    Low powered computer thread

The T series adds better graphics (and AVX instructions [and HT {meh}]) to the Pentium; makes integrated good enough to eliminate the need for discrete video card for HD playback and even some older 3D games are passable. Dave, I'd turn the rear exhaust fan into an intake and add a magnetic...

I've been rather happy with my Epson 8350 (image quality and brightness are very good) until recently. Bulb popped in less than a year, but Epson replaced it for free via overnight FedEx (early bulb failure known issue with this model), and free return shipping of old bulb. Turns out that there...

    Technet Advice

Quick tip: TechNet (standard, at least) will only allow you to claim a certain number of license keys a day, so request them early. I don't remember what the number was for me, but it was fairly high; probably over 15.

Pshaw! Could you run VisiCalc and WordStar simultaneously using xTree? I think I still have a copy of xTree Pro somewhere... Edit: Yup, at least so it says on this 5.25 floppy; it is in the same case with some original grey Norton Utilities discs.

    Like the new upgrade...

I wasn't clear (not unusual). I like low contrast between the background color and icons for fora without new posts. My ideal setup would be essentially transparent icons for items without new content, with any solid color indicating new posts. The color of the icons is not relevant to me...

    Folding@Home

Quick update on the C32/G34 match. Turns out the C32 board really wasn't totally dead, just dead for me. Needed to update the BIOS and then the 4280s were recognized. Of course you can't update the BIOS without a functional 4100 Opteron, so Amazon is getting one returned this week (hey, they...

    Folding@Home

The G34 board looked like it was damaged after final QA; one of the pins in the socket was misaligned - right were a careless application of the protective cover would damage it. After that experience, I was extraordinarily careful in inspecting and handling the C32 board; it looks fine, but...

    The destruction of liberty

To me, the UK student case is much more offensive than the MegaUpload situation. Really, UK citizens should be up in arms about that one; if the UK courts find that the extradition treaty covers this sort of offence, they have become the 51st state. The if the facts alleged in the indictment of...

Heh. You noticed before I did. About 260K for that unit, but not that impressive overall - took about 3.75 days. Once I add real work duties to that box (2x Opteron 6128 ), it might not make the bonus deadline.

    Windows 8 Storage Spaces

My take was that you created a multi-terabyte pool, but the space available in that pool is the actual space available. Simple example: Create 10TB pool. Install 2x 1TB drives and assign them to the pool. OS reports 10TB volume with 2TB available space. You then add more 2x 2TB drives to the...

    Multicore weirdness

Can often be fixed by run>msconfig>boot>advanced options>uncheck num procs (if checked) or selecting correct #procs>reboot. Dunno why sometimes Windows doesn't pick up on additional cores. IIRC, you can also update the ACPI HAL from device manager, but I don't remember doing that since Win2K.

Decent what? I pre-ordered a Fire, and after a month of intermittent use, I can see the appeal for some people. Unfortunately, I am not one of those people. I'll wait for a slightly larger screen and greatly increased resolution; video playback is fine, but IMO the screen is too constrained...

How to Windows SoftRAID USB drives?

I'd at least look into adding an eSATA ExpressCard with that enclosure. IIRC, some cards offer port multiplier support so that the user can see all drives at once. You might be able to semi-reliably set up a Windows RAID 5 that way... (9TB or 12TB on a USB connection - hope that user has...

    LSI RAID ????

Bummer. Might as well try to set WB via the CLI (if you haven't already) to see what error code it returns - might give more clues. Hell, it might just work but I'm doubtful, as no BBU will work with that adapter (according to Intel, BBU functionality is outside the targeted price/performance...

    LSI RAID ????

From my quick reading of the CLI manual(PDF), it looks like the BBU options are tied to the each array, rather than being a global adapter-wide setting. Maybe the checkbox is nested somewhere under array properties. Look for LDSetProp in the above PDF for more info.

    Kalifornia=1984 50% tax on water

Yup. 10 cents per bottle 24 ounces or larger, 5 cents each for smaller. Doesn't depend on price of contents. If you were charged more than that the store made a mistake or there is some other local program that is adding fees. The program has some weird exceptions, like distilled spirits.

The performance of the recorded music likely falls under the non-commercial/charitable exemption; no entrance charge, no charge to hear, etc. If it is performed by loudspeakers, it seems to fall within the exemption. Finally got a chance to install the Antec 920 on my 2600K. I only installed it with one fan to start as I don't have time right now to tweak OC settings, and I figured it would be fine on one fan at stock speeds. Under most uses, the 120mm fan runs at 600-1000 r.p.m. - I can't hear it or the...
