I'm starting to get annoyed with Dell Tech Support

Interestingly, the few in warranty Dell systems that I've worked on where the customer was worried about keeping their warranty intact, called Dell and asked them if my monkeying around in the system would void the warranty. Apparently, since I'm a reseller with a busines license, the warranty...

    Ultra low-end dilemma.

Sempron would be my choice. Currently, I have the 2600, 3000, 3100, 3300, and 3400 available. When they are available, I view the 3100 and 2600 as the best value.

    Housecleaning Standards

My standard is pretty lenient. As long as I'm not concerned that there is some bio-hazard material, I'll clean it. That's one reason why I recently purchased a small cannister vacuum cleaner. It does a great job blowing out all the dust/lint/pet hair. Compressed air is useless in my opinion...

Ramblings on the brands we love (or hate)

Interesting observations Liam. I've had a total of two Samsung drives fail over the past three years. I figured it wasn't worth the RMA process. I looked at their kludge of a setup they offer online and then tossed the drives in the trash. WD have a very easy RMA process. The only trouble...

Budget enclosures research. Asus and Logisys.

That isn't good. I only use the G2 series from them and have only had to replace one PSU. I couldn't tell if it was the fault of the PSU or not. Their electrical mains are flaky -- sags and brown-outs are common for them. They are now using UPS units. I never suspected that their posh part...

    Windows *Vista*

As strange as this may seem to some, I do like Windows XP. I like the GUI and its interoperability with a wide variety of hardware (much better than Windows 2000). Nonetheless, the ancillary applications that come along with Windows XP are admittedly poor -- such as IE and OLE. Yet, many of...

The woes of OEM systems. Mark, if you can (and find the experiment amusing) I would wait. It isn't your only system. However, if it was critical, I would replace the fan (or PSU if a standard item fit).

    Musings on a new PC

Not me. I sell systems with a CPU speed that will last several years. Typically it is the other components that need an upgrade after 3 years. Regardless of any upgrade path, I still wouldn't buy Biostar.

    Memtest x86 Question

I know this doesn't seem to relate to your error code, but I would also test the hard drive. If you are running large WU's, memory will be hogged and Windows will swap more frequently, even for routine duties.

    what color is this?

For one, the color depends on the brightness and contrast setting for your monitor. With a 19" CRT and my standard high-contrast/low-brightness setting, it looks like Pantone Reflex Blue. As I maximize the brightness the color changes to Pantone Violet and finally Pantone Purple. These colors...
