Suggest a decent 19" LCD monitor

Now that we're well under way of a hijacking.... That sucks. I don't use Vista, just played w/ the pre-release versions. So I don't have practical knowledge there. Rather than trying to put the support into the application layer, maybe it would be better to put it into the video subsystem...

Suggest a decent 19" LCD monitor

I'm hoping the tech/manufacturing from some of these ultra high res, ultra small notebook screens will start to bleed over to desktop monitors... There are WXGA laptop screens roughly half the area of my 19" LCD that have roughly the same number of pixels. I would think the necessary scaling...

Suggest a decent 19" LCD monitor

Rather than making an intentionally crippled monitor (low resolution), wouldn't a better solution be to make software that isn't dependent on resolution? This reminds me of the old days when apps, mainly games, were MHz dependent. PC manufacturers had to put turbo buttons on PCs for compatibility.

Oops I did it again...your BMI?

~5'8" ~148lbs BMI = 22.5 Although I personally believe I'm out of shape, most people would probably consider me trim/light and about average fitness level. ...though the average American fitness level may not be so high now that I think of it. Should we ban disposable batteries?

I'm impressed to see Duracell recently increasing advertising of their rechargeable NiMH batteries. With the exception of a spare battery for my Canon XTi, I haven't bought a disposable battery for years. I was utterly amazed by how easy it was to switch from Alkaline to NiMH. Beside the...

    Network Architecture thoughts

dd, if you are using the IPs in the example and you change the subnet mask on all devices to 255.255.0.0, then no routing should occur. Because all devices would then believe that they are in the same subnet as every other device and would try to communicate directly instead of going through a...

    dSLR thread

PTP works fine for me (400D), but it doesn't show up as a disk like a mass storage device... it shows up as another device type beneath the removable storage devices on the PC. Though I think there are some limitations of PTP mode (MTP with the newest firmware), it seems like only one...

dd, if you don't have a remote shutter release you can set the camera down (or tripod mount) and use the auto timer function (10 sec countdown I believe). I use a ~$10-$20 table top tripod I got in high school for my FG. I now use it with an XTi and the same lens you have. It's not a great...

Ah, I see it was actually 12k - 3k = 9k for buying through Dell small business. For reference, the enclosure is scsi (sas to be exact). It'll work with any external SAS controller. Dell's PERC5 controllers are PCIe, and should work (but may not be qualified with) any PCIe motherboard. It...

    Large RAID arrays

I'd highly suggest a direct attached storage product like the Dell PowerVault MD 1000 with a matching Dell PERC5/E PCIe controller. You can spec it out with up to 15 SATA or SAS drives (12 for raid 5 storate, 2 for raid 1 OS, 1 for global hot spare). Dell handles the compatibility, the...

Fastest SCSI System built by German magazine?

It's amazing the price difference between 12, 24, and 32 GB of RAM. With the current usage, we're lucky to utilize more than 8GB. Though the customer wanted to have the extra headroom for future applications and growth available to them so the cost of 24GB was justifiable for them. Having three...

    Backup Software for *nix

Since tape drives are typically seen as character devices, they are rather limited with respect to the tools available to access/monitor them. Dual or single channel SCSI RAID?

Dual vs single channel refers to the data interface between your RAID controller and hard drives. In a U160/320 SCSI setup, multiple drives can be chained off a single cable. Each cable represents one channel. Since the media is shared, only one device can talk at a time. By breaking up...

Tannin is old in his ways (you can tell because of the Moss on the exposed northern areas). The x15 is an older generation drive. What you'd be looking for is the 15k.3 or 15k.4 model from Seagate. Fujitsu or Maxtor drives would also be good and comparible in cost and speed.
