Splash: What are you using for new systems at work?

There is the need of spare parts for the current servers that run on PCI-X. Maybe there will be no more speed increases, but I'd expect at least five years more for PCI-X. But PCI-X will never become a bus for "normal" motherboards. Hopefully we'll see better than 1x PCI Express slots in...

    So when?

You can boot DOS from those pen drives, perhaps even Win9x. Win2k/XP needs drivers (boot mode/kernel, that is). It's just a matter of how the pen drive is emulated, and what the motherboard's BIOS supports; USB FDD, USB HDD and/or USB CD-ROM. Cheers, Jan

    PrintMe

Yeah, 4.x for me too... It's just so much faster to start and render the pages. 4.x starts in less than a second (1 GHz and above), 5.x in five seconds, and 6.x (IIRC) needs more than ten... I tried 6.x one time, and that was enough. What a bloatware. I have to use 5.x at work, and it gets a...

    About lapping...

I did lap my Celeron's HS (Intel retail one) with 1200 grit. Basically because that was the first piece I found (OK, the first one was 400...). Mostly I sanded off the remainders of Intel's thermal goop/patch, but I didn't get mirror finish. IIRC You'd have to use some kind of polishing...

''State Of The Art'' CPU Cooling (Circa Dec 2003)

Zalman CNPS7000A-AlCu is the easiest solution. It comes with a FanMate (and a fan...), so it's ready to run out of the box. I haven't tried, but I've read that Zalman's fans have inconsistent quality (e.g. some run with 5 V, some don't), so the quietness is determined on how good Zalman fan You...

    "Ignore" function

And the blocking wouldn't work very well, if someone else quotes a part of the post from the user who is ignored by You... Also, the continuity of the thread can cause more double-posting (not by same user, but posts of same context). Blocking per thread could work though. Cheers, Jan

    Random Hard Drive Shutdowns

I think it runs on both (well, at least both 5 V and 12 V go to the adapter). IIRC max. current rating for the wire used in PSU cables (16 AWG) is 6 A. That's per one wire. I did run a PowerLeap & 1,3 GHz Tualatin with 230 W Enlight PSU. Compared to the old processor (PIII 600E @ 1,3 V) I could...

Kerio Personal Firewall for windows....Free version

I miss the "master switch": deny all/ask me... It seems that I have to do "Block all not permitted" -rule for my parent's computer to lessen the support calls. It's bit slower to disable than the "master switch" though (when I'm using the computer). BTW, CityK, do You see where the "time...

Power Efficiencies - batteries, wall warts etc.

Well, kinda... That's just PROM... BIOS chips are Flash ROM (I'm not sure whether the suffix "ROM" is justified with Flash...). Static electricity is bad for those chips. Especially as one must change them often. You'd need some sort of protective cover to shield the pins when the card is out...

    Building a Storage Server Thread

Using 100baseT You'll limit the max. transfer rate to 10 MB/s (to the clients, that is). So 32 bit PCI is not that much of a limitation to the 3Ware, as You can't get the data through the Ethernet port any faster. But with Gbit Ethernet You will get into trouble fast. Not because of the added...

Dell to offer 16ms response time 20" LCD (2001FP)

Is installing the VIA 4-in-1 drivers necessary?

XP has some version slipstreamed (IIRC 4.38?), so maybe there is still need for an update for the 8xAGP, which all new boards have. I don't know if Windows Update could install the VIA 4.40 AGP driver (or what's it called). If You are installing 4-in-1s, I'd suggest You head to some forum (like...

    [Warranty News]: WD Changes Warranty

I guessed it right then... I think selling retail drives with only 1yr. warranty will make the price more competitive. After all, one can still buy the Extended Warranty for $14.95. I don't know what the pricing is in US, but I think that dropping the warranty could cut the prices...

    [Warranty News]: WD Changes Warranty

Remember that both Maxtor and Seagate had both only 1yr. warranties when they lowered their warranty periods. Now both have "high-end models" (read: drives with 8MB buffer) which have 3yr. warranty. Perhaps WD will readjust the warranties in the future. Needless to say that marketshare of...

If You log into your own workstation (not to the server) You need to use exactly the same user/pass for the shares in server to function properly.
