    Nvidia launches latest video card...

Well, I've been eyeing this one. It should be no surprise that I'd have to pay ~300€ whereas... Standard 9800Pro is about 240€. Cheers, Jan

The good thing about these new cards from ATi and nVidia is that the older models will become cheaper. Hopefully. Cheers, Jan

    Sealed plastic clamshell packaging

OEM packaging is good. When one orders, say, 20 HDs, they come in one pallet, packed much like the Radeons You ordered. Swiftech also uses plain cardboard box. Zalman has much bling-bling, the packages are just like e_dawg mentioned in the 1st post. Painful to open, and sometimes cannot be...

    The CougTek - Newegg connection

Bigger and heavier boxes cost more to ship. Small and lightweight stuff would still be much cheaper. 21" Sony/NEC/Mitsubishi? Expensive. Those damned Dell 20" TFTs would be in the borderline. Also, I'm not so sure that I would use this to get some HDs. They seem more prone to break the more...

I'd like GPS and MP3. DVD/divx? Maybe for the back-seaters... E-mail and web if one REALLY needs it. The text would be so small that You'd have to stop to see it properly. It would be nice if a voice read the e-mails... [The use of mobile phones in cars while driving was banned here as phones...

    The CougTek - Newegg connection

Good idea, but for me the rates are too high. Annual membership fees, packing and postages... Maybe worthwhile if I'd order few CPUs and couple gigs of mem every time (along with stuff I'd order personally), and then sold them here... 8) Cheers, Jan

I've thought about car computers a bit. Unfortunately I'd need the car first... Digital WorldWide has some TFT screens. Especially this 7" motorized one, though it's not out yet. How big exactly is double DIN? Unless one really has to haul tons of MP3s, laptop drives are good...

    Building a dirt-cheap HTPC....

Now that's what a HTPC should look like! I mean, like a big bad-ass power amp. But it should be much higher (say, six inches or so) to accommodate all gear and cooling that's quiet enough. No buttons, though a cool but discreet logo, back-lighted with a blue LED or two could be added to...

    "Natural" keyboard

I use a natural with my primary comp, regular with my older comp. What I find irritating is that whenever I change types (regular/natural), I can't seem to be able to hit dot/comma/"m" correctly for 15-30 mins. Well, maybe it has something to do about the fact that I'm left-handed... BTW, I...

[NEWS] Hard drives: 600GB by 2007

I tend to think this also. I'm predicting we'll see ~100 GB 2.5" drives. But it is uncertain whether we will actually use 2.5" drives then. In the end it will all depend on how fast OEM case manufacturers can implement 2.5" bays. Cheers, Jan

Onboard vs. PCI sound and LAN

Um... looks like my train of thought de-railed on that post. I meant i875 chipsets... I meant that i875 supports only Intel Gbit chips, not from 3Com or Broadcom etc., or at least that's what I believe. Cheers, Jan

    SMC 8505T GIGe switch

I'd just use both fans, and connect them in series. If the fans are identical (same manuf./model), they'd both run at 6 volts. That should lower the noise a lot, provided they start with 6 volts. Cheers, Jan

Onboard vs. PCI sound and LAN

I'd like to add that some i865 boards, which have a Gbit chip onboard, don't use CSA. So the chip is actually connected to SB/PCI. Which increases the bottleneck Blake pointed out. I think that CSA is only compatible with Intel Gbit chips. Cheers, Jan

    [NEWS] - Video Encoding

Well, 2.4C beats Barton 2500+ in nearly every test, as it should (basing on previous tests). I'm quite surprised to see Cel 2.4 so near to 2.4Cs in some tests. Although merely a curiosity, would the Hyper-Threading CPUs perform somewhat better if one'd run two (or even more) encodings at the...

Splash: What are you using for new systems at work?

Yes, but the entire channel (more specifically, the PCI-X bridge segment) will run at the speed of the slowest card. The i7505 You mentioned has two separate PCI-X busses, plus two "regular" PCI slots. Cheers, Jan

    What did Santa bring you?

Thanks Blake, that's a very good link. Not to my surprise, those 2300 mAh batteries I mentioned are Lenmar. Even if they are overrated, as the test shows for other Lenmar batteries, they'll still be near the top. I must see if there are any other batteries sold here that are on the list...

    Suggestions for new power supply

I'd also recommend the FSP350-60PN (the one CougTek linked). It's very quiet; unless You have a Seagate Barracuda IV/Barracuda V/7200.7, or a drive from the new Samsung series, the HD is going to be louder. But it lacks Active PFC. This is bit sucky. But to mess your plans, here is the 300 W...

Splash: What are you using for new systems at work?

Actually, the BTX form factor requires that the board is exactly 266,70 mm deep (front-back), and the width may vary from 203,20 mm to 325,12 mm, depending on the type of the board (standard BTX, micro-, pico). But this is just Intel's perspective... Cheers, Jan

''State Of The Art'' CPU Cooling (Circa Dec 2003)

If the computer crashes under heavy load often, with high temps, I'd be refining the CPU/case cooling. Or clean the dust accumulations... :D AFAIK, both AMD and Intel use same HSF combos for their entire lines. If they say it's sufficient, then it is. It's completely different situation if...

Splash: What are you using for new systems at work?

EISA was created because other manufacturers weren't too happy to pay IBM licence fees for MCA. Basically just an extension to ISA. PCI was great when it was first introduced, but ten years is a long time. AGP was generated to get the GPU out from saturating PCI bus, and after that device...
