I want to buy a new car

Well, I'm still driving my '96 Honda Accord (purchased new in '95) though it is now starting to show signs of wear. This past week I actually had to do my first repair because a computer went out that controlled a rear Window that is currently stuck open; the driver seat upholstery is showing...

    Windows 8.1

I would contend that there needs to be a very good reason to make a major change in a user-interface. That change will alienate a lot of your most loyal customers. Ribbons vs menus produce little functional difference so all you get is alienation and anger just like forcing the new Win 8 user...

I want to buy a new car

I really must be missing something because I do not see the appeal of a peak HP/Torque anywhere above 3000 rpm's for normal city/Hwy driving. I can see it being needed for racing but other than that, no rational that I can think of. I also understand buying a high performance sports car but...

    Surface Pro

The Surface Pro is heavy, excessively expensive. Other than that, I rather liked it. If the RT were close to free, I might use it till I didn't want to anymore and then throw it away. It's problem is that it is a technological dead-end. No one is going to write stuff for it.

    Folding with multiple GPUs?

No, not necessarily. OC'ing can cause VRM's causing the clockrate to drop like a rock which won't show up in the logs. There is also a failure mode that causes the logs to just stop recording though the client thinks the cores are progressing but in reality they are not. Both of these seem to...

    Folding with multiple GPUs?

Need more details (like logs). My immediate reaction is OC'ing. Check clock rates of your cards. Core_17 is very sensitive to OC'ing and will cause clock rates to spontaneously drop and stay that way till rebooted. I really maintain systray monitoring of clock rates, %GPU usage, and temp for...

    GPU folding is here!

Be very conservative with OC'ing with CORE_17. It is very sensitive and will bring your PPD down a lot as it rejects p8900's (giving only pro-rated base points) or down-clocks your cards (killing of TPF's and QRB) and at the worst Core_17 claims it progresses in the client but the log stops...

They just stop working and anything plugged in gets no power. I get a replacement (I stock extras now, just in case) and everything runs again. Most of the time there is no power outages or known potential causes. I suppose that surges may be the cause but I'm not seeing any effect (other...

    Intel vs AMD

I had an argument with several others because I contended that a P4's + 2GB RAM + SSD (optional, but it does improve the user experience) & modern graphics card was fast enough that most people doing the web or office work would not be able to distinguish that machine from a high-end i7 for...

    GPU folding is here!

for AMD use Windows only for Core_17! The AMD proprietary drivers in Linux need work so Linux GPU folding is currently Nvidia only. The non-proprietary drivers for all manufacturer don't have the proper OpenCL support as of yet so you are stuck with proprietary drivers. So maybe eventually...

The benefits of Haswell over previous chips is power usage much more than performance. For desktops, power is likely to be relatively insignificant but for mobile platforms it is likely to be all-important.

Don't forget, you may or may not need to change power supplies. I have no idea if the Pico PSU supports Haswell's chipset. Power supplies designed for earlier chipset's may not power up when signaled to do so by a Haswell MB. I'm not saying it won't work, but I think you need to be prepared...

Core_17 beta WU's give QRB and thereby get 40+K PPD on 580's on p7663's. They are now switching to p8900's and those are only barely getting 30K. I'm seriously considering selling the 3x 580's and using that money to buy a 780 or 2x GTX 580 for a single HD 7970. The 780 stock gets 120K PPD on...

I went and saw a couple of movies today: Iron Man and Star Trek. I have to admit I really enjoyed Iron Man 3 and RDJ was really good in his part. I even liked Gyweneth Paltrow, quite a bit, as his wife. The plot made enough sense that I found it to be somewhat predictable. There was...

random Progress of general purpose computing

It was drilled into me a long time ago: HW is very cheap and there's always lots of surplus capability built in, but programmer time is expensive so let the user worry, if it takes 10 sec longer and an extra 100 Meg. Screens (75-100dpi) are typically much lower resolution devices than printers (300-600 dpi) so when enlarging, the computer does not have to interpolate nearly as many pixels on a screen than on a printer.

No, that is probably why the Router's DHCP was used in the first place for it worked both in the wireless domain and the wired. Currently the Router is blocking all DHCP from the wired to the wireless (Both IP4 and IPV6). P.S. Wireless router is a Netgear N600 (WNDR 3700 v.1)

OK, I found out why not to use the Windows DHCP: It does not cross the broadcast boundary at the router to the Wireless clients.
