    Folding@Home

This weekend, I'm doing some revamping and setting up the 64 bit SMP Linux client on two more machines, for a total of three. According to FAHMON, on each machine I'm getting 1,000PPD for a SMP Linux client as opposed to aprox 300PPD for two Windows clients or even 150+500 = 650PPD for a...

    IBM tower slow to initialize.

There are also a number of freeware/shareware utilities such as Bootvis from M$ that will analyze the booting process. Now I haven't used bootvis in a great while and M$ has withdrawn the program some years ago: I don't know why. So there may be issues with the program and I would test it on...

    First experience with Vista

All I can say, is that on the one machine I've installed Vista on it is slow as a slug. It is outright painfull to run it on a 3.2GHz P4 with 512MB of ram. The pauses whenever I delete or open a file drives me crazy.

    Resetting Windows trial period

I saw this on Daily Tech and though it was worth importalizing for future reference. If you have a beta, trial, or simply unactivated copy of Windows you can reset its time-out period for an additional 30 day time period (up to three times) by simply issuing the following command from a command...

Erasing your data before dumping your drive

Lets face it, if someone has the knowledge and capability of bypassing a secure wipe, then the odds are, they also have the knowledge and capability to get through encryption too. But really, a secure wipe is almost always good enough. In situations that they are not, why are you being foolish...

    More Vista nonsense

The standard ATI (6.5, 6.10, 6.11) drivers work on Vista, you just can't install the control panel. The problem with 7.1 is Stanfords fault: They admitted that they were given early drivers and didn't test them or report any problems with them by ATI's deadline ....

Well, I got my copy today: Vista Business with an FPP upgrade cost of $139 to ultimate. M$ UPS'ed it (Signiture required), rather than the ususal snail-mail shipment. I am installing it on a Dell 3.2GHz P4 with XP Home on it. My first observation: My it takes a long time to install

    GPU folding is here!

Welcome to GPU folding Coug. I assure you that I don't have any immediate plans to upgrade any further. While, I could add GPU's to all my machines, it makes no business sense and other than folding, I can't imagine a personal need. Matter of fact, as summer rolls around, I'll probably shut...

Making an XP Pro Corporate Install Legit

My immediate reaction is that an inplace reinstall should work just fine, using the new CD and key: I haven't tested it though. There are undoubtably hacks that swap the keys, but I wouldn't trust that that would be enough. Even if it works now, that would not guarentee that M$ won't change...

HD Keeps Spinning Down: How to ID?

The only time I've experianced it was on a machine with many drives. So many, that I had to use molex splitters. How ever, it wasn't just one drive, but a random drive that would power down and back up. This was a problem because it kept breaking my Raid-5 array. I found that the problem was...

Linux x64 SMP client - WoW

After giving it some time, I've found that the Linux system clock, inside VMware, runs much slower than the Windows clock, on my machine. It's messing with my frame times and PPD calculations. From my current calculations, the Linux clock is running aprox 1/4 the rate of true time and that...

I'm sorry, But I'd be taking a different tack than above; Not because it won't be a fine machine but rather, I don't think it needs to be that good. 512K RAM is all that will be needed, and a generic 17" LCD should be sufficient. Agreed, that 1GB is far better, but what is that extra 512k...
