If you want something that is really low-power yet high performance. Why not try a mini-itx solution Psile 10A case MSI GM965 motherboard Passive CPU cooler Then use the upcoming [Aug 2008] quad-core mobile penryn; your pico PS; and your SSD Or just get yourself a notebook.

I'm sorry, but I think you are screwy: An SSD is rediculious in a machine like that as a pure waste of money. Hard drives are not that power hungry and if you must just use a notebook drive. I also disagree that you should be able to call that a workstation. While the definitation of a...

    Which Car?

I really believe that this is the wrong time to be buying new car. It is too soon for the truely high efficiency vehicals to be inexpensively common and it is too late for cheap gasoline prices. As much as I dislike leasing, I believe it is the right thing to do because your car choices will...

    End of TV :(

I don't know but it really can't get much worse than what it was for bit-torrent users. The only difference is that it is now split amoung all the high BW users, rather than just bit torrent. I liked it early in Comcasts history, when all they did was block the default ports for p2p and all...

It is my understanding that because of the power-outage, their servers were overwelmed. So they suspended the statistics servers untill the backlog could be fixed. I don't think the problem had anything to do with smp. However, if you are more comfortable with the regular WU's then that's OK...

    SAN alternative

The main value I see with having multiple machines having access to the same physical drives is as a fail-over machine that really only accesses the drives when a heartbeat fails on the primary machine and then it simply takes over. The likelyhood of a cache coherency issue is far less likely...

    SAN alternative

I don't know that SAS will operate the same way as SCSI. I don't know that SAS allows for multiple controllers or even device to device operation. I'd have to do a bunch of research and testing. I have similar doubts with SAS as I did with the SATA that was mentioned previously. I have...

It was but as long as you can complete by the deadline then everything is good. SMP has a 100% bonus compared to the uniprocessor clients so it is far more efficient than two convential clients.

    SAN alternative

Perhaps you need to be dealing with UPS's and redundent power supplies. If you are that scared, perhaps you should just pony-up the money to buy truely redundent drives ... Also, you are going to be very hard pressed to find TB SCSI drives.
  18. P5-133XL

    SAN alternative

One thing that may matter to you since you plan on using 15 drives. The SCSI bus only allows for 16 unique SCSI addresses and two of them will have to be Contollers which leaves only 14 addresses for the 15 drives. You can however, do this with two seperate buses.
  19. P5-133XL

    SAN alternative

It shouldn't be a problem. Concurrent reads and writes to the same device is not a problem with SCSI because the devices typically queue data requests so that they becomes sequential. The controllers themselves won't write data to the bus unless it is free unlike Ethernet So there really isn't...

All of them will. Just connect the two servers via the each controllers external interface and make sure that nothing is sharing on the SCSI bus has same SCSI ID (Including the controllers) and of course terminate the SCSI bus properly and the two machines will see each others drives. The SCSI...

You can share HD's between servers with SCSI with controllers that have both internal and external interfaces. nVidia may have "issues"

I agree that a recall isn't going to happen and that is the correct reponse. What HP did was release a new BIOS that runs the fans faster. All that does is delay the inevitable and from their perpsective hopefully beyond the warrantee period. To me, that repsonse just reeks of no recall...

I'm going to try to incorporate energy costs. I scoured the internet to get aprox system energy usage on the various cards while loaded. I'll also assume a $0.10/KWh cost (your local cost may be different) and then extropolate all PPD and costs over a two year lifetime...

Just to clarify. at 82W if you operate it at 24x7 if will cost only $72 per year at $.1/Kwh. So if you just turn off the machine saving all the energy you will save $72. year. If you save 10W of power, then you will save only $8.70 in an entire year of continious operation. If you operate it...

Ideas for reducing PC power consumption

I agree, you probably can reduce significant power by using a high-efficiency PS, around 250-300W. Something like this -- SeaSonic SS-300ES. However, I really don't know how long it will take to repay. You need to do some calculating with a kill-a-watt; your local power rates; and a...

    SATA Ports

But you can't get the data off, if all you do is return it and get a rebuilt unit. The data is typically worth far more than the drive itself. so doing a modification, so as to get the data off and then not being able to return it is still a massive win.
