    IBM 9517 Monitors from PS/2s

What you have is a "Fixed mode" monitor. Modern monitors (Multi-mode or MultiSync) allow for multiple horizontal and vertical frequencies: That's why you can change from 640x480 to 1024x768 ... A fixed mode monitor only operates at specific horizontal and vertical frequencys. To operate a...

I would say that about 170KB/S would be my normal DL speed. I have actually tested the BW and I get close enough to not complain. However, it is highly variable. I've had upto 800+KB/s but not with a single connection, but rather using a DL accelerator or a P2P program. In general, I...

    Mormons Knocking at Your Door?

It's been many years since my door has been knocked on, and that is a good thing because my immediate reaction is to torcher those poor souls that which to attempt to convert me. In the past, I typically start out asking why does the christian god need to lie in the "Word of God" (The bible)...

After spending a day, going the rounds from store to store, I am choosing the Sony. The local fry's has it for $1,699 and the cheapest I could find it anywhere else was $2,399. I just can't beat the price. Now Fry's is about 40 miles away and that's a pain, but I went to several local stores...

    Antec P180 $69.99 after MIR w/free S&H

I suspect that it won't matter. The point in blocking off the surplus holes is to prevent an air-flow short-circuit and that shows up as poor cooling. With just one upper fan running, you won't get poor cooling, so there probably no short circuit occuring, so there is no point in blocking the...

    GPU folding is here!

By the way, the new updated Beta client, now supports X1600, x1800, and the x1900 series cards: including the sub-series like the AIW, or the 1650/1950's. Now people don't have to fudge the .inf files to make their lower-end cards to fold.

    GPU folding is here!

Really, the big problem with GPU folding is the Lag that sometimes occurs with 256 MB cards. If I was using the machines on a steady basis, I'd probably only run the GPU folding when I wasn't on the machine and run the CPU client, while I was using the machine.

First, you can probably turn off one of the two top 120mm fan's: I find one is just fine; Nex, may I suggest that next time you buy a video card try HIS: Their cards are very quiet compared to other brands that I've delt with. Unfortuantely, they do cost more ...

Good article: It explains alot about shale oil. One of the things that caught my eye was that it says the amount of shale-oil equivilents is aprox equal to 1/2 the known crude reserves: So much for hundres of years because if the known crude reserves is only 20 years worth, then we've only...

    GM 70MPG Plug-In Hybrid

Again, I will definately surrender that point, and yes it is a strong one. As a nation, we are following an energy path of destruction by being dependant upon oil. If one looks at the independant forecasts concerning crude oil supply and demand, $3.00 a gallon is gonna be outright cheap in a...

Don't worry about that: folding is really optional. I wouldn't be buying a new card anyway, untill the new RD600 come out late January. These should be directly competing with Nvidia's new 8800 series. From history, when a new series comes out, I rather expect a 100% increase in graphics...

According to an ATI product manager -- There is no risk of that. The GPU's are designed to deal with 90 degrees C and the fan's are designed for continious opperation (at least for the cards made by ATI). However, one does have to take it with at least a grain of salt: When will an ATI...

Suggestions on a simple computer backup plan?

Yes, 100Mb only results in aprox 10MB/s usable speed on a switched network. Since modern drives are commonly able to sustain 20-30MB/s, you can do the math and see why 100Mb Ethernet isn't acceptable. If you are gonna do NAS, 1000Mb Ethernet is much better than 100Mb Ethernet because even...
