Best Ingredient for Single Topping Pizza

Merc, have you ever made a yeast dough from scratch? I used to make my own pizzas from scratch once a week or two when I first moved into an apartment. I like grilled chicken and tyme as a topping, but any of the lighter pizzas are great, including basil and mozzarella, margarita, etc. I don't...

    Broadcom NetXtreme (5702) & VLANs

802.1q is synonymous with trunking. You may only be trunking 1 vlan or you may be trunking several. But the second you use 802.1q to tag frames, the link becomes a 'trunk'. 802.1q can be initiated or denied from either side of the link, so if your switch port is setup in access mode, 802.1q is...

    RAID Adapter Advice

I missed it the 1st time, but he's running PerformanceTest 6.1 (30 day free trial). I ran BST (bart stuff test) and it gave me similar numbers. I don't think either test uses OS caching, and both likely sync writes. Making their numbers quite a bit less than file copy operations.

    RAID Adapter Advice

Your write speeds seem kind of slow in general... If I remember correctly, individual drive's write speeds aren't too much slower than their read speeds. One thing I would suggest is to test the drives individually. If both are up to snuff, then put them in an array together and re-test.

    RAID Adapter Advice

I'm getting a fairly mediocre 16MB/sec writes on a 2x Hitachi 7k500 setup w/ 3ware 8006-2LP. SR says I should get at least twice that with individual drives. Read speeds on this thing are limited by the poor PCI implementation of the motherboard... don't think I can top 60 to 70MB/sec. I'm...

    Broadcom NetXtreme (5702) & VLANs

For a PC, you'd typically use an access port... e.g, your switch has several VLANs defined and each port that has a PC is assigned to exactly 1 VLAN. Your trunk ports would carry traffic for several (or all) VLANs between switches. You can trunk to a PC, but I've never tried it... takes the...

    More Vista nonsense

I imagine the software they're using to clone the machines needs updated. Someone probably updated the data without updating the partitioning section of the software (in cases where FAT partition type is used w/ an NTFS FS).

    More Vista nonsense

Can't you just use a fancy partition editor (gparted comes to mind) to change the partition type to match the file system type? As far as I'm aware the type is mostly informational... and points more to the OS used to create the partition than the file system... after all, Linux only gets one...

How much "online" storage do you have?

I've had my file server w/ RAID 5 array shutdown for almost 3 years now... quickly showing its age (4x 160GB 3ware 7500-4LP + 80GB OS drive). So I really shouldn't count it, even though I still have some data on it I wouldn't want to lose. For my current online systems I have: 1x 80GB, 1x 500GB...

    Christmas Lights

We occasionally suffer fire bans in certain territories that I hike/backpack in. However, I don't think the risks are nearly as great here. Even in fire ban, I've tempted fate a time or two and made a small fire when I was careful and didn't feel at risk of spreading anything.. I like your idea...

    Christmas Lights

While a white gas/gasoline powered stove seems ideal, some other possible solutions come to mind. Power inverter + electric kettle... or candle warmer/hot plate. One would have to be careful about the power draw from these units, so as not to exceed the capacity of the power inverter or car...

lots of that going around... less time for movies, though I did get in an episode of the new American Gladiator. Not bad, Hulk adds a certain element that was missing from the original.. though the new one can never quite live up to the nostalgia of the original.

    USB to SCSI

The 80 pin drive is meant for a hot swap bay with a backplane... And as far as something USB/firewire... most of that stuff is aimed at ease of use and...

    USB to SCSI

The adapter you referenced is for external SCSI devices... what you need is an internal adapter, and a cable/adapter for your 80 pin drive... Which 24 port "smart" gigabit switch?

We've used a few Dell managed gbit switches. Anything more than the basic models support Jumbo frames and VLANs as well as mirroring. Also, most backplanes are either jumpered or hard wired with an ID for each slot... On those that are hard wired, leaving the first slot blank will free up ID 0 in most cases. I've never heard of one that automatically detects the drives and then sets the ID's accordingly, starting at 0.

Also, does your motherboard BIOS simply state HDD-0, or does it specifically state SCSI. Lots of BIOSes equate HDD-0 with IDE primary master. If it doesn't state SCSI specifically or mention your drives by make/model, I'd assume it isn't referring to your add-in scsi card.

I'm not sure I understand the current problem... Typically you'd set your motherboard to boot SCSI or boot SCSI ID 0, your scsi controller would be set to boot ID 0, and your boot drive (or backplane position if you are using 80pin drives) would also be set to 0. This sounds like what you've...
