AM2 - Let the Games Begin

I like the current availability of lower priced AM2 Sempron processors, such as the 3000+ and 3400+. I think it is time to make the switch to AM2.

    Preferred firewall for Windows?

Fortunately, most of my users are C and get along just fine without a software firewall. I rarely get user B, and when I do, they usually come along with a user C.

Ramblings on the brands we love (or hate)

Regarding a brand that I've grown to love: Kingston. Their memory always works for me. It lasts and doesn't give me any compatibility issues. I've used other brands with about a 67% success rate. I'm sticking with Kingston.

    Win to *nix migration

I started with Crossover Office (the program that comes with SuSe 10), but that didn't work. So I downloaded WINE and installed it; that didn't work either.

I haven't been able to get Photoshop to work with WINE and SuSe 10. Merc, when you mentioned using VMware, did you mean EMC's VMware Player? (I'm not familiar with virtual machine stuff, and am interested in learning.)

AM2 - Let the Games Begin

Turned out to be a nice system. I really like the Gigabyte video card with heat-pipes. It certainly keeps the noise of the system to a minimum. The RAID feature from nVidia was easy to use. It sure was nice to have to channels so that I could boot from a single SATA drive on one channel and...

AM2 - Let the Games Begin

I’m building my first AM2 system for a client. I didn’t think it would come around this quickly, as socket 754 is still a great performer for offices and comes at a great price. Nonetheless, this is not a typical customer, so we’re venturing into the AM2 arena. Here is the hardware list...

    Car RANT

The issue isn't performance, it is reliability. I do avoid certain computer brands for that very reason, as I know you do too. Now, if GM's quality or reliability has increased, it will become evident to everyone as the years roll by. If this is what happens, then eventually, I would be...

    Why Antivirus Software sucks

Although Eset does not recommend it, I have found NOD32 to be compatible with many existing anti-virus programs. On the other hand, Kaspersky has caused Windows to blue-screen on me when combined with McAfee (Kaspersky and NOD32 has worked).

    World Cup 2006, June 9 - July 9

Germany beat Costa Rica 4:2 for the opening game! Although I'm happy they won, I'm also disappointed with Germany's performance. Their passing was sub-par and their defense seemed nonexistent. They're not going to go very far in this World Cup.

    Weird Hard Ddrve

Seagate, Maxtor and WD primarily use Solectron. However, from what I've found, Solectron doesn't act as a sub-contractor. They actually purchase the drives, refurbish them, and then sell them as white label drives with their own warranty.

    Weird Hard Ddrve

It's really hard to tell. First, the picture they show is for an old tape-seal style drive. So the picture doesn't match the actual product. Secondly, there are third-party vendors that purchase failed hard drives from hard drive manufacturers, recertify and relabel the drives themselves...
