing a promo here in the Philippines. Give them a working 17" CRT and they slash 4,000 pesos off the list price of some LCD models. Your post is one of the first things I've read saying something good about Acer LCD's...

A serious error hs occurred while writing t drive C: retry?

tried this, no go. Ouch! Does this really happen? I've worked this setup on NForce2 chipset mobo, KT400 mobo and newer SiS chipsets. Please don't tell me I will have to buy a newer capture card. I am ghosting this partition and will try dual booting to the same partition. Hope it works.

A serious error hs occurred while writing t drive C: retry?

I used to be able to dual boot Win98 and 2K from different partitions on a single 80Gb hard drive. Needed the Win98 only because my old Matrox capture card has no drivers for the newer OS’s. When I changed my mobo to an MSI KT6V-LSR (Via KT600) I couldn’t get the Win98 partition to work (I...

    IDE hard drive poll

I like Maxtors. They have not failed me yet. But then again, I tend to dispose of my Hard Drives when they are 2 years old. But my customers (precious few) seem to have nursed their Maxtors well. So there. But maybe the above is because I was partial to Quantum, it being the brand of my 1st ever...

    Intermittent lag in windows response

I am experiencing intermittent lag in the response of my computer. There are times when I've typed a few words in MS Word and nothing comes out until, say 3 to 5 seconds later when all that I have typed suddenly bursts into the page I'm typing. Windows Explorer doesn't exhibit that behavior...

Thank you all for the replies, will research your suggestions. I was in the wife's province for the annual "All Saint's Day" observances. First time I've heard of Linspire, will surely check it out. But having two votes for KDE must mean a lot. Open Office will be there for sure, Tannin. BTW...

WinXP does not list (detect) maxtor80Gb on Promise Ultra66

I triple boot, W98, W2K, and XP (for some reason). I have 2 HDDs and 2 optical drives on my mobo's 2 IDE channels. The partitions are a mix of Fat32 and NTFS owing to the use of W98. For some reason XP does not see the 80Gb Maxtor drive with a single partition on my Promise Ultra 66 ATA card. It...
