Oh my that is a lot of scratch for a CPU. Intel has always pushed the cost envelope on the extreme top-end CPU's especially with Xeons.

5000 PPD give 1M in a year. My first year folding I produced 60,000 points with a dual CPU folding. The 1100M should be foldable under both CUDA and OpenCL folding cores (Core_15 and Core_17). It's basic architecture is Kepler (GTX 5xx) based which is supported. The big issue with GPU...

Would you buy a vomit box if it came with decent hardware for a reasonable price?

I've bought several Dell machines just because they were much cheaper than I could build them myself. My two 3.2GHz P4 Dimension 8400's come from exactly that: The entire machine was priced lower than I could buy just the CPU and I was able to sell off the monitors, on Ebay, and got another...

I'd just stay with GPU folding rather than go 2-4P CPU. If I were to build a mega-system from scratch I'd get a MB with lots of PCI-e slots, a low-end CPU with at least one core per PCI-e slot, and a PS to exceed the expected power needs of all your GPU's planned then add GPU's as your budget...

Because I like Chrome: It's simple and clean. My opinion is that you should try both and pick whichever you like to use most.

I've found that going to local Taco Bells during strange hours gets bigger burritos and taco's and when busy I get less. I know that is an anathema for a national FF chain because standardization is key but is seems to be true locally. 9:00 am is a good time and 11:30 much worse.

problem Desktop pc freezes resume after 14 months of utter bliss

Your two error messages do not specify the cause of the reboot. So they are of limited value for diagnostic purposes. Safe mode still loads Microsoft generic drivers, just not the drivers that are specific for your HW. As such most of your HW still runs, just not as efficient or to used its...

problem Desktop pc freezes resume after 14 months of utter bliss

No, a working safe mode does not totally exclude HW because it limits what the HW does but it does indicate a preference towards drivers/software as a cause. On the other hand, swapping RAM slots does totally exclude SW as a cause. Have you looked at the Windows system event logs for error...

I too leave it at full 100% of the time. However, I maintain advanced control on my screen and if I have any need I simply right-click on the gpu slot and pause it and the right-click to unpause it when the need no longer exists. You can probably do better by moving the power-slider between...

    GPU folding is here!

I do not know if you've done it but if not, you are still likely to want to drop the number of threads used by the CPU slot from (-1 = automatic) to one less than the number of CPU cores the processor has so that you are not over-subscribing the CPU.

If you need/want all the possible options, you can set the verbosity = 5 and restart the client. GPU folding is here!

Move the power slider from medium to full (In FAHControl). By default (Medium power level) the GPU only folds when the computer is idle (i.e. screensaver is running). This is so you do not experience Lag when using the computer.

9 seconds of log isn't much to go on but I have questions: Are you running a 64 or 32 bit Linux kernel? X64 Kernal is required for GPU folding in Linux and you also have to have the x64 bit Linux folding client. Next, what happens if you try to add a GPU slot (There isn't one defined in your...

    Helium filled hard drives

You pull it out of the oil (messy); replace the HW; and put it back. There is no reason an entire rack can't be submerged as long as you have a big enough tank and something that can lift it in and out. The primary problem were HD's and that was because of the air-hole which is now eliminated...

    Helium filled hard drives

Oil baths are an interesting cooling system. Having no air-hole means you can submerge the HD's rather than needing to separate the HD's from the rest of the machine which is entirely submerged in non-conductive mineral oil. Why use water on individual components when you can cool everything...

It is not the absolute temp of the air being pumped in the room that matters because you do not know how much air every second is being added at 200C. A better comparison is 400W (290x) vs 350W (Titan) at load or 89 (290x) vs 80W (Titan) at idle. So the difference at maximum load for the 290...
