    Athlon 64 3200+ 939?

FX has totally unlocked multiplier, regular A64s are locked for higher multipliers, it's possible to select lower multiplier than the stock one - this is basically what Cool 'n' Quiet does. I can't speak for Opterons. They don't have CnQ, neither do the S940 FXs. I've understood that S939 FXs...

    O/C ing on S754--mobo recommendation

7000A is identical to 7000, it just comes with the mounting gear for Socket 462 (which makes it a bit more expensive). 7000B is slightly revised version; I can't tell much about the improvements, all I know is that it's slightly lighter than 7000/7000A. What is more interesting is the...

    O/C ing on S754--mobo recommendation

I think this is a feature of the CO core: when using two sticks of RAM, the memory controller automatically drops to 166 MHz to maintain 1T command rate. Manually setting the speed to 200 MHz forces 2T command rate. Cheers, Jan

    Looking for a new MB

I asked as one can run the faster versions (3200+ etc.) @ 2 GHz. Your fanless temps seem amazing, given that the stock AMD cooler is a tad smaller than the Zalman. But from what You tell there seems to be quite a breeze inside the case compared to my setup: I have only one 120 mm Nexus (should...

    Looking for a new MB

Um... What CPU? Mobile? What heat sink/fan/voltage? A64s have working HALT/SLEEP modes, so they don't use (=waste) that much power when idling when compared to AXP - Intel's products have mastered the power states better in the past. IIRC I had similar experiences with the "no fan at idle"...

    SCSI disappointment

Most likely You are hitting the max. PCI transfer rate of your motherboard. If You run WinBench99's DTR test (HDTach has been unreliable with RAID arrays in the past, dunno about the current situation), with RAID You should see the transfer rate go virtually unchanged (~80 MB/s) to the end of...

    Looking for a new MB

No, I'm using the nForce3 version - MSI K8N Neo Platinum. And I'm using a regular A64, no mobile version. From what I've read at MSI forum, this new v1.4 BIOS has a better support for those mobile A64s. Something about being able to change the default VID for the CPU. Haven't really looked at...

    Looking for a new MB

Dunno about that, but I tried to run my HSF without the F. Running 1 GHz@0,85V with the Zalman fan unplugged I managed to do 48°C while running Prime95. I did have a case fan - the Nexus 120mm one. I'd also like to mention that the temp readout is wonky (showing way too much), so the mentioned...

    Samsung HDD running at 110F/43C?

    News: XP SP2 is out

Hmm... Has MS changed that list? I checked it yesterday, and it had over 200 entries (as said in The Register's news above). Games like UT and UT2004. Now the list seems to be revised. All the programs listed today seem to have real problems. BSOD loops are not nice... :-? Cheers, Jan

    Power Measure/Rating? Cost?

The wattages on power supplies are max. rated wattages. The actual usage for a regular computer is around 100-150 Watts. There are devices like Kill-a-Watt which can measure the power used by the computer. Here's an article (in German) with some measurements. The numbers speak for themselves...

Building my GF a new system: critique please

Here's simply the best review (and the only one I've read :)) about Aria. Check on page five for the fitting. Perhaps this one is more illustrative. Especially as it is in German. :D Bottom line: You'd need to undervolt a Barton (or use a mobile version) to get to the low power level of 2800+...

Building my GF a new system: critique please

Is this the one with a Zalman HP-80? The area between an AGP slot and the ARIA PSU is quite minute. I don't think that any extrusion from the GFX card is allowed (towards PSU, that is). Also, I don't think that it's not so beneficial to buy a mobile version of A64. Don't be fooled by the 89W...

Backups? SATA or ide? or Firewire?

Nec ND-2510A seems like a winner, if it's as identical to 2500 as they claim. Good media compatibility, cheap. ATM few local shops here are listing a lone LiteOn DL model for ~170€, whereas Nec is ~95€ only. Is bit-setting an important feature? Nec doesn't support it out-ot-the-box, but there...

    AMD CPU, RAM pricing

This is the data sheet from AMD. Both 3000+ and 3200+ run at 2 GHz, but 3200+ has 1 MB L2. There is however a version of 3200+ (OPN ends with AX) that runs at 2,2 GHz and has only 512kB L2. When I last checked NewEgg (a week ago or so) they had A64's with only the older revision on sale. There...

    Normalizing mp3s

I thought that they mastered the newer discs louder as they would be able to obtain more dynamic range by doing so. CD-DA has dynamic range of 96 dB, but one can get "wider" range by shifting the zero dB position. Say, boost ten or 20 dB. One can't really hear that the sound never stops as...
